Water them only when you are sure the soil is close being dry down to the bottom of the container. you can stick some kind of wooden stick into the soil and let it set for a while. If it comes up damp with soil stuck to it, then there is plenty of moisture in the soil. If it comes up mostly clean and you don't see much moisture on it, you know it is time to water. After a while, you will pretty much be able to just pick up the container and judge how wet the soil is by how light or heavy it feels. Just don't keep them soaking wet and don't let them completely dry out. If you keep a close watch, the plants will tell you when they are drying out but with seedlings it is more critical to watch them close. With full grown plants, they can take lack of moisture better. Salevane, very nice container and plant. I think you do not need to add more soil, it looks perfect to me. I think there are so many varieties of "standard red chili peppers". According to the different variety the sizes of the plants are also different. Bigger container grow bigger plants and yield a lot of fruits. If the container is small the size of the plants usually compact. I have read 5 gallon is a good size for chilli but most of our chili enthusiasts here in DK use about 2 gallon, they are doing pretty good. Some times my small container plants have early flowers and pods, when I re-potted to bigger containers they grow bigger/healthier and produced a lot of pods. DF is very forgiving when it comes to soil. But put together a good, well draining mix. Really, any good potting soil from the store will do. You didn't include the zone you are in. Can the plant be kept outdoors? If so, I would plant it in the ground versus the container. If not, find a decent sized tub, nothing crazy big. You'll need to figure out a way to support the plant as it grows and starts to branch out. There is tons of pictures and info out on the web about DF support. You should get plenty of ideas there. If the plant is outside when blooming, you may get enough insects to pollinate. I would still help them along and hand pollinate each bloom. They will open up after it gets dark. Once open, get a brush about the size of your thumb and start knocking off the pollen into your hand. Go around to the other flowers and deposit a bunch of pollen into the stigma of the flower. Just keep repeating that with each flower. come morning, the blooms will start to die off. Hopefully in a few days, you will see a small DF starting to form.
