Moving them all out question.

I have been overwintering all my Brugs in my Basement.I let them go dormant but lately they have been sending up pale green shoots,which I have been removing.

I would like to move all of them to a large unheated Garden Shed.Our temps have been rising but the overnights are still in the - 10-15 range.Will this be too cold for my Brugs? They are all in medium to large Pots.I can probably put a little heater into the Shed but it would not be all that warm in there.

My answer would be YES it is to cold.

Just wait till a long time brug grower gives you the correct answer.

I agree too with lucy.. Coming from a climate like yours.. Keep them inside and remove the leaves. Not top ones! This keeps the bugs down for you. Excellant question.. I am still a newb only growing for two years only. If I am wrong pop in senoir members... (sheepish grin I think I am right, I hope they agree) Barb

I fully understand. Been there, done that in 2001. They weren't winter sown plants, but then again I discovered wsing that winter and have never looked back. Just a little pointer that may help a lot. Plants which are transplanted at this time of year in our zone are likely to suffer a bit of heaving in the winter. When transplanting them, add water as you add the soil to try and remove air pockets where the water may sit in and freeze around the roots. Make them as snug as a bug around the root ball and then mulch a bit. It will go a long way to making sure they get through. :O)

I think you may have misunderstood what the previous owner was telling you. You shouldn't throw out the plant that has bloomed, but instead, as this part of the plant develops pups,(offshoots from the base), the part that flowered will usually go into a slow decline, and after 2 or 3 years this part with the old flower can be cut off, and the now larger pups will fill in to take its place. If you do decide to dig up the old plant and divide/separate the pups, wait until they are at least 1/3 to 1/2(better) the size of the mother, to replant as new plants.

Yes, the mom has paid support, not on time or in full most times but after they attached last years income tax, we are now up to date. It is a small amount, we pay for health insurance. She is responsible for very little. We had custody of the 3 children, 1 is moved out on her own, she is in her 20's, the other is going to college here but will transfer to the new state. So, the last one is the youngest minor. SD has not said alot about the move, it has been a well kept secret. She did say that she wants to experience life and see different places. SD is very well adjusted, well liked at school and a top honor student. But she is close to her mom and I would imagine that she feels very very torn about this. I would like DH to talk to her when it actually becomes a reality and tell her that 2 years will fly by and she can apply to colleges there. this may sound petty, but I hope their house doesn't sell before the fall so SD will not have to make a decision. She has made it very clear to us that if this does not happen in the next 5 months and the move happens during the summer, she will not move if she starts her junior year, she will finish her jr and sr year here. That would pretty much solve this whole mess. Bio's DH will not make more money, he will be closing the doors to his business and I guess find a job/business to go to. Bio mom will work 20 hrs a week I assume and attend this program. She has attended 3 schools in 5 years and has not gotten very far, she flunks many of her classes so I have no hopes that she will actually complete this process. I don't know, I am a rambling kind of mood today. I think this is a selfish decision to make at this point. This education could be attained here and she could wait until her youngest is 18 and go where ever she pleases, she is causing a tremendous amount of unhevel and there is no home, job, family she is going to... just the acceptance into a community college? Who does that? And don't drag your kids along, wait until you are settled yourself. Who is going to support them and my SD? Our child support? Beginning to look that way. We will subpeona her payroll records if this actually happens and our arguement will be that she is leaving a good paying job, so we should not have to pay more because of that.

In regard to the temperature questions: I haven't put a thermometer in there yet, but based on touch it feels like it's in the upper 50's, mid to lower 60's most of the time. That being said, my orchids aren't particularly upset with the temperature, in fact I've got about nine spikes on the phals. Anything is better than the low 40 degree weather we've had outside in the past month! Hopefully the room won't cool down much further as we move into December and January. I do go up there and commune with my lovely plants, but I am 5'9" and the ceiling slopes lower than my head for most of the room! Hahaha. I do enjoy the room though, thank you. It certainly serves as my "She-Shed." Jsetla, I would worry about putting dry heat lamps near any plants, especially if you get discoloration. You want a nice wet heat, high humidity. I spray exposed root systems and my vanilla almost every day, which helps add some humidity. Maybe if you held the lamp several feet away?

It is normal for them to send up those pale green or white shoots. Just leave them, those night temps are too cold. Wait until the temps are above freezing to put them in your shed. That shed will be good for them when the temps are above freezing but there is still a frost danger.

**If** you can keep your shed heated to 10C, then you can put them into it Thistle. I keep mine in an independent shed/greenhouse that is kept all 10C all winter and pray every year that we don't lose power to it. Try a few nights with the heater going but no plants in it and see if you can maintain the temp first though. I am not sure you will gain much by doing this before the end of March here though. I wait til then to send mine on their way.

I would leave them where they are until the nights are above 40. Why move them twice and you know they are safe now?

have very long to wait now :)

If you only have a few (& don't mind the exercise), move them in & outside as the weather lets you. All the greens that you pinch off will grow back when the real warm weather gets here. I wouldn't move to your shed unless you know you can keep the temps up. When is your frost date?

I think in my heart I knew what the answer to my question would be,so I guess I will wait a little bit.Thanks to all you good people for replying.
The reason I am in a hurry is that my entire laundry room and some of the utility room is full of pots I can hardly move and DH is getting fed up with them being there (too bad! I say about that. lol)
I could probably get the temperature up in my shed, but the Hydro bill would probably not warrent it,so
in the Laundry room they will stay,probably won't be for much longer anyway.

Yyyyyyyyep. Welcome to brug addictions. Ha!

Rule of thumb I read, move them out when the nite time temp does not drop below your storage temp. Now THAT seems like a waste to me, because if you're storing them at 50, I'm not gonna wait until 50 degree nites.

I personally move them out AFTER last danger of frost (and even then, I take a big risk because a frost wont' necessarily kill the whole plant, just the tender tops.)

But then again, I'm in Illinois, and EVERYTHING is so short here. LAST year stunk, we had cold damp yuck weather way down into May. And by May the year before, I had blooms.

I'm hopign for a wonderful early warm spring this year, jump start EVERYTHING.

I'm going to be a rototilling MAMA. none of the yard is going to be safe from me! Turn the whole yard into a DIRT pile. (grin)
