OT: sorry another one. No brug news today. Hollyhocks

For days I meant to post this.

After years of not being able to grow them where ever I lived. Army moved us many places and everywhere I planted the usual stuff. Never really trying to hard to have something live longer then we were stationed there. Longest time...3 years lol

Anyways. Planted some seeds last year and watched them do almost nothing. This year however they have grown real tall and one is pink with inner white parts. The other one looks almost like a double darker pink. I am so in love!!

Got to get me MORE varieties :-))))

I am used to gardening in zone 4. Down here in zone 9 things just don't grow the same. This year my new plant is a croton - no idea what the name is, it's a HD special.

oh man are you ready for all that heat? You can leave a lot more plants in the ground all year round :-)

Pam, your garden looks beautiful. So sorry to hear about your dog. Gardening is such good therapy isn't it? That Taro does look like colocasia illustris. I have some I got at a swap too. It really does make a garden look tropical. The leaves burn in direct sun though. It doesn't kill the plant, but even a direct ray that gets through the trees in the afternoon will burn the leaves. Those striped Cannas are pretty, saw them on Monday at Lowe's and I'm thinking of going back. --Shirley

Napdog Linda, that sux the dog ate them, lol. I am thinking about trying to keep one or two as houseplants over the winter, the rest I will try to over winter in the basement. We'll see, they'kk probably rot..I'm not good at that. Lost all my cannas, dahlias, and hollyhocks that way last winter. Linda in FL, thanks! We're supposed to get more storms today..argh!! Theresa, YES!! those waterlilies are from you!! 3 on the bigger white, and so far only one pink on one of the smaller ones. The lotus just put up its first erect leaf. I wasn't expecting the stem to be prickly! The under water ones aren't. I tried smelling the nicotiana at night..still no fragrance, but now I am thinking that maybe I just can't smell it? My 4 yr old smelled the flowers earlier today and said "o mommy they smell so pretty". SO maybe it's just me? The SPV cuttings you sent me are thriving in the skippy at the pond! Sorry you lost your brug buds too. Sure does suck. Thanks Rigo, that one is the Variegated KMOTGG. I'm going to try and collect seeds from it whn it's ready, I want a whole patch of it next year! I can set some aside for you! The leaves are nice n big..and SO soft! Speaking of seeds..Theresa, I have your columbine seeds around here somewhere..wanted to mail them out last week, things got crazy and now I can't find the darn things!!! I will mail them out as soon as I find them.

Daniella, of course. I can send you some seeds when it makes some. I've noticed there are lots of seed pods forming, so hopefully a hard frost won't knock the vine out. I'm guessing they are as delicate as morning glories when it comes to frost. Theresa and Elizabeth, i can't take any credit for that! lol. I really neglect my yard a lot so whatever credit there is to give would go to the climate and the recent warm spell we've had. Theresa, If your mina lobata, doesn't make it (and if my mina makes seeds) you are welcome to have some. Mary, Eloise, Tj and Lucy: of the ten brugs from the same batch of seeds (three years ago), this is the one with the greenest midribs. The others have a fainter color. There was another that was yellowish and some are almost pure white. It is also the one with the largest blooms. I gave the rest away to family and friends this past thanksgiving (they were about 7 feet tall a piece). And to all, i can take a couple of cuttings from this brug to share with you all. It wouldn't be until after Christmas though. Just let me know if you would want that. Josh

Rita, No, I don't either, but I was channel surfing that night, and BINGO! They had plants. So, I, of course, stopped to see what they had. My daughter had given me a gift certificate to QVC, so I needed to spend it...It was 7 or 8 months old. No expiration date, but still. You don't have to watch, they have a web site and, this "Roberta's Garden is supposed to be a rgular department. I haven't looked, but the info with the plants said that was the case. kay

Lucy, they are pretty and look so healthy! I grew black hollyhocks years ago. They did fine until the heat of the summer made them look pretty ratty. I hope yours will hold up well and bring you much joy!

Oh Joyce you know what, they already did that! Just seeing that first flower! Watching how they climb up the stalk and open. WOW. And you even had black ones. They must look awesome.

Those are so pretty. My hollyhocks are nowhere near blooming size yet. I love them but the foliage on mine always gets funky towards the middle of the summer. The blooms are fine but critters and/or some disease gets to the leaves.

Karyn so far I have been very lucky with the foilage being ok, without that rust thing they get. I was affraid that they get to much shade but it looks like they love that place. I just ordered black seeds on DG :-)

Barb did you read that your Amaryllis is getting another stalk?

Lucy, those are very pretty. I have never grown hollyhocks, but have had seeds for them and then I forget to plant them. I am growing two sunflowers this time, which I've never planted before! One took off right away and is about 4' tall now and the other is lagging behind at about a foot tall.

Eloise got those sunflowers growing too. If I want to or not. The birdfood shares lots of seeds with the surrounding area lol

But then I grow them just because my firstborn LOVES sunflowers and I use pictures to brighten her day here and there.

oh well....I better get that lawnmower ready. CU all later

Another hollyhock. That one is about half the size from the other ones and grows more in a bush form. But take a look beyond the fence. There is still a lot of our property. so in the fall I threw all the marigold, Datura la fleur and zinnia's over the fence. today I went looking. A lot of Dats but even more Marigolds. Can you see them? So far the deer have not eaten any of them
