new at winter sowing...help!

This will be my first try at winter sowing and I am very afraid because I don't have a clue! I live in central Minnesota, so it is very cold - anybody out there who lives here too that can guide me through starting my winter sowing project? Thanks so much for the help! I know I have been missing from GW, but my husband was sick over the fall, so I am trying to get back into the "swing" of things again.

Have you read the Winter Sowing FAQ yet?
Many people live way north of you such as in Canada and Alaska. They have Winter Sown with success and more.

I do from six to about a dozen or more (up to a good, thick sprinkle) to a used plastic bottle, depending on the plant and how crazy I feel. You can sow a whole lot and plant a whole bunch and let the seedlings fight it out when you transplant them, but I prefer to keep all of them and separate them later. You can sow medium-densely and separate them once the seedlings produce a couple of pairs of seed leaves. They should be pretty easy to separate then. As for how deep to bury them, as carrie said, read up on them, as some need light, some need dark, etc. What I usually do is just cover them lightly with soil or sand or something to keep the seed solidly in the soil, so that some light still comes through, and let the daily light cycles do the rest. After all, that's how they naturally germinate. Good luck!

Lantana reseeds here. So I've already sown mine. Datura should wait just a bit. I'll sown mine in late March. Too much moisture will rot the seeds. Brugs need warmth, I've started mine indoors in a moist paper towel stuffed in a baggie. Castor beans are warm weather plants too. Wait til frost is gone. Cleome likes a little cold. I've sown mine now. Had good luck sowing them in March too. Parsley is another that I would wait on the frost to end. Bachelor buttons can go out now. Not sure about the others, but I've sown my godetia. First time with it.

I just decluttered my kitchen area & got rid of a few of those infamous piles (as in how does all of this stuff accumlate so quickly?) - and filled up a whole waste basket of torn paper!!! yeah composting!!! My daughter (age 6) came up w/the solution to keeping the dog out of the basket (i.e. the dog who loves to eat any paper item). A family effort :) I just love it. My husband started giving me strange looks (actually called me that "obsessive" word) today about me taking the rotten grapes out of the garbage that he had thrown away instead of setting aside for the CP - I thought to myself that he hasn't seen anything - he should read some of the items on the "compost wacko" thread, on which I don't even YET rate :)

Wow! I got my seeds! It took a little detective work to figure out what swap this package belonged to, but once the fear of having lost my mind were over and i started pulling out my seed packets and recording them, the pleasure stretched out to 181 packets of a great variety of seeds, thanks to all of you, my new GGF(great and generous friends). you guys are de bom! The assortment is awsome considering that there was no want list matchups at all. Cathy, awsome job sorting our packages, I only got 2 of my own seeds, and the rest was just pure pleasure to receive and record! Thank you. Chris

great health wishes to you and your hubby coming New Year!
Once you read all FAQ, ask what else will be unclear. I live in zone 5 and normally I do not start my WS until mid Feb, when I do plants that need few weeks of cold weather to germinate. You can check Tom Clothier germination website. Whenever it says - place in +4C-4C for 3-4-5-6 weeks, germination irregular, sow at max 41- it would work just fine for WS. Many seeds do not actually need cold period to germinate so I start them later on- March, April.
Those plants that are tropical or those that can not take even slightest chill and kill over at first signs of frost better to be started indoor.
