I haven't found any on my asters I've had for a couple years now. But, the butterflies love the nectar. Especially the hairstreaks, crescents, Bordered Patches.

A good native Florida aster would be Aster carolinianus, which grows in Florida. It is a vine and is becoming more common in the trade now. It is hardy to our zone, and my neighbor grows it on his fence. It is gorgeous!

I've found that most of the asters you buy at garden centers are not true asters. I believe that some, likw the New York Aster you can get at Lowes, are true asters though.
Almost every host plant list I have seen has said that Pearly Crescent's host plants are Aster sp. Even the reputable books say that(Butterflies Through Binoculars). So I would immagine that it is true.
I personally have not had any on my native asters. I have only had mine for a year.

Mary, I haven't found any PC cats on the native asters that grow in the weedy areas by the main road and along my road/driveway. I have seen PCs, as well as other small butterflies, nectaring on asters, though, both the white and the purple types - here's a picture I took of a very dark PC nectaring on a spent white aster a few years ago -

I planted a carolina aster along my picket fence this spring, and it's growing rapidly - I thought the PCs might be more likely to lay eggs on the broader leaves of this native aster than the narrow leaves of the natives that grow here.

I have a rooting started from the Climbing Aster. It was from the Plant Seminar I went to at Bok Tower in Feb. However it isn't doing very well, it looks like it might not make it. If yours does well, maybe I could trade you for a cutting of it later on, Miss Sherry,HeHe.

By the way, I've planted my new passionvines, 'Incense' and 'Lady Margaret' in a raised bed beside my picket fence. The 'Incense' is growing real fast, but the 'Lady Margaret' is just poking along, growing, but not very fast. Has 'Lady Margaret' been less vigorous for you than your other passionvines?

I don't have Lady Margaret, I have Amethyst. I was amazed how fast it and my Careula grew last year. Plus neither one of them got bit from frost this winter so both, but especially the Amethyst has been blooming like crazy. Last week, I counted over 30 blooms all at once that were just sitting at the top of the fence.

You are welcome to anything I got! However, I don't know that there is anything you don't already have! I guess Katrina was kinda like a terrible blessing in that it opened up areas for new plants for you!

You got that right, Mary! I've got variety in plants now like never before!
Now that I think about it you just said that Lady Margaret was okay for GFs, not that you had any - you did say that, didn't you?
I'd absolutely LOVE to have some PC cats to raise! They lay their eggs in enormous groups, so if you have 'em, you really have 'em!

There had been a big discussion about which "red" passionvine was okay for the GFs on the Florida Forum. Someone responded with info from a "reliable source" that Lady Margaret was ok to use.

I have found several GF on my Incarnata already this season. Usually they use my Suberosa but since my vine came up IN THE SUN this year instead of the SHADE, urgh.... like I wanted it too, they seem to like it better. I still haven't seen any ZLWs anyway yet. It sure has been a slow year for the butterflies. We so desperatley need rain. It is scary. I don't recall having so few butterflies by this time of year. My Polydamas would at least keep me smiling along with the Sulphurs and GFs. I am lucky now if I see one or two a day now.
