Aristolochia fimbriata germination

I have some fresh seed from my little fimbriata. Who has had sucess getting them to sprout and how?

Also my little tiny tomentosa I posted about being nibbled on is still doing OK despite the occasional chomp and now it has a tiny little flower bud. It's the cutest little thing.

No eggs anywhere yet but I don't have enough to feed them yet anyway.

I've had more luck in plantng seeds as soon as possible...fresh seed is best.

There is a post about free seeds from 2009 and there are some good tips from those that had success getting the seeds to germinate and grow. Do a search for "pipevine seeds". I think the post was in July 2009. Good luck-I can't get these seeds to grow for me. I have had new plants come up from the wind blowing the seed. And not where I planted it, it grew where it wanted to.

I've been waiting to post to see if my orange esperanza survived. Still no signs of any green showing. I would be happy to trade for your Liatris mucronata seeds. Hi Ruth, I'm definitely in need of fimbriata, the cats prefer this to the calico (which they somehow rip off the vine as a whole leaf and then run out). Where can I find your want list to see if I have what you're looking for? Thanks so much!

Mechelle, You have such a generous spirit. You shared these seed with me about three years ago and I now have a nice planting of these little vines. Last fall I left them in the bed to see if they would over winter here and they did! I'd also started seed so if the vines left in ground froze, I'd have some for planting out this spring. As it turned out, I didn't need replacements. This summer I watched to see if they would add to their numbers and I saw many baby plants that had germinated from this season's dropped seed. I wasn't certain if they would self seed but they did. Just posting this info for anyone wondering how these plants might do in a growing zone north of you. My zone is now considered 8a-7b and I grow them in an area where they only get early morning sun. Mary A. fimbriata vines

They can be very slow to germinate. I wouldn't expect to see them any sooner then 3 week and it will probably take longer. I've had seeds pop up a year after planting. I have so many aristolochias and passies that have popped up in other plants that are potted in recycled soil. Elegans and grandiflora do well in a baggie. I think it was Linda in SC (ibartoo) who gave me that idea. I put moist soil in a baggie along with some seeds, seal it up and wait. I've had very good results with a number of heat loving plants. The fimbriata can take cool temps but I don't allow it to freeze. I do let the aristolochias go dormant over the winter once they've formed a tuber. Usually the second season of growth. I just love saying Hairy Balls. lol It's much catchier then Gomphocarpus physocarpus. It's a type of milkweed. MW vine is milkweed vine. There's quite a few different MW vines but most are impossible to find. I have nipple fruit too but no Peter's Peppers. lol Hairy Balls is really a very pretty and the blooms look exactly like a hoya. They are both asclepias. The foliage isn't the least bit similar.
