Bottom watering pots & busy days!

Has anyone tried them? I was wondering if they would be good to use for the ones in the house. They have a little spout at the bottom that you pour the water in and the plant takes it up as needed supposedly. I am still combating those dang fungus gnats. I let some of them dry out so bad they were wilting and still the dang things are around them. I used the peat perlite mix this time and added some slow release fertilizer. It is really beautiful out today. I still didn't get everything done that I wanted to do but the stupid fibromyalgia doesn't seem to realize what a perfect day it is. I gave the bird a bath and let him sit outside in the sunshine after I washed his cage. He is really enjoying that. I potted up 6 brugs into larger pots and redid the 2 desert rose. When you raise them up to expose the caudex is it ok if a couple of roots are exposed or is that too high? I left room to add more potting mix if needed. All my roses are growing new sprouts and bulbs are coming up. They don't realize we are going to have another cold spell for sure. I watered all the outside plants but didn't get to do any digging or moving that I needed to do. I want to get some trees pruned up too so I get more sun in the front yard. I also ordered about10 different plants from the guy on ebay that Karyn told me about. He has great prices on shipping. Got a snowbanks and the rest are hummingbird and butterfly plants. He has good prices and some unusual plants. There is nothing good at most of the nurseries here. When I get my other beds done I will be ordering more from him. Does anyone have the candy corn vine? I didn't see it til I had already placed my order. Oh well maybe next time. I was supposed to make a list of my plants today that still look good but just didn't have the energy or the heart. Most of the ones that look like they croaked have orange tape which means I payed a lot for them so I hate to look. I am hoping some will sprout from the sides. I still have some in the windowsill in glasses of water. They are doing so well I hate to disturb them, lol. The Hawaiian Doulbe White is so nice and leafed out I swear the thing could probably bloom in that glass if I added some fertilizer. Dang I don't write this much in a letter. Sorry to ramble I'm bored but too tired to get up and do anything. I guess I better think about supper. I'll be back on in a bit. I hope you all as nice a day as I did. Ron is one of my favorite Ebay sellers. His plants are always healthy and a decent size for the price. I got my Miner's Claim from him and only paid about $10. My Candy Corn vine (Manettia inflata), from Ron also, froze in the GH last month. I cut it back but don't know if it will return from the roots or not. I'm at a swim meet in Delaware this weekend but found out that Pepper's Greenhouse is very close to the hotel so I'm going tomorrow. They have Candy Corn vines on their site and I will get another if they have them in stock. I've never tried taking cuttings but will be happy to send you a piece when it warms up. I can't wait to go to Pepper's. I've ordered from their online catalog but have never been to their greenhouse. I'm glad we don't have much luggage in the car! lol

I should have just ordered it. I could have gotten it for $4.95. He has a couple other things that will be available soon and he said he would have more later so I will get it then. He's a nice guy to deal with. If I don't get one I'll let you know. I am excited for you to get to go to a good nursery, lol. They have terrible ones here. Have a good weekend!

I take a gallon can from food, punch some holes in the bottom with a nail, put the lid I removed to open the can over the holes, then fill a plastic bag with water and put it in the can. I have never found a plastic bag that would not leak, but if you do, poke a hole or 2 near the bottom of the bag with a pin so it will leak slowly. If your plants are in large pots like mine are (cut-off plastic barrels, usually), there is room to put one of these in the barrel. It will water your plants for almost a week if the pinholes really are pinholes.. If you want to decrease the amount of water your plants will need, such as during really hot weather, make some kind of simple shade over them before you put the self-waterers to work.

A black plastic nursery can remains MUCH cooler than a terra cotta or ceramic pot. The plastic is far less dense, absorbs much less heat, transmits much less of it to the interior of the pot to the roots and holds and radiates significantly less heat after the heat source is removed from it (direct sun, hot air, etc.) Even in cool air (60 - 65 degrees F) two blocks from the surf in Pacific Palisades, I could take people into the area and have them reach inside black plastic cans then into ceramic and terra cotta pots and feel the difference. Move inland where the temperatures increase often by 50 degrees and the sun is tremendously more intense (no fog filter, much less humidity) and the effects go up geometrically. You can buy terra cotta cooking ware. Corning makes ceramic cookware. Long after the sun moves from shining directly on the pot, plastic releases that heat. Ceramic and terra cotta hold it for a long time, radiating it into both the soil ball and air. Don't believe it? Set those types of pots outside in the sun and check it for yourself. Terra cotta pots dry out much faster than black plastic nursery cans, not only because they're porous but also because they get hotter and remain hotter, longer. When I worked at the coast, the trick for getting sweet tomatoes, strawberries, oranges and grapefruit was to plant them in terra cotta pots in the full sun. The increased heat from those pots triggered the plants to form the sugars which produced the flavors. In plastic, fiberglass or in the ground, the fruit was bland. Sugar formation requires heat. Terra cotta and ceramic pots in cooler environments supply it better than anything. In hotter ones, they'll cook the devil out of a plant in very short order. I can't use anything smaller than a 22" clay pot here in Encino. With our sun and heat, anything smaller is toast in a day. I've grown many roses in black plastic nursery cans for a decade and longer. Not just used that kind of pot that long, actually kept the same rose in the plastic can ten and more years. I managed to get quite a bit done today --- not tooooo hot. I planted a new Meyer Lemon; I figure it can survive anything after sitting in the full HOT sun in a large plastic pot all summer at the nursery. I cleaned up my gardening bench this afternoon --- left for 10 days and the roof rat took over again.... what a mess. Then there is the cute little black mouse in a white apron that took over the kitchen while I was gone This required a tremendous amount of cleaning on my part the morning after my return. ugh, I feel your pain. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia when I was fifteen.

was compounded this last spring by two car accidents in the same week, one of which involved a cement truck, while the other totaled my friend's car. whiplash injuries + FM = ria is bedridden for days at a time, sometimes.

but the sun still rises every morning, and friends (and even my little brugs!) brighten up every day :)

hope you feel better, sounds like you had a fun day anyway :)

I did. I should have stayed home from work this week when I saw how bad it was getting so I just did a little at a time and layed down in between. It will go away again sooner or later. It was good for several months then flared up again. Talk to you later.

I'm sorry guys. I know how pain can seriously damage the ability to do anything.

I hope you guys both feel better soon.

Karyn - that is so great that you're getting to go visit a nursery close to your hotel.

Our nurseries seem to carry just the usual suspects. Ever greens, hostas, some of the regular ornamentals, little oak trees, etc.

Wish there was a "funky" place near by to see some terrific plants.

Hey f4f, I have used those pots. In my kitchen window with small indoor plants in them & the long outdoor planters on my porch railing. They work well for me, I like them. The plants roots grow out the bottom holes & down into the bottom searching for water. They don't sit in it so they don't rot.

I thought about something like sitting a large potted brug with holes drilled in the bottom on top of a 5 gallon bucket of water & fertilizer. Keep the bucket filled, let it's roots grow & it can take what it wants. If that doesn't make it happy, nothing will. LOL

Thanks guys. He said if he didn't have a sudden run on them he should have more in a few weeks. It was only $4.95 I don't know why I didn't just order it with my other stuff. I didn't see it until my order was paid but I'm sure I could have added it.
