Look at these volunteer 'weeds'

Hey all!

It's been a while since I've posted here, but I do check in often.

Yesterday as I was doing some spring cleaning around the yard (including some notorious weeding...), I came across these two small "weeds" that looked a lot like brug seedlings. Just then I remembered that I had let some brug seed pods drop their seeds there last fall! Here are some pictures I took with my phone. Sorry for the bad quality.

Interesting thing - this last Monday we had a sudden drop in temperatures and got some patchy frost here and there. Some new growth on my larger brugmansias wilted from the low 30s, but these seedlings are unfazed! And they definately look older than a week. At least the first one does, it has it's first pair of true leaves.

BTW, Elizabeth, I just sent out your package of seeds this weekend. Be on the lookout for them this week.

Hey Josh, that's pretty good! I hope they continue growing for you. Amazing how sometimes when one just let's things go through their natural process, you get more successes, but when you take so much care wanting to help it (seeds) do it's job, you fail, LOL! I am speaking for myself and my experience (failure) with sowing seeds :-) BTW, I tried sowing the poppies and impatiens seeds from you indoors, and they sprouted and died. I then sowed the poppies directly outdoors and now have seedlings! I hope they flower and will post pix.

Is it a vine? It may be Solanum jasminoides, or potato vine. I lived for over 20 years in Northern CA and only one time did I see pokeweed, but don't know if poke grows in the Central Valley (I know the climate is definitely not the same there as in Sonoma!) But Potato Vine seemed to be pretty much a universally used fast, thick grower for problem areas. The individual blooms will look a bit like those of tomato plants, and its purple berries are small. Stems and foliage often take on a purple tinge depending on light exposure. Folks either love it because of its vigor and reliability or hate it because it's "overused."

Huh, I'm not sure what it is either, but I agree with you, the leaves are interesting enough to keep it for now. Please post some updates if you get a positive ID or if it blooms, whichever comes first. Neat to see, thanks for posting it! Happy gardening! Grant

I just went out there to look for some then there was a tiger swallowtail nectaring at the Agapanthus beside them so I ran back in for the camera. I think I got some good shots. The past week or so our butterfly season down here has really been picking up. I have seen more tiger swallowtails than ever before in my gardens. They are usually flying up high. A couple days back I saw a dark or blue phase tiger female laying eggs on the tulip poplar up high in the tree. Yesterday I saw the most ever spicebush swallowtails on one tree. Actually, I've only seen one at a time before, but there was atleast a ten of them in my neighbors sassafras tree. It has been slow for me all year as far butterfly numbers and diversity until the past week or so, and now there is all sorts of stuff goin on. My pipevines have been mowed down all year though. Do lady bug larvae eat butterfly eggs? I saw one on the Mock bishop's weed and looked like he was licking something off the plant? Miss Sherry if I find some BST eggs or see some being laid I will collect them.

Those are my kind of weeds lol. That is pretty cool.
Maybe your seedlings will be more hardy when they grow up than the bigger ones now...
I also have a few coming up in the island bed where a couple smaller NOL seed pods stems froze, so I figured the seeds were too immature and buried the whole seedpods 'just in case'. These pods were only about half mature I think, and they apparently still had some good seeds.

Eloise, I know what you mean. I spent about $30 worth of seeds (uncommon seeds) and I only have a couple of measly plants to show for it. I had a lot of seedling die to dampening off. I'll try again now that the weather outside allows for sowing outdoors.

SJN, I wonder what color brugs these will be? The parent is a large white and the grandparent was a Charles Grimaldi. The pods were open pollinated and I have a Frosty Pink tree that was blooming at the same time. I'll keep track of these.

Oh and crossing my fingers for those tiny seedlings that popped up. I love those the best. You have just joy. No worry. Cause they did it all by them selves lol

Fantastic Josh. I love the closeups of the rose, cherry and apricot. The cymbidium is beautiful; I am going to the Santa Barbara Orchid Show on Saturday, and hopefully will find something equally beautiful to buy, LOL!

I would guess that with those two parents you will prob get a mostly single whites. A few may be yellow if one of the parents is CG or pink if they are from the Frosty Pink. Of course, some whites like Miss B'havin for example, have pink genes. Of course bees can travel @ 7 miles or so to pollinate lol. So really no telling unless the flowers were pollinated before they were opened and tied shut after. It will be a suprise :)

The thing to watch for in your seedlings are stuff like disease resistance, fragrance, vigor, size and shape of the flower, ease of rooting, unusual leaves, etc.
I think whites are great for the moon garden and of course the best thing is, they are your babies that are in this world because of you! Be sure to post photos when they bloom.

Hey Ibartoo, I don't think you'd want to trade brugs with me. I only have a Frosty Pink and a NOID single white. haha. I think I'm going to try an orange or a yellow colored brug this season though.
