Sort answer is yes, probably all Aristolochia species could be used by pipevine feeding Lepidoptera.

As to which ones of the many species would be best in your location, those on the forum closer to your area will have the best answers.

I am in zone 8, this is Ga. Also, which of the ones used can grow in a fair amount of shade? I don't have to plant in shade but if possible I do have the space. Also, what other host plants like shade? I found a seller on the internet that I got Virgina snake root from and it is doing well.

All of the native North American aristolochias are good for pipevine swallowtails, which is the only aristolochia eater you and I have, unless maybe you get lucky enough that a goldrim might drift up from central/south Florida. Also, a. clematitis and a. fimbriata suits them, neither of which is native. Just don't buy any of the tropical pipevines/aristolochias, like calico vine or the giant one, can't remember the name - a. gigantea? Most of the tropical vines are toxic to our pipevine swallowtails/battus philenors.
Would the Virginia snakeroot seller be Rod Angeroth? He's the best!
I find that aristolochia grows best in part sun/shade, but shade will do, and full sun might be alright, too, I don't know that for sure.

I have my tomentosas located in pretty much full sun - at least 8 hours. But, in zone 8 they may do a bit better with some shade.

A lot of the non-native tropicals are toxic to pipevine swallowtails as MissSherry stated.

You might try to find out what is native to your state and plant those.

Sherry, yes Rod Angeroth is who I got the V. snake root plants from. They are in a good bit of filtered shade and I was wanting to have the pipevines close by.

I called the nursery where I bought the pipevine from and she said it is A. littoralis, a tender perrenial here in Ga. (zone 8). Is this a good one? I would like to also get some of the tomentosas where would be the best place to get plants-not seed?

I think I got my tomentosas from Mail Order Natives. A lot of us purchase host plants from them. I got them last year and they are 5' tall this year. They grow fast.

Also, A. clematitis, which is not a vine, is a good one as well. Takes more sun, and the leaves are very tender for edible consumption by the Pipevines.

Be warned, a lot of nurseries are out of pipevines now. I don't know if MON has any left or not. Well, I just checked and they do have some left for $6.00. It's the shipping that kills you.

Susan, thanks, I am about to check that site out. I have been looking up pipevines on the internet and see that several of them are suggested as host plants even the ones mentioned above as toxic. One site said that a. littoralis is actually calico. Is this true? This would mean what I have is toxic.

Susan, you are right their shipping is crazy. I found a site mowildflowers.net that has this pipevine as well as wafer ash, pawpaw and many others. Their shipping is $12.00. Has anyone used them before?

The shipping is not as much if you're ordering a lot of plants. But, one or two will cost you. That said, a lot of companies, like Lazy S's Farm (which I highly recommend) has shipping rates that are now out the gazoo! MON is much cheaper than they are, as is Woodlanders. They usually ship bare root plants and that's probably why their rates are lower.

I believe someone here on the forum orders from Missouri Wildflowers and recommends them as well. I have not personally ordered from them.

Shipping has gone up this last year due to the cost of gas, which filters down to everything else. Postage has also increased, as I'm sure Fed Ex and UPS have accordingly. It's almost impossible to afford ordering from online nurseries anymore.

This is a foreign species that is also supposed to be safe for PVS's to use. The only nursery I know that carries it is Lazy S's. I tried it one year, but it died out. Probably "user error". It is a vine also.

I made an order from Missoouri wildflowers and recieved 2 wafer ash, 2 pipevine, a paw paw,several turtlehead and 2 spice bush. Just planted everyone.

I still need to know if the first pipevine I bought locally A. littorilas is safe or not?

The only ones I am absolutely positive about are:

A. tomentosa
A. macrophylla
A. fimbriata (groundcover)
A. serpentaria (Groundcover)
A. clematitis (groundcover to about 2-3'

I think A. littoralis elegans may be toxic to Pipevines, but okay for Goldrims. But, don't know for sure.
