Since your other container plants (the osteospermum and sweet potato vine) are annuals and not winter hardy, I'm not sure why you feel you need an evergreen grass to accompany them :-) Why not pick whatever you like to go with that combo - an annual like purple fountain grass or even one of the common "spike" plants like cordylines/draceanas would work well and last as long as the other plants. IMO, unless you don't mind replanting the container seasonally, combining hardy perennials with annuals just makes for more work and root disturbance to the perennials when you remove/replace the dead annuals. And you'd be surprised how fast the roots of a perennial ornamental grass will fill up a container!

Peopl have already given some good suggestions. For longer term freezes, the best cycads are the ones with subterranean stems will survive lower temperatures because the ground temps will always be warmer than the air temps. As an example, I have seen the Zamia floridanas at Steinhatchee where the apecies were 12 inches below the surface, which means it would have to get about 15F a foot below the ground to kill them. A really good plant that hasn't been mentioned yet is Ceratozamia hildae. The ones I sold to Zilkor BG in Austin took 12F without any leaf damage, which means they could easily survive single digits if the plants were planted deep enough. Also, for what it is worth, ANY pumila type zamia would be like Z. floridana, so if that would make it, you have another 10 species to choose from. Oh yea, for the comment on trying to find sizable Cycas panzhihuanensis, the first commercial seeds were brought in from China in 1995, so there are people out there who have them available for sale with up to 1 foot of trunk, so availability is not a problem, what WOULD be the problem is what you are willing to pay for one, because they are truly easy to find with a little looking around.

If "in a few years" you mean 10, then yes, LOL. It takes time to get seedling cycads out of the juvenile stage. When the caudex starts to thicken, leaves get bigger and increase in number. In the beginning growth is slow. That's why bigger plants are pricey. Have fun with your plant! I'm assuming it is new, right? Mail order? Don't be alarmed if there is no new growth until next year or even the year after. Transplant shock takes time to recover from. Be careful not to overwater since the formation of new roots is also slow. When you potted it up, did the roots hit the bottom of the pot? These guys have deep tap roots and may suffer if not allowed to grow that way. x
