What seeds will you be winter sowing on Saturday?

Seeds of Remembrance - In honor of my Great Aunt Johnny Jump Ups

Seeds of Life - (Fruit or Nectar) American Persimmon trees

Seeds of Trees - Golden Rain Trees

Seeds of Faith - Seeds that are at least six years old

Once my first seed order from Swallowtail arrives (which may be not until after Saturday, but we will see), I shall be planting these:

Remembrance- "Soulmate" Milkweed. Anything that attracts butterflies reminds me of my one best friend who passed away tragically six years ago in a car wreck the summer before senior year in high school.

Life- "Milkmaid" Milkweed, since the Monarchs lay their eggs on milkweeds.

Trees-I don't have any tree seeds, but for that, I shall plant either "Blue Globe" Globe Thistle or some "Pretty Betsy" Jupiter's Beard. They both look like a miniature tree or remind me of the structure of a tree.

Faith- Veronica "Sightseeing Mixture". I haven't had much luck with WSing Veronicas/Speedwells. So, I shall plant them and have faith that I shall see sprouts when the warmer weather arrives.

I will observe solstice by sowing various clematis seeds. My garden beds are too full and I have many plants still in holding beds so won't be planting different seeds for each part of the celebration, only the clematis seeds.

Thank you for the reminder! I've been looking forward to my annual solstice planting for weeks now, but, alas, have been sick and probably would have forgotten. I'm with you on the date, so did a little research. It's usually December 21st, but occasionally falls on the 22nd. One site gave a time of 6:08 a.m., another 6:12 a.m. (alright, close enough) but another gave a time of 1:08 a.m. Finally, Chiff.com cleared it all up with the following: "In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice occurs on December 22, 2007 at 1:08 AM EST; and at 6:08 AM UT (Universal Time)." Not being much of a morning person, however, I'm leaning toward a mid-day planting, based on the following from the NOAA site: "The Winter Solstice or astronomical winter begins on December 22, when the noontime sun is farthest south in the sky in the Northern Hemisphere." Noon is good - thank you NOAA. Lots of people do something called "wintersowing" - there's a forum by that name here on GardenWeb. I've tried it and, overall, would say it's very effective - no greenhouse needed. Severl of the people over there really get into the celebration aspect ... go check it out :-) Thanks to your reminder, I will be doing a "ceremonial" planting tomorrow, using four sets of seeds, one each for Remembrance, Life, Mother Earth and Faith. A link to the GW page explaining this is below in case you're interested, however, last year instead of tree seeds for M. Earth I planted legume seeds, and for Faith planted some very old seeds I had found. Enjoy your solstice sowing, whenever you decide to do it, and I hope it's a productive one. Here's a little more information about winter solstice seed sowing (this is from Trudi's wintersowing site, here's a link for further information - http://www.wintersown.org/wseo1/Solstice_Celebration.html): On December 21st please celebrate the Winter Solstice by sowing four sets of seeds. Each separate set of seeds will honor Remembrance, Life, Mother Nature, and Faith. The first set of seeds are seeds of remembrance and should be seeds of flowers that remind us of someone we knew and loved but who is now gone from our lives forever. The second set of seeds should be for plants that will make fruit or nectar and invite birds and butterflies to our gardens. The third set of seeds should be tree seeds. We can honor Mother Nature by growing trees that will help clean the air we breathe, reduce excess sun on the soil, and provide shade for our heads on a hot summer's day. The fourth set of seeds should be for plants from a zone that is beyond ours in warmth. It will help us to remember that we accept the "Leap of Faith" in our hearts and know that Mother Nature is capable of miracles. I am in zone seven and I will "Solstice Sow" the seeds of faith for plants that are only hardy to zone eight.

I hadn't intended to actually sow on the solstice, but now that I've read this thread, I will definitely sow 4 containers. The solstice has always been celebrated in my culture, though I admit I have not been the best at carrying out those traditions since I became a mother. Life - Canterbury Bells - In the town I grew up in, the local church always rang the church bells when a wedding happened or when a baby was born in town. Bells symbolize the beginning of life to me. Mother Nature - Siberian Iris - I threw all my Siberian Iris and Blue Flag seed pods in one bag all mixed together. This will be the opportunity to see what survives! Remembrance - Moonbeam Coreopsis - This original plant came from my grandmothers house. She has since died and the house has been sold - so saving seed has been the only way I can get more of my grandmothers gardens. Faith - Luminaria - aka Money Plant. Though my family has not suffered through this multi-year recession, it has taught us that money is not as important to survival as once thought. You need to have faith in your own abilities. By growing luminaria, we will always have plenty of money!

I put out 4 jugs today for solstice too... the beginning of the wintersowing season!

Remembrance: Zinnias (my great grandmother's family name was Zinniak)

Life: Lady in Red Salvia (for the butterflies and bees)

Tree: Mimosa

Faith: Seeds gathered here and there - or "what I did on my summer vacation"

Glad to join the tradition with all of you. And a special "Thanks" to wintersown.org for getting me started on all of it.

Happy Solstice to everyone ! I participated, a little....

I found a few minutes for me in what was a really busy day with way too many interruptions and sowed my helleborus foetidus seed that arrived moist packed this week.

I really wish I were clever enough to make that significant somehow, but what can I tie stinking hellebore, aka bears foot hellebore, to so I can announce some kind of meaningful connection ;)

I wanted it, I like this plant, what else can I say. In my former garden it was blooming for me by Halloween and still looked good in May and I didn't bring it with me when I moved. Also the deer don't bother it, so the helleborus seeds became my little bit of celebrating this afternoon.

I like reading your solstice meaningful connections. Altho I have not yet done any planting I did receive a surprise in the mail,
Sweetgrass seeds.
I don't remember ordering them, maybe they are a sample. Sweetgrass is regarded as sacred by Native Americans, and I do remember writing to one catalog company and asking them if they carried it.
It is said to smell like vanilla.
