Neighbor moved to Indiana

Hi all,

My neighbor, who I got into butterfly gardening, moved from FL to Newburg, IN, which is about an hour away from Evansville. She lives in the southwest corner of Indiana. She wants to start a butterfly garden up there and I wanted to see if anyone out there might have some suggestions on plants for her to look for and nurseries in the area. She has a large backyard with lots of trees at the edge of her yard. Any suggestions for hosts and nectars beyond the normal Lowes and HD variety would be appreciated. Also, please send rain to Tampa and Lakeland for Mary. We are in a drought and no rain in the forecast for at least another week.

I wish I could send you some rain. It's been dry here recently, but I got .60" of rain yesterday and 1.00" so far today. I think Florida's rainy season should be starting soon, right?
Indiana, like Tennessee, has a lot of wild growing Asimina triloba so, I'd think there'd be zebra swallowtails - A. triloba would be good planted under the filtered shade of her trees.
Rue/Ruta graveolens for black and giant swallowtails, hoptree/Ptelea trifoliata for giant swallowtails, wild black cherry trees/Prunus serotina for tiger swallowtails and red-spotted purples, tulip tree/Liriodendron tulipifera for tiger swallowtails, dill, fennel and other related members of the carrot family for black swallowtails, sassafras/Sassafras albidum and/or spicebush/Lindera benzoin for spicebush swallowtails, common violets for northern type fritillaries, whatever type of milkweed grows best there for monarchs, cudweed and its relatives for American ladies, whatever type willow thrives best there for viceroys, and pipevines/Aristolochia macrophylla for pipevine swallowtails.
For nectar, the list could be SO long - coneflowers, zinnias, butterfly bush, Mexican sunflowers, milkweeds, and numerous others would be good for her area.

And I thought only people in Ohio made fun of folks from WV... :-) I had a neighbor who'd been pretty nice to us for about 2 years. Then her 16 year old grandson moved in with her because his parents were at the end of their rope with him. Needless to say, Grandma couldn't handle him any better... We had problem after problem with him... She worked during the day and had no idea what when on when she was gone. Complicating things even more, the houses were very very close together. He and his buddies smoked their pot outside so the smoke blew INTO my open doors and windows if it was warm out. The music was so loud is shook and rattled the windows of MY house. He threw cigarette butts, pop cans and assorted trash over the small fence into my yard... I talked to Gramma about the problems and she agreed to put an end to it. It got a bit better for a while. After that I just called the cops. They only had to come twice. The music quit playing and the pot smoking must have gone elsewhere. The trash still got thrown in my yard though. Grandma never got upset with me too much until... I got tired of picking up cigarette butts from my yard when I wanted to mow. I'd been doing it for a year and was tired of it. So, I collected them all (there must have been 50) and put them in a nice pile by her door for the delinquent to dispose of. That ticked her off! She was so mad at me, so I tried to nicely explain that I'd left them there for her grandson to throw away but she just yelled and screamed at me... I finally said, "Whatever makes you feel better." She never spoke to me again. I felt bad about making her mad, but what did she expect?! One time the cops came and talked with her about him after I'd called the police. They told her he'd been smoking weed, skipping school, disturbing the peace and that next time they would arrest him and involve Children's Services. THAT didn't make her mad at me, but picking up cigarette butts did?!?!? Oh well... I never had to pick up another cigarette butt.

Cities will sometimes fine the owner for this. If no owner(bank owned) it will attach to the property taxes. Also if no one comes to pick it up the city may, then attach those charges to the property tax. If it is a rental the owner has to pay. There is a rental house near me. I found the owner on-line through the property tax records and called him and complained and told him I also called the city. He said he was fined for it and is having trash hauled away the next day. I think he was a younger guy that got in over his head buying and renting a distressed property. I did mention I didn't like that rental properties never care for their yard, let weeds grow, looks a mess. I asked him how would he like it if he had these type of houses near him, yes mam, I wouldn't like it either. I think he was upset that I actually called him at first. How did I get his phone #. I told him it was public record and look his name up in the phone directory.

"The home is still listed with the agency but with another agent after I called her manager and had her taken off the listing due to her unprofessional behavior." Seems odd that the agency hasn't 'talked' to this agent to ask her why she is trying so hard to sabatoge this deal. What does the present agent think of this? linda117-"You could also call the police and tell them there are two cars parked on your property that arent supposed to be there. Let them go an knock on her door, Im sure she'll move them in a hurry." Good idea. I wouldn't want to have to waste the time and money getting a certified letter either. linda117 is right. I'd ask the police to stick around when the tow truck arrives as well.

Yes of course my questions are open to all for discussion. Seems my neighbors moving out but over a long period of time because it’s been a couple months and they take a load sporadically. I’ve just stayed indoors so it wouldn’t look rude that I didn’t offer.

Thanks Zebra Lover for including rain requests for us. I can't even keep the water level in my pool high enough for the cleaner to work. The wind has been so bad that the evaporation out of the plants, ground and pool is so high. My poor plant containers need watering daily and could use it twice a day, if I could afford it.

I really think that affects the amount of nectar in the plants and therefore the butterflies aren't being attracted. I see singles of Polys and Monarchs but no Zebra Longwings, not even Gulf Frits. Been a very slow start to the season.

Only hope it gets better.

You are welcome Mary. My plants have suffered some wind burn as a result of the high winds. I believe the winds and lack of rain definitely affect the nectar production. I just think that the number of bfs will increase once we get rain. I have a few Monarchs, Frits, sulphurs and cassius blues in my yard every day bit that is about it. Did have a giant swallowtail the other day, but the Monarchs are so aggressive and ran it off. Hand watering every day using the water from the retention pond. Not fun. I would love to come out this summer and check out your garden. Thanks for the Aris. seeds. Haven't planted any yet but will soon.

I'm the neighbor and I moved to Washington IN. (smiling) Thanks for the suggestions. We got sooooo much rain I'm willing to disperse it among any who need it.
