OT: picture of the day : yellow Kangaroo Paw

WELCOME and good morning.....IT IS SPRING !!!!!!!!! (well in a few hours lol)

Now I am looking forward to see eveyones gardens start to go green and grow. Bloom and make you and us happy with pictures.

I really was out of it yesterday lol. All that fresh air must be affecting my brain more then usual. Cause I thought the Kangaroo Paw was called Bears Paw. So in my head I put together todays posting rofl. Now it is all wrong.

But can we pretend for today that it is called a bears paw?

Why...it is simple.

I had a blast trying to brighten those winterdays for us with the POTD. Now that spring is here. I will go into hypernation with the POTD, like the BEARS do for winter!! (see the connection? lol)Of course collecting pictures for the coming winter month for us again.

So with all this said I like to show you the last YELLOW picture :

Happy spring Lucy and everybody! What do you mean no picture of the day..That just bites..Not a good way to start spring..I am crying in my coffee....:( I hope you cahnge your mind..This thread we can chat on everyday and catch up with each other..Boo hoo

Over the past several weeks, my sunflower paw-paw had 15-20 flowers and I used my brush to extract yellow pollen from the older (black looking w/ leaves falling off) flowers and paint on to the younger just-opening flowers. The several fruit that looked promising last year were eaten by rodents so I'll have to do a better job of caging the fruit that I hope will grow this year. Wild Haired Mavens, I wish you luck w/ your LA paw paw. They don't do well in direct sun light (I lost 4 last year because my canopy fell off while I was away) and regardless of the species (hopefully sunflower), make sure to hand-pollinate when the flower open to get the best chance of fruits. In the meantime, paw-paws are related to cherimoya (similar taste from what I've read), which I would recommend purchasing if you can find it. They're my personal favorite fruit and can be bought from Home Depot (make sure you buy two to cross pollinate).

Pollination isnt the problem. My sunflower pawpaw is now 3 years old, and a little over 6 feet tall. I produced its first flowers this year and lots of gnats and other things were hitting the flowers pretty good, and there were dozens of blossoms. Most of them formed a fruit very small just like the picture the other poster above posted. They all fell off except for one. It is now around the size of a quarter and appears that it will be staying for good now. I think its just an issue of trees being very young to hold the fruit maybe. I expect a better crop next year. Im satisfied that it is gonna bear anything at all this early and is putting on good growth in branches and height. I believe growing conditions etc. determine when and how the trees will produce their first crops. I had been fertilizing mine according to recommendations and watering during dry spells etc. Someone who might not take as good care of their tree or in poorer soils might not get their first fruit till a couple of years later. There also was no pollinator for this tree, it self pollinated. Im in the middle of town and know there is not another pawpaw for miles at least.

I am aware this thread is over a decade old but it pops up on google when you search for pawpaws in Savannah, and I just wanted to make sure everyone knows that YES, pawpaws are native to Savannah, it's just that dwarf/small-flower pawpaws (asimina parviflora) are more common this far south than common pawpaws (asimina triloba). I've found OVER thirty small-flower pawpaws on Roger Warlick Drive, along the walking path that leads to the recreation field, as on July 14th 2021. Many of the plants even have fruit, and there are more on the other side of the road as well! If you are also wandering here from google, looking for where to find pawpaws in Savannah, Georgia, check out iNaturalist.org, / iNaturalist, it's a world-wide database of plants and animals that people submit, so you can find any plants that people have found in your area! Even if none show up where you are, don't be dismayed! You might be the first person on the site to obverse them, like I was with the /literally more than thirty/ plants I found just in a few days of looking! The more people who add to the database, the more locations we'll be able to share! None of the pictures are showing up from the earlier posts, but iNaturalist is also an awesome way to learn how to identify the plants, because you can see hundreds of examples, taken at all different times of the year! Long post short: Pawpaws can 100% be found in Savannah, Georgia, it will just most likely be the smaller small-flower pawpaws instead of the larger common pawpaws. But if just one person has a pawpaw tree that animals are allowed to eat from, those seeds will spread and common pawpaws might become more common here too! Don't give up hope! Check out iNaturalist to see if there are any that have been seen near you, and even if there aren't, it doesn't mean there aren't any, it just means you can be the first to add them!

First of all, you might want to start posting on the CA gardening forum. There are quite a few SoCal gardeners on it. Second, soil and prep are ALWAYS more important than plants. If you have clay soil it won't drain well and watering so often will create root rot. Yes, new plants need to be watered to establish themselves - so it's a fine line between "watering enough" and "drowning", in this case. Your calla lilies will yellow and go away very soon. They HATE hot soil. They are partial shade plants at best, especially in your area. In coastal CA they bloom around Nov/Dec thru mid-May. "Hercules" gets not only very tall but will grow outwards at a steady rate. I wasn't successful with my own Anigozanthosos (kangaroo paw), but when advice says to prune back after flower, they mean the flower STEM, not the whole plant including leaves. Sage can be pruned almost any time, as far as I can tell. But like rosemary, you want to avoid cutting into the woody stems. Cut it back to a pair of leaves - any pair, just so you don't leave it leafless on that stem. Bougainvillea can be touchy about getting established. They hate being transplanted and it's very easy to harm the rootball because it falls apart easily. Once it's adjusted, you can cut back the watering gradually. "Sulking" won't harm it as long as you water as soon as you see the symptoms of leaf curling, etc. Dahlias are prone to root rot, especially when dormant in winter. With your clay soil you might be better off growing them in pots if you refuse to amend your soil. Watering too often and shallowly is a common error for beginners. Most plants prefer watering less often and deeply, and from underneath rather than above. Good luck!

Good morning all. Lucy, beautiful Kangaroo Paw! Sorry I can't help you with how to take care of it as I have killed at least three red ones! Makes me mad because around here I see them in pots in parking lots and in city landscape and they do fine. Perhaps I watered them too much.

Very pretty Lucy. I have the red one but just got it from Patty a couple weeks ago. Its been happy sitting by the pond so far but I have to look up what it likes. Found all the koi and many of the goldfish survived the winter so John is happy. Got the grass cut now I have to go out and take care of a giant spider web I found going all over the plants in the garage. I hope it a regular spider and not mites.

Very pretty with the purple heart in the background. I used to grow the K.Paw in AZ. They like it hot and dry. The soil does not need to be rich.

They don't do well with the humidity here but some of the big box stores are selling them and people kill them because they think they are tropical. I think a clay pot with very well draining soil would help a lot here where its humid and to keep them on a sunny covered patio if it rains alot during the summer.

Thanks for the info SJN. I think my poor princess flower has bit the dust but not quite sure. Most of the limbs are still limber so I moved it outside to see if it will come back to life.

Kristy, Hope your princess flower comes back. Maybe it will as long as it didnt totally freeze. If you want to try again let me know and I will root one for you. I also have the Tibouchina grandifolia shown in this photo.

Hello Lucy!

Nice blooms. I have some kangaroo paws in ground. They are actually very fussy plants. They are from parts in Australia where they experience regular, prolonged drought. They often go dormant in the summer, so summer water will kill them. I have mine on a drip irrigation system and they receive minimal water in the summer, but they also have excellent drainage, so the water just keeps them from going dormant. They are an excellent plant for xeric gardens. I have mine growing alongside aloes, agaves, beschorneria, ice plants, yuccas, sedums...all of which have similar water needs. One other thing, they are very suceptible to a kind of fungus if they are watered overhead. That's why I have mine on a drip system. Do a google search to find out more infomation on them. They are also fussy about soil PH requirements I think. Good luck!

Note: If you remove spent blooms, most varieties will rebloom for you.

That would be awesome Lenette. I really loved that one. I had it in the garage so it didn't freeze and most of the limbs are still limber not brittle so maybe its just dormant I hope. I moved it back outside today and I'll see if I get any new growth. It just all brown. It was dark when I took it out last night and the limb I tested snapped so I thought the whole thing was dead but since most of the others are still limber I have hope. I had never overwintered one before so just hoping now it went dormant.

Well guys it feels strange getting up in the morning and not doing a POTD. Trust me I KNOW how many of you truly enjoyed stopping by. That alone made it very difficult for me to say that I will be back, come winter.

Lucy, you deserve a rest from POTD! It seems like it would not be a big deal, but it is, especially when you posted a pix every day for several months!!!

Lenette and Josh, thanks for the info on the kangaroo paws. I might give them another try.

Lenette, me too! I would love a start of your Tibouchina grandifolia. I find the regular tibouchina here, but never this larger one. Pleeeezzzzzzeee LMK what you want in exchange.

Lucy maybe others should pick up some of the work and post a pic of the day. I am always taking pics but takes me a while sometimes to get them downloaded, lol. I miss getting on here as much but don't have as much time as I did. I usually come visit when I am too tired to do anything else at the moment, lol. I will start posting more pics too. I took one of the turtle today but he wouldnt' stick his head out and co operate with me. Got some pretty little purple crocus blooming too.

Lucy your post of the day will be missed. But hey you can take pics all spring and summer and then show them off next winter when we all will be dying to see some color.

Kristy, I thought my princess flower was dead but is starting to come back out so hopefully yours will too. I keep mine in the garage as well.

Lenette I have never tried to root one. Any special process? Difficult?

Mary, Nothing special really, I just cut under a node (about a 6 inch tip cutting with a few small top leaves left on) and dip the bottom in rooting hormone and put them together in a community pot with lots of perlite mixed into the potting soil. They like a lot of humidity to root but it is usually humid here but if it is dry then I just mist a few times a day.
