Here is my Echinopsis also

This year she had 47 blooms open up so far. This is what they look like when you remove the babies as they appear. The plant concentrates on itself & taller growth when potted. She is probably around 9-10 years old now, but unsure, possibly younger. Easy for me to loose track of time. I thought she was done growing when she reached 3' mark, but still growing. The plant now has 3 growth looking heads on it. This has been a good year so far, as instead of the blooms dying off the next morning when sun hit them, they lasted for two full days & nights. Going to be potting into a bigger pot once blooms are done & plucked off this next week.

I have some that have had the pups taken off as you mentioned, but they haven't grown as fast as yours. The tallest I have is about 1' and it is probably 7 years old or so, I'm not very good with time either. Beautiful plant you have there.

There's just "something" about Echinopsis. Those hollow flowers just intrigue me. Where does one get these beautiful hybrids?

I withheld from saying this in my first post because I thought others would chime in. I know you have very few fish, but you also have VERY little water. You have one koi and one koi needs 500 gallons, you have a max. guesstimate of 250 gallons. You also have other fish. IMO you are already over stocked and you're adding chemicals. Your pond had not had the time to develop natural benefical bacteria and I would think what beneficial bacteria that did happen to develop, you unknowlingly killed. Slow it down and let nature take it course. As for the koi, I feel sorry for it. It needs more space. Sorry for ragging on you, but you're wanting spristine results in a poorly planned enviorment. Read a bit more about ponds and fish, etc, etc. You'll get the hang of it and hopefully not at a lot of more fish deaths.

Lithops seedlings grow fastest with consistent warmth and moisture with fairly high humidity. This works well for the first couple of months to put on a lot of growth quickly. Eventually, certainly once the first true leaves come through, you'll need to give them strong light, lower humidity, and more temperature variation, or they will just bloat up so badly they will die. Lithops seedlings are also quite happy in the sun, even very strong sun, but they must not be allowed to overheat. On a cool day or when there is a reasonable breeze, full sun is fine. On hot still days in summer you will definitely need to shade them. Lithops will colour up strongly even before the first true leaves appear, this is normal. L. aucampiae will go a dark reddish brown. Any sign of bleaching is a warning that they are overheating. A boiled Lithops will go completely white or transparent, it is then effectively dead. In the sun you will need to water quite frequently during the first summer. Don't allow the pots to completely dry through until winter is approaching. Although regular water is needed, you probably still want to protect the little Lithops from torrential rains or long continuous periods of rain. Faucaria seedlings will grow under more or less the same conditions. Definitely don't allow them to dry out completely. Most cactus seedlings, your Echinopsis for sure, will not like full sun at this size. Try some morning sun when they get a little bigger. Watch the colour carefully, dark green is good, some brownish shades like yours is OK, strong red is too much light, crimson or pink is damaged by the light. Pale green or yellow usually means they need more light but be careful since it could also indicate overwatering, too cold, or nutrient problems. Cactus seedlings will grow successfully for the first year or two with constant high humidity. I keep seedlings in a propagator for at least two or three months. In the open air they should be watered regularly and not allowed to dry out completely until cooler weather arrives in autumn.

Thanks Norma, I'm sorry if I came across as complaining about the size; it was just meant to be an observation. Some of the hybrids I have received from other sellers have been small also, some were not rooted and were more expensive. So I'm very happy with my Huntington order! And I was expecting my order to take 6 weeks and I got it in 4 so I was pleasantly surprised. I know Huntington Gardens' main business is not being a retail nursery so it is worth the wait to get these little gems. I hope they will always be available to the public. And thanks for the info about the Johnson hybrid. From an old catalog I have and pictures on the web, it sounds/looks like it is more of an apricot color. I found a source, but it is described as being light orange so I was just wondering. You are right about people seeing color differently and maybe light orange is apricot? Okay--I'm off to pot up my new lovelies. DZ

riverrat1 - this is one of the few places where people could understand someone having a jam collection! That is one delicious sounding package. I'm pretty sure no one else here would appreciate the tangerine marmalade as much as I would. Or the blackberry jam. So if you would be so kind, just put them back in the box, stuff a little newspaper in there (you know, to keep them from breaking - wouldn't want them bouncing around like bb's in a boxcar, now would we?) and ship them on over here. Oh, and I tasted pickled watermelon rind for the first time this past June asn LOVED it. You can put that one in there too, just to balance out the box. Thanks.

Beautiful plant.

Very tall as well. I have one about a foot tall that somebody gave me last year but it had never flowered for them apart from one time and they said the flower was scarlet which is intriguing. It has 5 buds on it at the moment. It was taller but I had to bury quite a bit of it in the compost because it was growing to one side and kept falling over. It is also a prolific pup producer.

I do believe the tall one is Echinopsis "Los Angeles" a hybrid of unknown origin that was grown for years in the L.A. area of California and was named by Echinopsis hybrid pioneer Harry Johnson and offered in his catalog years ago.

Yes, I thought it looked like 'Los Angeles' also.

The plant body on that hybrid has a unique look somehow and your plant has that look.

Yes, Paul & Toni-Marie, it is Echinopsis "Los Angeles"... & yes, you do get to running out of friends & family to give them to after a while. I am forever tossing my offsets out into the yard, as soon as I see them. Just gave away two yearlings yesterday that needed homes & still got a couple more....Dave, email me your address!

Jim, E."Los Angeles" seems the easiest to grow. They seem to handle much more water, fertilizer, and even can be grown in reg. potting soil, unlike all my other cacti. All of mine have spent thier lives growing under these circumstances and you can see the results. They get fertilized rather regularly. Your is very beautiful Jim, your doing something right. : )

Toni, I am also intrigued about the color on yours so make sure you post it. I would love to get ahold of some "non-typical hybrids of Echinopsis. Other than this, the yellow & white I already have. I'd like to find some red or orange or something. Save me a baby or two, if they are different!! I may have something around here to make you a deal for them.

I'll be sure to post it when it flowers. When it comes to swapping, I can't really do it with anybody outside the European Union anymore. We have to put return addresses on all parcels now so I don't want to risk sending something falsely declared and all plants are governed by the CITES regulations now when sending internationally. Even hybrids.

I have over 100 Echinopsis hybrids with flowers of all different colours. I'll be posting photos of them when they start blooming. Many of them have buds. I have Los Angeles too but mine is only a smaller plant.

Still, you will be able to obtain hybrids over your way easy enough.
You can order some schick hybrids from the ISI huntington website. Have a look at their plant catalogue with the photos.
Also, miles 2 go do some hybrids and their plants, service and prices are very good. They don't ship outside the U.S but I did have somebody in the U.S order some stuff for me then send them here themselves.

Also, try google and look for online cactus nurseries in the U.S who do mail order and then look in their plant lists. I'm sure you'll find quite a few who have echinopsis and trichopsis hybrids in their lists.
Thats how I found more sources over here in the UK before finding fellow collectors and getting myself into an echinopsis hybrid swap group where we exchange surplus pups and stuff.

Anyway, I hope this helps.
