OT: What has happened to our Honey Bees?

Here is a fascinating video about the disappearance of our honey bee. Personally years ago they were the ones I was protecting my pollinated blooms against contamination from...i just don't see them anymore...i protect my blooms against the night time moths now.....It's obvious that something is terribly wrong..

Is there another place to watch this? It is slow running with a lot of reloads. maybe it's just my computer programs
it has taken me 20 minutes to watch 14 minutes of it. 13 seconds of download to 5-8 seconds of viewing.

If there is a problem with slow load just get it started, the hit the pause button and walk away, Come back to it 10 minutes later and you should have buffered a sufficient amount of the film to watch it without a hitch...This is the only place I could find it online....i think it streams from a slow distributor like china. They tend to stream slowly

I could agree and believe the OP as soon as I read it. A search for honey bee damage brought me to this forum. Two years ago my neighbor decided to become a bee keeper, and appears to be as commercial as he can get away with. I had harvested my fig tree for 8 yearsm but last year, the figs were totally destroyed by his bees. Before they were at the stage that I would pick them, they would have bees feeding off of them. The state of Florida has recently turned bee keepers into royalty by overriding any local concordances, and letting them pretty much do as they please. I tried many things last year, as I did not want to kill them. Next I will complain to the department of agriculture who supposedly regulates them, but I have had enough, and this year the pesticide will come out. If anyone knows of any groups that one could join to complain in Florida, or who wants to start one, please post up.

How close are the hives? Perhaps he has too many hives, I can see 1 or 2 hives max. in town. Do you know the bylaw...can he have hives? If yes, there is not much you can do except talking to your neighbour, perhaps a barrier, wall, he can put up to restrict the flow, direction to and from hives. Keep your dog water inside, in a shed or shaded place. Konrad

Snooker- that website is AWESOME! I need some quiet time to be able to read through it all. I would like to buy 2 nucs and be able to set up 2 hives this spring. I had hundreds (maybe thousands) of visiting bees - like one every 6 inches, in all of my brug flowers. They loved the pollen. They were so busy working, they were constantly bumping into me and never threatened me once. So they belong to someone's hive, I wonder how that will affect them. I am more focused on hive health and haven't really thought of the honey- I was told not to even think of harvesting in the first year. I want what's best for the bees! Have you heard of sifting powdered sugar on the bees and in between the frames to combat varroa mites? It's supposed to encourage bees to clean themselves more thourghly and remove the mites. I've been watching this older gentleman on you tube- OJ Blount - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5ePhvzeGwA he uses natural ways to promote his beekeeping. Check it out! Thank you Eloise- it's been a dream of mine for years! Bill- I was wondering how the bee stings are- I'm allergic to yellow jackets but not sure about honey bees. Guess I'll have to go buy that epi pen now. ($150 for 2!) I would love to work amongst the bees with just a veil, it get's hot here in NC! I'm in a tank top and shorts all the summer. I can't see me in total cover up for this! I have also decided to go with the medium frames because of the weight of them when they are full of honey. I don't want to depend on my husband to lift them every time I have to look into the hives. Well guys, thank you so much for all of your great info and suggestions. (wish you all lived nearby!) I'd like to keep in touch and see how things are going for you in the spring if that's ok!

Last year I planted borage, sunflowers, and cosmos and there were more bees than I've seen in awhile in my yard. Next year I am planning on installing a hive and some Italian bees on our property. This year I am doing my research and going to try and hookup with a local beekeeper in my area and help them with thier hives so I can learn. They are pretty neat.

I got two hives last spring to hopfully pollinate the fruit trees that I planted, but they came too late for last year. I didn't take any honey from them so they would be sure to have enough to make it thru the winter. We had a sunny day yesterday and they were buzzing around the entrance to the hive. I think they will be good from here on out. I am hoping to get some honey this year. They are pretty neat, but don't go near them when it is going to rain because it's rough. They got me about eight times one cloudy day. A lesson well learned. I guess I should have worn a bee suit that day. They were so calm that I got complacent. It didn't really hurt but it itched for a week. I live in the city and they don't bother anybody. GET BEES.

It's amazing how dependent we are on these little critters...they are a major part of our food chain...it scares me to think that they are in danger

I just got done watching the whole video. That was the most extensive show I've seen on CCD. It is heartbreaking to see what's happening to the bees. This just further reinforces that we need to go organic or at least more organic and to be self sustainable as possible. I am not totally organic but it is something that I am working on.

rmbill it is great to hear that you have bees. I don't expect to get honey my first year either, after reading on some bee forums about them being able to survive the first winter. I am hoping to start some bees next spring and trying to decide what kind of hive to buy or perhaps build. I really want to have an orchard and grow things that the bees will like and then eventually get honey. I have been using a tsp full of local honey that I bought at our local farmer's market, in my tea each morning for my pollen allergies and it has done wonders.
