New Vr.seedling

I just thought i would show this ,it has Vr,fenestralis in its parentage ,I propose to name it after my young lady friend Miss Sylvie Rosenberg ,

ohh-ahh Jack. thats a lovely seedling. Its promising to be a really nice plant. Was it an individual in a batch, or did you get a couple of the same? I love all the foliage Vrieseas you have bred! It seems as though you always have something new!
I will definitely have to come and see your plants, as I'm sure they would be even more spectacular up close.
Now, don't let it go to your head. he he.

Hi B.A this is the pinkist out of the batch but there are several that are very nice ,i did'nt grow many of the cross as there was few seeds ,but will do it again ,no it does not go to my head ,just like to show people what can be done with various plants,I actually do'nt like all the attention it has gotten me but I can't have it both ways .

These are really nice Vrieseas, Pedro. There has been much confusion here in Oz about a couple of Vr. pastuchoffiana look-alikes, which I'm keen to sort out with some help, if possible. Like a few others, I bought a Vriesea labeled as pastuchoffiana from Pinegrove Nursery (N.S.W.) several years ago when the nursery was owned by the Buchanans. When it flowered, I realised it was incorrectly labeled and was really the smaller hybrid Vr. Intermedia (rust bracts). I have grown and flowered a few of these, including a pink-lilac bracted form. It is quite similar to Pedro's pastuchoffiana, but its leaves are more "cascading" (less upright) and the glyphs are not as strong in contrast. The inflorescence of 'Intermedia' differs greatly. Having sorted that out, I then acquired another form of a labeled Vr. 'Intermedia', which looks just like Pedro's pastuchoffiana. I have seen this same Vriesea offered elsewhere for sale as 'Intermedia', sometimes with the added description of "tall upright form". I have labeled my tall upright one Vriesea 'Intermedia NOT (??)' - but might it be the real pastuchoffiana? I have been growing the one in below photos for about 6-7 years. It is approx. one metre (three feet) high and wide, grown in a shady area of my garden, yet to flower. Obviously the inflo will help reveal all, but I live in hope. Vr. 'Intermedia Not'... OR Vr. pastuchoffiana? I love those Vr. bituminosa(?) seedlings. I bought one from Bruce at Greenstock, and assume his are from the same wild seed as Pedro's (?). Here is a photo of a dear little one at Greenstock last June, which resembles a pleated cabbage. This photo is of one of those seedlings of Vr. bituminosa from Greenstock, now getting quite big. Unfortunately, those corrugated leaves tend to smooth out as it grows, and the dark tips are less prominent. The reddish underleaf also seems to have disappeared. It has been growing in bright dappled light. I have been growing another Vr. bituminosa for a few years, bought as a pup rather than a seedling. It looks identical to the seedling, to my untrained and naked eye. It is yet to flower. See below. Cheers, Kerry

Well thank you everyone for your kind comments ,i agree Lisa i like the soft peachy tones ,those plants are bred from Vr,fenestralis ,all the others have Vr'Milky Way' in them , and Andrew the parentage of Vr'Michelle Cameron' is my Vr'Uluru Sunset' x 'Milky Way' i grew 12 seedlings out the cross and the others are burnt orange tones ,Nev ,there is now not a lot of culling to be done (and that is a problem as you want to keep all ) as the quality of the parents improves ,so do the offspring ,Michelle is a beautifull lady and her husband Mal is a great bloke ,they grow perfect plants and are nice friends , No Nev , i dont farm them out ,though no one would mind i guess ,Hi Yong ,thank you my friend ,Sorry but my vinicolor x your Wer, did not work ,still there is allways next time ,at this stage Yong i do not send out of Australia ,otherwise you would have some ,i have included a piccie of the other plants from the cross of Michelle to show the difference They are nice high coloured plants , 'Uluru Sunset' is very strong ,but 'Milky Way' came through on 'Michelle Cameron ' its now very apparent that you will allways get quality from 'Milky Way' cheers ,Jack

Thank you all for the information. Jack, I too grow in coco peat, mixed with 50% perlite, and I surely have the algae problem, will try your hint, the algaecide should be available in aquarium stores, right? Nev, the black surface is the dead algae, when it grows I keep the mix drier and it dies, but the substrate will deteriorate this way. Rick, the evening misting, I can say what aplies to orchid growing. Everybody says do not mist in the evening, the plants will stay wet during the night and this favors the fungus penetration to the plant. If you mist in the morning, the plants will dry quicker. During the hot and dry summers here I mist in the evening, the plants will dry out the same but not so quickly. That's it I think. Ciao Tomas

BTW, In "Air Gardens of Brazil", 1945, The Fosters described collecting in 1940 what became V. forsteriana. It was collected near what they said was the Morro de Sal (mountain of salt) in Brazil, probably in Espirito Santo (they are really bad with locations). They found the plant "in the broiling hot sun, in pure sand, but surrounded by a humid valley". I had no luck finding the place with google, but they did say it was up in the mountains where it got quite cool at night. They also said that they found Aechmea racinae in the same area.

Jack,

That is a good looking plant.

What type of light do you give it?

I grow my few vrieseas in fairly low light areas but I think that they would probably do better with a little more light.

Stunning Looks!! Hope the leaf pattern holds that really nice spotting as it gets older. How old is this plant Jack ?.

Thanks for your kind comments guys ,the plant is about 4 years old ,it wont be a giant as its not bred for that, i grow most of my Vrieasea in very bright light ,but some need a bit more shade ,and some just good light ,it depends on the genetic make up ,but very good light is best for the bulk ,the spotting has improved as plant gets bigger and so has the colour ,and yes Nev , Sylvie is a beautyfull young lady ,it is allways the unexpected that makes it all worthwhile , i will post a couple of the others later ot of same cross, Jack

Quick follow up ,am going to have to rename that pink Vriesea ,my lady friend would like it named Vr'.Miss Sylvie' so thats it .her word goes.

Hi Jack,

Very nice plant Vr'.Miss Sylvie'. Everyone will be jealous the plant has name after her. I have no experience about this type of brom. Vrieseas don't like hot weather of Thailand.

How about your Al.vinicolor? My Werauhia fail to set seed. I wait for a month looking at its flowers. Nothing happened to my plants. The ovaries are not accreted. I'm sure they are abort. Hope you have a good luvk about your plant.
