Thank you Alex. I think it is happy. I also think the owner would be happy to be heading toward Tucson. Perhaps the day will be not too far away.

That is a great example of microclimates JoJo! The time spent at the minimum temperature (minutes, hours, days) plays a big role in what temperatures a plant can survive. So does the amount of water in the plant, and in the soil. Dry plants are much more tolerant of cold compared to wet plants. Plants in the ground can survive colder temperatures than plants in pots. I have found most of my plants can tolerate much lower temperatures than typically listed. These lows are brief, just a few hours at most, and it's at least 20 degrees warmer during the day. So plants that are supposed to not go below the mid-thirties F can tolerate minimum temperatures in the high twenties. Agave ferdinand-regis is listed at both +5, and -12 in the list above. The difference between a minimum average temperature, absolute minimum temperature, and Fahrenheit and Celsius scales is often confused. Minimum temperature listings should be regarded with great suspicion, even when coming from a more or less credible source like Desert-Tropicals. It is better to research the plants natural environmental conditions. I would not give much credence to this, or any other so called 'minimum temperature' list. I searched high & low and found that I have an aversion to paying ridiculous shipping prices 0_0 I found this one place on line that had like 6 plants that I wanted, but not only did they want a 50$ minimum on plant material, but also tacked on a whopping 18$ (to start) for shipping. Gah?!! Ebay is a rip too & it totally chaps my hiney to do it but when I say I'm seeing these plants in my sleep, I'm not kidding. I started a running list of my wish list plants & noted how much I paid & where I got 'em from. I on the hand, have watered my Tylecodon panniculata, wallichi and cacalioides all summer long (all are in the ground) without any 'upset' plants as a result. My soil is pretty clay-filled, too, so sometimes the soil can stay a bit muddy for weeks after I water too well. Perhaps in pots these are more finicky plants, but in the ground they do not appear to be. Never seen much in the way of growth except for T panniculata, which will keep its leaves all year round if I water it year round. All start their new leaves in ernest in early to mid fall. By the time winter hits, they have pretty much put out their full set of leaves, so to say these are winter growers may not be totally accurate. They sure seem to tolerate winter rains well, though, but mine are pretty much through their major growing by January. And flowers are in the late spring for me, at least on T wallichii (not seen the other two flower yet). I have rooted this latter species all year round, summer or winter... seems not to make a lot of difference (super easy one to root from cuttings by the way, which are in abundance if an ground-grown plant- these need trimming yearly).

It was chopped that tall but branching is hit or miss. Some times they don't branch this nicely. I have one that just sent out one branch after cutting. You'll have two if you chop it. If you do it water normally to encourage fast growth. Your plan would be safest, mine a bit more risky....and you know me, chop big!!

Dan -- It's T. wallichii, Mesa garden seed #2993. (Steven still offers it in his catalogue.) I remember the seed was like dust and the seedlings emerged by what seemed the hundreds. Of course that was well back in the previous millennium.

Alex -- I'm giving serious thought to sometime in February unless a lot of rain falls soon. Then I might postpone a month or so to see some springtime flowering.

Dear Al,

I'll show a pic of my T. wallachii when I get to it, but I was wondering if that was what you have there; where are the knobbies on the stem? Perhaps there is a variety that is without knob...

Yours is spiking, too! Mine shows no sign of a flower (sniff).

Did y'all know that, while all Tylecodons are poisonous, this one is thought to be the most poisonous of all? If you have one, wear gloves even when repotting.

This plant never did have those persistent "knobbies". I formerly had one other from the same seed batch which had them; of course it was the one to go away one cold and wet winter. The survivor is not excessively large but is a reliable bloomer. I find the foliage more relaxed than I might like. (December/January sun is not the brightest here.) Many thanks for the reminder of it's poisonous nature. I'm sure I knew that once upon a time. Luckily I've kept it high and far from brushing/nibbling kittens. I probably would never have known what happened and if I did I would never forgive myself. With the great informational records kept by digital cameras I might try to determine when it began spiking last year.
