Most cold-hardy Brug??

Hi all,

Even though I live in zone 8, on the Oregon coast, we can have a cold snap in the winter for a week or so. I had a Brug in a pot, on my covered porch, last winter & it didn't make it.

I would like to try again but this time I would like to know what the most cold hardy Brug out there is?

I think most here would tell you, for your zone, that you'd have better success with a wider range of brugs if you tried overwintering in the ground instead of a pot.

I'm sure you'll hear of some others that have a better chance at surviving a prolonged winter freeze but I'd vote for Charles Grimaldi as the cold hardiest, but it's roots can grow as thick as it's branches and would threaten the pot that they are in. And it does have serrated leaves, like a bread knife's edge. As it is an offspring of Dr.Seuss and Frosty Pink, you might be able to find someone with a CGrimaldi without the serrated leaves. Anyway, that is a difficult find to acquire and your pot would still have to be tough enough...lol

Frosty Pink is also known as cold hardy but like most brugs probably wouldn't tolerate a potted condition in a freeze but maybe in your zone with some added protection...maybe.

I'm currently under the impression that if the brug is a big size the greater chance it's bigger roots will survive a freeze and that's probably the one factor to consider what 'cold hardy' means and not any subspecies in general...until we find out different. I am NOT saying that any brug can survive a freeze in a potted condition, this is not for me to say, never saw it or heard of it.

For others who have had a brug survive a freeze or two, probably in the ground in their zone, I doubt they considered how long the freeze lasted. There's a difference between 1/2 hour and a few hours!

You have a good question, but there's going to be varied experiences even if it were possible with certain brugs, maybe someone lost there's because they didn't give it a little drink of water during a prolonged dry spell which could happen and they wouldn't necessarily know that's why they lost it.

I lose plants in spring due to this. So now I know, never 2 weeks without snow, rain or water in the spring.

Anyway, maybe you'll have someone come in that has had success with particular brugs, we do have some gamblers who try it on some brugs but they tend to have so many brugs it kinda helps to be brave enough to do such an experiment...lol. One thing is for sure, you won't get a guarantee of survival from anybody just perhaps a good chance.

So what brug did you have that you lost this way?

I've gotten cannas to survive over the winter. I used to live in the Chicagoland area and by accident one year I left some cannas in the ground. They were rather close to the foundation of the house with a sheltered southern exposure. As I didnt realize there were rhizomes in the ground still, I didn't mulch them. Then to my suprise they popped up and bloomed the following summer! There has also been oxalis, callas, and gladiolas overwinter in that area(I've also had glads overwinter unprotectded in other areas of the garden as well). There was also a school that was a few blocks away from my place when I lived in the North side of Chicago that had cannas pop every year, unprotected on the south and east sides of the building. Ironically I couldnt get mine to overwinter a few blocks away! The cannas were identical to the ones that I grew in the south suburbs, a medium variety with small scarlet/orange-red flowers, with more flowers on the inflorescense that most cannas. I really dont know the name of the variety,but it is very common in the area. I believe it may be a very hardy variety.

"edible has hardy chicago, which a gather is a variant of celeste" No, these are 2 completely different figs, if you ever see the fruit, you'll agree. "ty-ty has the tenessee mountain fig, which i gather is another celeste variant." I would stay as far away from Ty-Ty as you can -- very, very bad reputation. I'm in a similar zone as you, and have tried several varieties. Yes, there is some variation in cold hardiness, but in general I always expect that a new fig will freeze down to the ground the first 2 - 3 years before becoming established enough to withstand the winter frosts. You can try to get around this by either some system of protection or by keeping it in a pot for a couple years and overwintering in a shed. Generally I just let it freeze and come up from the ground. Though I do try to give the base a bit of protection so to be sure that there are viable buds for it to spring back from. Also, figs in drier soil will be hardier than in damp soil.

Trachycarpus fortunei is sometimes called a Chusan palm, so Im guessing that when you say Dwarf Chusan palm, you mean Trachycarpus wagnerianus (most people just call them "Waggies" for short). Trachycarpus Fortunei definitely is a bit more cold tolerant than Trachycarpus Wagnerianus and some say that Trachycarpus Fortunei "Nanital" and Trachycarpus Takil are more cold hardy than Fortunei, but if there is a difference in cold tolerance, it's very minimal. Your best bet is to just get a T. Fortunei (more commonly called windmill palms). Mine survived 7F unprotected with some damage, so they are not as hardy as some websites claim, but they can definitely handle temperatures in the 10F range and mature specimens have survived temperatures in the single digits for short durations. The one thing you learn with growing cold hardy palms in colder zones is that you can grow ANYTHING you want with protection within reason! My most tender palm is my Livistona. It wouldnt stand a chance without protection since it is considered a zone 9 palm, but it's in a great microclimate and gets protection so it survives the winter (with some damage, but very quickly recovers and looks nice again by summer). Pindo palms, med fan palms, sabal minors, needle palms, windmill palms are all commonly grown (among people pushing the gardening limits) with protection. Once you conquer those you can start getting some more risky palms. Right now my most risky palm is my Silver Saw Palmetto which is definitely a zone 9 palm. Once you figure out the protection methods that work best for you, you wont have too many problems getting palms to thrive in zone 5b! In my experience my cold hardy palms have been MUCH easier to care for than the tender palms that I bring in every winter. Protecting palms is a lot easier than hauling them in every winter! I stick many of mine into the ground, in their pots. They are then unearthed without trauma and get stored in my garage. Some of the Dioons are very cold hardy. Cycas taitungensis is another good one. Just keep in mind that a hard freeze will defoliate most of them, leaving them weakened. An annual defoliation is probably not good for the long-term well being of cycads. Cycas revoluta is leaf hardy to at least the low 20's in a pot. x
