Billbergia pyramidalis v. concolor X seedlings

Hi All, some seedling coming into flower for first time.

Billbergia pyramidalis v. concolor x B. Windigig Special.

Both parent plants are green though 90% of the seedlings are burgundy in color?

The second image shows the largest seedling in a more advanced stage of flower, hence it looks much more like its' pod parent;

Am under the impression that the color comes from the smaller parent as it when starved shows a pink coloration in foliage as well as some silver banding?

what do you think are they some thing you would add to your garden or not?

Hi Allan,

They sure would add to the garden. The inflorescence on that one at the bottom in particular really is a beauty. Nice work!

I think they look great..tho I may not register any of them that wouldnt stop me from planting them in a flower bed instead of the compost bin.

HI Everyone, thanks for the kind words about my babies. Yes the last one is a ripper!!!! Bil. euphemia Georgia x pyramidalis, the striped pattern is on the back and front of the leaves- just hope it stays there. I really love the classic vase shape of pyramidalis so i will be using it in the future. Lisa thank you for the tip on using some fertilizer. The plants i have potted into the larger pots are jumping away from the smaller ones, i use a very good quality Cymbidium Orchid potting mix for all my Broms and the Bills really love it. But i have noticed how well they respond to a fresh mix, so to keep the smaller ones moving i will give them a low nitrogen feed. As at the moment i dont have the room to pot them all into bigger pots. One side of my brom house is devoted to Billbergia seedlings and the other side is full of Vriesea seedlings- its getting rather crowded in there. Thanks again. Tamera

Hi All, yep they are pretty & the second one is only just in full flower now. Current image of this billbergia in flower; Have hopefully set seed on the second one with the first seedling (Sibling)? They are a line of Billbergia that all look similar & reasonably hardy. Do not know if I will sell pups am lazy that way. Some other hybrids flowering at present; Canistropsis seidelii x C. billbergoides yellow (half way between both parents) self fertile. flower is approx. 3 inch of golden bracts in each head. Canistropsis seidelii x C. plumb, again half way between both parents. Foliage is very purple in color. Aechmea recurvata v benrathii seedlings showing flower color differences; Vriesea carinata (orange form) x Vriesea sucrei , very uniform batch of seedlings. am hoping to create an F2 cross of this with a sibling soon??? more Aechmeas flowering and some interesting colors and flower forms appearing. will show them next time I get the urge???? Yep Jack am busy playing tennis these days, broms are getting too much work????

Edwin, that is Doc Farwell's Grafting Seal. I'm trying it this year because I saw Dax using it. ;) So far it seems to be working well. I think it might help keep the tissue at the union hydrated until it knits. I put the grafting band on first, and then apply the sealant. In my basement the humidity can get very low, especially during winter. This is probably due to my semi-arid climate, combined with a forced air furnace. I have noticed an increase in % takes using the sealant. There is also a bonsai video where the guy uses tree sealant on juniper grafts, which seems to support this technique. The link is below. Hi Allan,

A very interesting lot of offspring you have there and I could certainly find a place for them in my garden. I love the banding on the three on the left and bottom of the pic., very eyecatching.

What percentage of light are they growing under?

They look like they would look good in a garden high up on a slope or tied to a tree so you could view the flower and banding.

I would grow that in my garden.

To me maybe grown in full sun may give a better shape?? color is ok.

Allan - They sure are a surprise result considering the parents. So, where does the banded purple come from? No Muriel Watermans flowering nearby?

The last one, with a great dense inflo similar to pyramidalis, is unique to my eyes and experience. The inflo of pyramidalis is much admired, and to get those results with foliage colour, and full form to boot, surely makes it a desirable Bill worth naming and registering. Congratulations!

I too am questioning the other parent, Allan. B. vittata 'Colores' is what came to mind looking at the bottom one. Muriel W would work too, but I'm not seeing Windigig there.

I'm also wondering why you wouldn't want to register that last one. I would, and I'd buy one too!

Hi all, again thanks for the compliments though produced these seedlings with the idea that the F2 generation would be the interesting one???

Was surprised when out of several hundred seedlings only a handful were green foliage the rest were burgundy foliage?

I did not make a mistake with the parents, this was a deliberate cross.
My intention was to produce a plant like Billbergia pyramidalis v concolor which flowered all year round like Billbergia Windigig Special?

Have now selected bronze foliage seedlings out of B. Windigig special (with silver banding) just by back crossing to B.WS (this cross does not have B.pvc or red hybrids in it).

Kerry @ Lisa, this cross does not have any B. Muriel Waterman in it nor B. vittata (am 100% sure of this).

If any one does not believe me? do the cross your self? am sure you will be surprised?

Hi everyone,

A little bird sent me these pic's and info of one of Allan's seedlings mentioned above.

(As told by the little bird).............This is the best out of the batch that I got, there was not a lot of good even variegation on the mother, a bit skimpy on it, but the variegation was evident & this is the first pup, I think this is awesome variegation for a Billbergia, need to flower a couple, try the pups in diff. locations & see what happens in a year or so. It does have a nice little bit of barring on the under side of the leaves also, measures 700 wide x 350 high, leaves about 50 mm wide. I have had it under 50% mesh I think it might need more light, it has been getting some fert. This one I am going to deservedly name Billbergia Allan Ladd.

That's it folk, I just thought I'd pass this bit of info on to you.
