Butterfly Garden

Native plant sale in Dayton, they have milkweed

During my spring plant search I noticed that The Marianist Environmental Education Center (MEEC) in Dayton is having a native plant sale on June 20. They also have a training session on gardening native plants on June 13 but I will not be able to go. I called them as I was looking for Virginia Snakeroot. They did not have it but the woman was very helpful. Here is there number and their website.

(I hope this is not considered advertising. I know gardenweb has rules about that. MEEC is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating about the environment and holds a fundraiser by selling native plants)

Yes, I will be giving the talk on natives and butterflies the weekend before the sale (I get around, in fact that afternoon I am helping out with the bioblitz at Grant Nature park. Like I said we are a small active butterly community). If you come to the sale the following Saturday (June 20th)I will be there in the AM. They will have a ton of great plants for the butterfly gardener. The nice thing is that they come in conetainers for $3 each. Small but a good inexpensive way to get started with things that are hard to find elsewhere. Here is a partial list of what you can get. I can't post it all here;

Thanks for the good info on the plant sale!

I'd love to go up and get some of those plants.

Did you say they will have different milkweeds?

I'm having the darnedest time finding MWs down here. The garden centers say they have sold them out completely at the suppliers.

Just a reminder that the Georgia Native Plant Society's annual plant sale will be this Saturday in Marietta from 10 am to 2 pm. McFarlane Nature Park 280 Farm Road SE Marietta, GA 30067 We haven't had the sale for 2 years due to the drought, so we are pulling out all the stops to have a huge sale. Trees, shrubs, perennials, ferns, bog plants - all native. Plants were rescued from construction sites, donated by nurseries and members, grown from seed and some were even purchased just for this sale (several hundred native azaleas, for example). We'll have extra people on hand to help answer questions and give suggestions. Have a mystery native plant? Bring a piece and we'll try to identify it. I'll be hanging out in the tree/shrub area - stop by and say hi.

Why do people do that? Everything looks better with large trees! After hearing that, I think I'd be inclined to leave the trees and wait to see signs of distress. It does seem like maples can take a lot. The house across the street had a maple that was planted directly under the power lines, so aside from the trunk, the top of the tree was cut in a C. To say it looked odd...! My best friend had maple trees over in Braidwood. She really wanted to plant under them. The roots were practically on top of the soil, so she had someone haul in soil and we spread it out over top of all those roots. When it came to planting, we were forever running into roots. She got out the sawzall and that's how we cut the roots. I've read that you don't put soil over roots, there was no talking her out of it. That was over 18 yrs ago and the trees, when they moved out 2 yrs ago, were still fine. Now this is nothing compared to what's happened to yours. So I don't know. It's just with the birds that you're seeing, I'd be inclined to leave them. I do know a guy though that has a sawzall. I'd probably go ahead and buy a redbud and borrow that sawzall and go ahead and plant the redbud. But that's me and I've done it before. Gray dogwood must be more tame for other people. That was another shrub that we had to remove. At the back of our very small lot, we have a privacy fence. The gray dogwood was near it, then we made a path leading from the garage to a door we'd made in the fence. After 4 yrs the dogwood was coming up on the other side of the fence, the other side of the path and you could tell that the roots were going under the garage. We've got cracks in the floor, so who knows when it's going to pop up! Ha! I planted Silky dogwood the year after I planted the Gray dogwood. I'm not finding the Silky to be anywhere near as aggressive as the Gray was. They have it for sale at the plant sale you're going to. It's Latin name is Cornus obliqua. I also have the Corylus americana. I like it, I like it a lot. For some reason, after I planted it, the Japanese Beetles showed up. I'd never had them before. Maybe just a coincidence. It's a spreader too, but much easier to control with the spade. There's also more viburnums that would do great in shade. I know it says sun to part sun, most of mine are in shade and doing great.

Hi Ann;
Yes, I was there yesterday to give a talk for the presale. They have A. incarnata (swamp), A. syriaca (common), and A. tuberosa (butterfly). All have been legally collected from seed at ohio sites. I would recommend the incarnata personally. We have lot's of discussions on this site about milkweed. I think it takes up about a third of our posts :). However, studies (of which some are available on-line and some summarized at monarchwatch)indicate the following; monarchs lay preferentially on incarnata, caterpillars grow slower on tuberosa due to the lower water content, up to 80% (I think, don't remember the exact percentage but it is high) of first instar caterpillars are lost on milkweed often due to latex. Syriaca has one of the highest latex contents so I don't recommend it. In addition, it can be a thug in the garden. If you have a prairie area it's a great plant but not for the suburban back yard.

Get there early. The sale starts at 8:30 but you can come a little early and look. I will be there till lunch time. Milkweeds always sell out. They are popular. Alternatively you can download a form from their website and send in a pre-order. They are very nice there.

Thank you for the details on the MWs. Very interesting.

I have some incarnata and some tuberosas (and a few curassavicas) but I need several more for a woodland area we are creating for the bfs.

We have the syriaca in the butterfly meadow in our neighborhood and I just walked thru today and saw it teaming with pollinators but only 2 monarchs yet. Interesting about the latex issue. I was not aware of that.

And I just found the long list (pdf) of plants for the sale and it's quite impressive. I wish I had done some pre-ordering to make things more efficient. I am really hoping to take a drive up there Saturday and snag some of the really hard to find plantlings.

I am sorry I missed your talk, too. I seldom see much interest in BF around here and I would have liked to learn more. Are you associated with Wild Ones or Oh. Lep., I wonder?

I have friends associated with wild ones but I don't do that. I think we will dip our toes in Ohio Leps this year. Mostly they do stuff around the Columbus area. Too far to trek.
