Cactus and Succuleents can take the heat. I would remove them from the soil, and roll them in 2 layers of newspapers, like a sausage. put the label inside, and seal it tightly after they are rolled up, if you want to protect yourself against the spines, I would use shreaded newspaper making a nest, roll it up in the shredded newspaper, then put them put on 2 layers of newspaper and roll as if it was a sausage. start on the corner, roll, fold up the ends and roll again until all paper is used up. Put in a box and do not close, do not let sit by the car window where the sun shines in. Keep as cool as possible. They can stay months like this, so not to worry. Bring a box full every time you go to your new location. Put in the garage, until you move in. These are succulents right, not African Violets, believe me they should be okay. We send to Europe, often taking 10 days to arrive and send out to the customers. They all do fine. Inspect the roots and plant for insects, and spray with Windex if you see bugs, good luck, the plants will flower for you, water in well when you plant them and don't fertilize until their roots are established again. You can nest your pots that are similar in size and shape. Cut up a cardboard box in strips a few inches wide and long enough to run lip to lip when placed inside a pot. Put 2 or 3 strips in each pot and then place another pot inside that pot.

Six or seven hours in the back of U-Haul or similar in the desert in the summer may cook many succulents and perhaps even some cacti unless insulated. The professional movers I have seen roll them into a cylinder of wrapping paper and pack the end with crushed newspaper. Then sit them in boxes to keep them from shaking around too much. Not unlike dufflebag2002 suggested only they did not bother to remove them from the pots and used more serious wrapping than a couple of layers of newspapers.

Read my post gain, and see How I wrap, I start with a couple of layer, I roll it once turn in the ends roll it again, turn in the ends, roll it again, by the time I finish I have at least 6 layers, plus the ends rolled in. They travel all over the world this way, and we don't get damage, the nest of shredded paper for the cactus makes the installatiion even better no spine damage as well, we never ship with soil. If you are stopped at the boarded some state will not let you get through. Hot trucks will not matter at all, cactus live in deserts, so do succulents. direct sun will burn them. Make sure that they are dry so they won't rot. If you packe them correctly there will be no place in the box to shake around. I've done this for 17 years now, no problems. The nesting thing, I lay out a round pile of shredded newspaper, and them wrap the plant top and bottom all around then lay this ball on the paper and proceed to wrap. I have many Mammillaria Pilcayensis, Hildewintera golden monkey/rat tail(?), Christmas cacti and epiphyllum to care, I will take Norma suggestion for them. I believe it will save them from any damage. And, for older cacti such as mammillaria elongata and other that have bunch of babies/clumps, Randy's opinion is really help, I don't think I want to dig them out from the pots.

I may have to start saving old newspapers from now on as well as looking for moving boxes for my babies.

Oh ya, we area moving from Northern CA to high desert/Inland Empire, the cacti land. Hope they will doing better down there.

Meli, what about plant sleeves? They're fantastic..Each sleeve is matched by pot size..this way, there's no unpotting and repotting..moving is hectic as it is, let alone worrying about redoing plants already done.
It's worse if you have several, (more than 30) plants to relocate..Good luck in the move, and I hope you figure out a safe way hauling plants from point A to point B..Toni

Aha, I've never heard about plant sleeves before. Toni, thanks for mentioned it. I seached online and I found other forum talking about it as well.

You are right, I have more than 30 of terracotta and ceramic pots. Some big, some small. The big plants are the problem; honestly, I don't want to unpotting any of them, if I could.

Now, I have to search for plant sleeves or baskets. Any idea?
