Brug in pot with no drainage hole

I bought a couple of large nice looking (at least I think so) artificial pots, that have the look of clay pots.

There is no drainage hole, so can I put something in the bottom like styrofoam peanuts or mulch or gravel and use a 2-3 gallon plastic pot inside and fill to the top with potting soil?

Any ideas? Thanks,

Why not just drill a few holes in the bottom of the original pot? :) I wouldn't trust a pot in a pot! It may end up holding water you can't see & 'rot' your brug. Just a thought!

I re-read your post. :) Are you wanting to use the larger pot to 'camouflage' the smaller 2 - 3 gallon pot inside? That would probably work for you! Just watch the water!! :)

For water garden, try Colocasia, creeping jenny (will grow in water easily-very nice hanging over sides of pot), aquatic canna, cardinal flower; water lettuce, water hyacinth, parrot's feather; water lilly, duckweed...some of them multiply very fast, some are very tall, so check ahead. There is many, many more. They could be in soil held by special pots for using in water, or you can go frugal & use stocking instead of pot (works very well). Some don't need any soil, they just float. If I was doing a water garden, I think I would use 'bubler', or even a 'fogger'...Depends how wild you want to go. You can have any plant in cachepot, since you are planting in another pot & using glazed ceramic for decor. I would make sure there is some space between planted pot & decorative pot for good air circulation, and that it is raised off the bottom so it will not sit in water that may/will drain out. Use a brick or some large rocks to raise it. Or a 'feet' made for raising planters off ground.

claudosu, If you can store your brug in a cool area with minimum light, it will discourage growth & blooming. I think most people try to chill the brugs until they drop their leaves or cut them off, before storing them. I'm not speaking from personal brug experience, but I feel that if you bring the brug into a warm house it's going to try to keep growing & blooming. I've read recommendations here that you avoid growing brugs in pots that have bottom drainage holes. The concept is that roots that come out of SIDE holes are easy to cut off when it's time to move the pot, but roots that grow down below the pot from bottom holes are hard to get at and you end up with a bigger struggle & it's harder on the plant. If I have to use a pot with a bottom drainage hole, I'll place a heavy plastic barrier in the bottom of the pot to discourage roots going that way. Patrick

Drilling holes in ceramic is much easier if you have the right drill bit, and a masonry bit is not a good choice for vitrified materials like ceramic. It does a passable job for soft materials like terra cotta, but works poorly for harder materials. You can buy spade/3-point/spear-point drills , at most hardwares and big box home improvement stores. If the material you're drilling is highly vitrified, like glass, you may need a core drill, . Copy pasted from something I left on another thread, about drilling holes: I have a considerable amount of experience drilling hard materials, which comes as a result of 34 yrs in the glazing contracting business (glass company). We regularly drill all sizes of holes in glass/mirrors, granite (shower door installations) and other vitrified materials (the objects people bring to us to drill holes in). Ease of drilling varies with the hardness of the material, of course, but terra-cotta containers are not hard at all. Most containers you'll encounter can best be drilled with a "spear-point" drill. I'll link you to a picture from one of our suppliers. The drill is also called a '3-point' or 'spade' drill. Highly vitreous containers (glass, or glass-like - ceramic - clay fired at extremely high temperatures) may even require a diamond impregnated "core drill", but it's uncommon to find containers like this. These drills (spade/spear-point) can be found at big box home improvement stores. They should be cooled with water or a 50/50 mix of water/antifreeze as you drill. An excellent strategy is to immerse the container you're drilling so it's upside down in a tub and add enough water to just cover the drilling surface as you drill. Rotating the drill clockwise while keeping it angled slightly off vertical while drilling, will greatly increase the ease of the whole operation. Alternately (I use this method), fill a squeeze container (contact lens solution bottle is stellar) with water or a 50/50 water/antifreeze solution & squirt it at the drill/material interface as you drill. Tmelrose, I'm glad all our 'helpful advice' didn't send you running for the hills! I, too, miss my grandparents and all the gardening knowledge they had in their heads. I would like to think I absorbed a lot of their knowledge when I was helping them in the garden, but it still would be nice to be able to ask them questions at times. In my neighborghood when I was a kid in the 60's, we had some of those 'little old lady' gardeners who always wore big floppy hats and gardening gloves. Being ladies, they always wore cotton housedresses outside, usually in floral prints. I always thought that they had beautiful yards, especially their flowers, and wish I had picked their brains to learn all their secrets too. They were so sweet and kind and so tolerant of all the questions kids ask, and I do remember that their pure love of gardening just oozed out of their pores. I would like to think there is a bit of them in each of us, even though we share our experiences and ideas now over the internet instead of over the backyard fence. Susan, I always have a lot of plans for things I never get around to doing too. Maybe all gardeners are that way. Having an unfinished 'to do' list or a 'list of plants to try' always keeps me occupied in the winter....when I think, of course, that "in the spring, I will get to that", although I usually don't. And, I have yet to meet a single gardener who thinks their landscape or garden is "finished" or "done". They always have a mental list of things to do and things to try. Even my rural neighbors who are lifelong farmers/ranchers/gardeners and are mostly in their 80s and 90s now always have something new they are going to try "this year or next". Dawn

When I do this, I take a heat gun and poke holes in the sides of the inner pot part way up -- as long as the pot is plastic. That way, if the water is too deep in the outer pot, the roots still get some air.

Absolutely drill holes...cause your pot will flood when it rains.

Mike, The Brugs are in 2 gallon plastic nursery pots right now. So this is 2 fold. Yes, to hide the nursery pot and to make it easier to bring them in, in the Fall.

DH thinks I might ruin the big pot if I try to drill it. And with drainage holes, I cannot have them on the deck because of staining. My deck is the sunniest spot in the yard and at that not exactly 100% full sun.

curious, what are you groing in this 2 gallon pot? I hope it isn't a Brugmansia, because if it is, it is entirely too small to get good results.

16 inches across good, 20 inches across better, 24 inches or more across - BEST.

Here was my first attempt for Brugmansia 'Charles Grimaldi'. I received approx 8" stick in June and this is what I had in October of the same year. I was very lucky to get a "Y" so soon.

I have been very happy with my blooms. This was in about a 6 or 8 inch square nursery pot. I hope to have a really good year this year with larger pots and maybe plant one of my Brugs directly in the ground.

I wouldn't advise keeping your plant in a pot with no drainage holes, even if it's in another pot. Isn't your deck treated? You shouldn't have a problem with staining from plants if the pots are plastic. If they are terra cotta or something similar you can just elevate them on something or better yet buy those little "pot feet". Barry is absolutely right about the size of the pot for a mature brug. 2 gallons is way too small. Good luck. Hope you get lots of blooms this season.
