Trees that require little watering in first year

I'd like to plant some trees at my daughter's school to give shade on the playground. Right now there is just a Brazilian pepper tree. The principal has given permission. Right now would be a good time to plant, I think, because of the wet soil. But I don't want to have to run an irrigation system out to the trees, and I know that the first year you have to continue watering all trees until they're established. I could probably transport some water out there once in a while, but are there any trees that would do ok with minimal added water from the get go (assuming that they're planted now and get a good few months of damp). How about Schinus molle? Other shade trees that don't get over 30ish feet? California natives are preferred. Thanks,

Janine
