How do I get started?

Ok, after looking around here, I decided it would be fun for me and the kids to try our hand at collect eggs/cats. What do I need? I have a small (5gal or so) plastic critter cage, but I'm getting the impression that that would be too small. I also have (just need to go get it from my parents house) a 29gal aquarium I used to keep a very large bearded dragon in. What else would I need?

We have mostly up here Black Swallow Tails. Haven't seen a monarch in a long time. So what kind of plants do I need for the cats? I assume they need to be potted, right? To put them in the cage.

How do I know if I find a plant w/ butterfly eggs on it? Do I just take the part of the plant w/ the eggs on it, or dig up the whole plant? What about water needs? And what are my chances of success?

Sorry for all the questions, thanks in advance!

Karri

PS, I'm heading off to the FAQ again too.
