HAVE: Prickly Pear Cactus
Comments (4)Thank you for the warm welcome! Well, there are a couple types of plants that I have many of...daylillies, irises, and hostas (they're green with white in the middle of the leaves). As my name suggest, I am starting new gardens around my new home. Also, I recently planted a Wisteria tree that has some small shoots. From what I've read, it sounds like they would grow new roots if propigated. Is there anything in specific you are looking for? I have developed a small network of friends for trading live plants and bulbs...if there is something in specific, I could ask around...or it might just jog my memory of something else I have and didn't think of thinning. Thanks for the help....See Morehave: have: curly leaf epiphyllum and rick rack cactus cuttings
Comments (8)Hmmmmm....would you consider swapping a cutting apiece of the curly epi and Prime Time for 2-4 fresh cuttings of 'Firestick' Pencil Cactus? The original plant (not mine) had reddish coloration to the branches, tho' the cuttings I took (4-6" long) do not as they were shaded....See Morecactus flowers in the shade (more details)
Comments (2)I think it will depend of what your are growing and the species. Example, Bob Schick's hybrids some like to open with some shade and last up to four days, others sun and only last 1-2 days opening in the night and closeing in the afternoon. With shade they would last longer and be brighter. Some cacti plants will not even set flowers without the proper temperatures and light. Most won't even set flowers if they don't have a cold temperature and given a chance to become dorment. Norma...See MorePencil Cactus, Milk Cactus, anyone have one in the ground?
Comments (21)Mine has been in the ground a few years. They were selling little starter plants called firesticks that had red to yellow top growth at Walmart. These are just a color variant of pencil cactus. Mine would be as tall as the house, but I prune it way back on occasion. The main trunk is very woody at this point, but the limbs are fragile. I think a lot of times we are told that plants should not go in the ground. Many plants like dry roots, and will not tolerate too much moisture in the soil. I do believe that most florida soil (read sand)drains better than any potting mix. Because of this I do not fear putting plants that many parts of the country can't grow in the ground. Even my desert roses do very well in the ground. Just don't plant in a low lying area that is prone to flooding. The pencil cactus should be a plant it and forget it plant, very easy to care for. It is a euphorbia, so more likely the latex is toxic, not an allergan, but I would not worry about it, just don't get it in your eyes or mouth. Bill...See MoreLaura Robichaud
