Shot - In the -Dark

Hi all,

After the sun set on a cloudy evening,I tried some 'dark'

photos to see what happened.

These are two kinds of Ananus,and a Bromelia balansae,the only remaing plants left outdoors.

We continue to get a very warm flow of air from the South,keeping us in the 80's this week.

Certainly rare for our area.

That variegated Ananus has a nice evening glow Bob. Where do they get to spend the winter...?

Hi Devo,
Usually,they spend winter in one of my rooms by a window that gets some afternoon sun. This year,I'm thinking they may end up at our Botanical Gdn.,as they grew quite large this summer. The nice colors fade when indoors,so the BG may be a better place to sit out the winter months.
Oddly,if you notice,the other variegated Ananus did not color up at all,and shared the same location all summer.I suppose its a different variety that does not react to the sunshine as the other did.

i am on the fence as to whether it is good to have the H1N1 shot or not. BTW my background is a BS in biology w/ a specialization in both plant sciences and medical microbiology (taught at IU med school). i have a special interest in unusual viruses. i do not even read information about medical things until i look at credentials and personal opinions mean nothing to my scientifically trained mind. i am interested only in verifiable info thru proven scientific routes (CDC, AMSRID, WHO, some universities w/ elite medical schools only etc..) there is soooooo much incorrect non-scientific info out there it's sad what people think and know on issues like this. it truly doesn't matter for most people since they are only making a limited # of doses (enough for 10% of the population i believe) and the ranking for getting it starts w/ pregnant women, then children, adults under 40 then anyone over 40 w/ pre-existing lung/heart conditions making them susceptible to it. that is the order of risk for death also. it will also be interesting to see how much this shot costs, i'm gonna guess more than most would pay out of pocket, i understand it will not be covered by most insurances. would i get it given i have asthma and am 40? i will wait and see...DH & i have had several flu's this yr (more than any previous yr infact) and believe we may have already had it, so i'm willing to wait it out. i have had flu shots in the past after getting a B version of Hong Kong flu and getting extremely sick in my 20's but i don't get it every yr. this is too new of a vacccine for me, now next yr after i see how things go this fall/winter i might. ~ liz

The structure is most definitely compromised. A slight mist of rain is ok and somewhat helpful in keeping the material moist and can aid in curing. A rain storm though, will change the ratio of cement to water and not provide a sound structure. If you have what you described, this pool should be removed and be started over again. I can see from the photos it's not good. Find a structural engineer in your area and pay for a consultation and a site visit. An engineer experienced with pool construction is highly recommended.

Thank you all for looking and commenting. Gypsy is a really good one. The blooms are large and seem prettier as the day goes. I am tickled with Blackberry Dragon. Kate's photos are what made me want it in the first place. yes, Mantis, Joe Burrow is doing very well for a first year, It is not nearly up to height, but I wouldn't expect that in a first year. especially with the challenges of this year, but some plants seem not to be affected at all. Kate, I have to thank Debra for Reap the Whirlwind. Pink Tarantula is blooming but very few scapes and shorter than usual. kay

Very impressive Annie. I know the amount of work involved in cutting firewood. The last time we had several cords DH and both boys worked all weekend with a hydraulic splitter. They'd split and toss the wood aside and DDIL and I would stack it. Then when Covid shut things down DS stayed at our place in PA for a few months and decided to build a wood shed. I really enjoy our wood burning stoves and the aroma of a fire - and it wont be long before we';; be sitting by the fire. Maire

Beautiful pics Bob, I will have to try that.

My varigated Ananus has gotten huge this summer also. I wondered how the north to south move would affect this plant. Guess all the rain we had made for great growing conditions. Last measurement was 28" wide!

All your plants inside already? I know I took a chance with a couple of 40 degree nights, but the payoff has been a nice, extended summer vacation! It looks like I'll have to start bringing plants on Tuesday. After that I'll make sure I take time to post a few photos.

Hi Paul,
Yep,everything was brought in a week before the Extravaganza show,as we had two nights that had frost form,and I had to cover all the plants.
I was concerned that it might occur when I was in Florida,so I played it safe. When it got really warm again this week,I put the 3 plants in the photo out for more sun. Its just too unpredictable here,can be 70 in the daytime,and in the 30's at night. A year ago we had that heavy snow storm that ruined half the trees in our area.
Ya just never know.
