Solstice is almost here

Only 11 days and counting. Do you know what you will be sowing? So far I have only decided on 2 seeds. I will sow another crab apple tree for LIFE because I see how much the birds love them, especially the Cardinals and the Mockingbird.

Last weekend when the snow hit, a small flock of Cedar Waxwings surprised me by showing up at my tree which still has a nice amount of apples on it. I had never seen them here before, and since the tree is located just outside the office window, it was quite a thrill to see such beautiful birds gorging themselves on little red apples. Now I am planning to sow a tree that has yellow apples that are just a little bit larger than the red ones. I seem to have really good luck with apple tree seeds.

My other seed choice is Leonotis for a LEAP OF FAITH. I guess I'll have to go through my stash to decide on REMEMBRANCE, and I forgot what the 4th one is, have to look that one up.

Nice idea for a thread Mary. Remembrance, Life, Mother Nature, Faith. I'm sowing dogwoods for remembrance, black-eyed Susans for life, Echinacea for Mother Nature and something for Faith. Haven't decided on which will fit that one yet. It's so amazing to find myself looking forward to the winter from a seed's perspective! Rather than dreading the cold and bitter winds, the ice, snow and freezing rain, deep down the seeds know they need those harsh conditions in order to fulfill their destiny and become new plants. Guess I'm grateful to be part of that.

At this elevation I have similar weather to Detroit MI micro-climate and the Wilmington DE climate I moved here from. Climate Zone information is for flatlanders; elevation changes temps. East of the mountains is Zone 7 Finishing this warm wet spell this weekend, +3 inches rain total fell overall this week. Worked in the yard yesterday pruning shrubs and trees -only noticed plant changes were the new surface root growth on the large hosta clumps, which signals movement for Spring. Most old hosta clumps will push out a few big surly root tips on the surface, which keep the clump from sinking overwinter. They lay down and embed in the soil in the Spring. Bruce

The seedling pictured will get 2 more years to prove itself. I am especially on the lookout for fancy lates. This one looks a lot like Last Man Standing. I was hoping for a more pronounced edge.

Fun2B - thanks, you're correct and I was wrong. I've just looked at the most recent bills for my two properties and the mechanics of how it's presented seems to have changed somewhere along the line. Maybe not recently, because since forever I look at the total and never at any of the details. What they're now calling "assessed value" is the value that the tax rate is applied to. It's not fair market value except in a year of acquisition because of the Prop 13 2% per year increase ceiling when there's no change of ownership, just as you said. Thank you Howard Jarvis. Ta-da, I did some scrounging around to try to see if I was imagining things or if there was some basis for my false info, On site of the Office of the Assessor, County of Santa Clara, a page presenting "Dictionary of Terms", I thankfully found this: "Assessed Value The taxable value of a property against which the tax rate is applied. Since 1981-82, the assessed value is 100% of the property's value pursuant to the provisions of the Revenue and Taxation Code. In prior years, the assessed value was 25% of the full cash value." I bought my first house and began my career as a tax advisor in the early-mid 1970s. As career advancement also involved putting distance between what I needed to know to do my role at a higher level and the nitty gritty details of earlier years, the details changed when I was past the point of needing to known them. It was an arbitrary practice all the same. When assessed value was one-quarter of FMV, the rate was four times higher. I guess I have to change my tree seeds from Life to Mother Nature and choose some others.

I was digging about in the seed box today instead of getting the lights up on the tree. I am so distracted by what I want to grow, and the seed catalogs are no help here either. I wonder if I will get any baking done for the holidays. I'm sure it won't be anywhere near what I would like to do.
I'm going to pour me a glass of eggnog with a shot of Amaretta and keep warm as the temps here. Tomorrow is soon enough to decorate the tree.

I've also been lulled by the unexpected warm weather up 'til now but the snow, cold and wind sure make it look and feel as though Old Man Winter finally woke up and realized he'd been sleeping on the job. It's weird looking out on my beds and seeing a blanket of white covering them. No more walking through them every afternoon mulling over plans in my head for what I'll add next year. There are still green things growing indoors in front of my south-facing window: daylilies, foxglove, hosta and false indigo. Guess it's time to tip over the bird bath before it cracks.

My nature seed is Tree Peony, my leap of faith will be Himalayan Blue Poppies. I have not yet decided on the other 2.

Haven't decided on my ritual seeds yet, but will soon - in addition to them, I will sow as many of mine that need multiple cold-warm cycles as possible - we don't get much cold time in AL

It's taken awhile to put together a decent set, but here goes:
Remembrance - Nicotiana - both my mom & aunt died from problems caused by smoking
Life - Echinacea
Mother Nature - apple seeds
Faith - half-hardy hibiscus/zone 6

I decided on daylily for my "faith" container. Both my mother and brother loved daylilies. I lost both of them to lung cancer within a year of each other so nicotiana isn't one of my favorite flowers. Daylilies are mainstays in the garden that provide interest and color long after the iris and peonies are done and to my mind they're a fitting tribute. There were more than 25 clumps of them growing here when I moved back into the old family home and I've planted that many more since.
