Hum. . . .I only recently potted my bulbs from Royal Colors, so we shall have to wait and see and keep our fingers crossed!
I am still seeing that it is best to deal with the bulb specialist more so than "general merchandise nurseries" or the box stores. At least when they have a problem come up they only have to go directly to their supplier and not through a broker or other middleman to get final resolution. Plus, they pass the savings on to us and ship large healthy bulbs or at least quality blooming size bulbs when dealing with the lower grades of bulbs. I mean, really, do we have to have "Grade A" bulbs all the time? I would rather have the younger bulb which often turn out to be healthier and quicker to respond to favorable culture.

I had wanted to avoid discussion here, but replacements are even possible from the box kits, I have found.

I know how you feel, Xuan. I ordered Candy Floss from them but received something else. I did contact them and they offered a replacement bulb but that also was not Candy Floss. The bulbs also had stagonospora curtisii, and it spread to my other amaryllis in the vicinity. I've been trying to fight it back with my fungicide and am hoping it'll be fully eradicated by next spring.

I came across another Nursery owner last week that commented on how hard it is to find reliable help, and keep them when he does. Mislabeling plants is a common problem and the owners know it. Another problem is people who casually pull a tag to see what a plant is and them put it in the wrong pot, along with kids who are left unsupervised in an adult environment and collect tags. The customers tag abuse was told me by yet another owner. Can you imagine the amount of labor required to monitor tags in a retail operation with a thousand hostas and other plants? It seems the "BUYER BEWARE" caution is so very much intact and we have to try to keep up with our knowledge of hostas. THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS THIS FORUM IS SO GREAT ABOUT - so many members are willing to share. Thanks, Les

    This is a re-post:

    ORDERED: Honeymoon
RECEIVED: Orange/Red one possibly Golden Medal
    SOURCE: flower_girlnflorida(Ebay)/Amaryllis Bulb Company

    ORDERED: Santos
    RECEIVED: Santa Cruz
    SOURCE: Easy to Grow Bulbs

    ORDERED: Grandeur
    RECEIVED: Lima-ish variety
    SOURCE: Easy to Grow Bulbs

I have a lot of newly purchased bulbs with scapes out. Hope they won't make it to this list. It would be very interesting to see who the "TOP 5 or 10" of the "MOST HIPPIE BULB BOO-BOOS COMPANIES" of 2009. Hopefully this list would make them reconsider their suppliers or how they run their business and STOP pinpointing the blame to others. It really is getting old and getting WORST!!!

    Hey rebecca47 -

Regarding La Paz and Emerald, my experience was EXACTLY the same as you described. Except since I ordered them through Van Englen (JS' sister company) I now have 6 mis-labels instead of 2. The dark red (for La Paz) was drop-dead gorgeous and a keeper in my book. The other (for Emerald), I'm not the least bit thrilled about and I'll be asking for my money back.

I'd be interested to know how you determined the fault was with the Holland supplier. I'm guessing that was their excuse.

kabohem/Kristi was right - this is a useful recource. I recommend it become an annual thread!!!

We should collect the data and present an award (in the form of a new thread here and a direct e-mail to them) announcing the name of the bulb supplier with the worst record for mis-labels for 2009!!!

Absolutely!!! Sure do like your style.

And...it is going to continue to get worse until we start complaining. I will be writing letters to three suppliers regarding mislabeled bulbs from my 2009 order. I ordered 30 blubs in 2009 - 10 were mislabeled and not even close to what I ordered. I didn't buy a single bulb from Home Depot/Lowes/Walmart in 2009 because of my experience with mislabels from 2008.

33.3% WRONG ain't getting it. I don't care if they are pretty flowers. END RANT

Ordered - Amaryllis Papillio (Butterfly) - their description
Received - Exotic Star - no question about it
Supplier - Easy to Grow Bulbs.com

Their advertisement pictured what we all know as H. papillio. Three-bulb order, 100% wrong, to a first-time buyer. What a way to build your business.

    Ordered - La Paz
Received - very pretty dark red - a keeper
    Ordered - Emerald
Received - a nothing special flower, mostly white with red edge
    Supplier - Van Englen

Two 3-bulb orders. Six mislabels total from this outfit.

    Ordered - Bogata
Received - a dog of a flower, absolutely good for nothing except practicing bulb surgery or scaling/chipping. Even the "pretty flower" bunch wouldn't plant this one.
    Supplier - Amaryllis Bulb Company

Another 3-bulb order. Two out of three of the bulbs were what I ordered.

SA supplies bulbs to Walmart, I wouldn't contact them about the mislabels, I've talked to them last year about them. They supply 'Amigo' I think as their 'Red Lion', 'Amigo' is much prettier in my opinion and quality bulbs.

Saad Assaf also supplies ETGB many of their exclusives such as 'Ruby Star' and 'Opal Star'.

    WHAT YOU BUY: Black Pearl
    WHAT YOU GOT:???

  • SummerPerson

I looked at the Saad-Assaf Flower Bulb Nurseries
web site. It's interesting that Israel has the perfect climate to grow Amaryllis.

What are some of the other major places that supply Amaryllis bulbs? Are some or many of the Amaryllis bulbs sold here in the United States grown in the United States?

I only ordered one bulb this season.

    WHAT YOU ORDERED: Naughty Lady
WHAT YOU GOT: Looks like Santos
WHO DID YOU ORDER IT FROM: Amaryllis Bulb Company

I expected that I might get Santos after reading some posts that said other people got it instead of NL.

What I really wanted was Ludwig's 'Voodoo' which can be sold as NL with the full approval of the KAVB since Ludwig sold their rights to Voodoo (and their stocks) in the 1980s.

On the ABC site, the picture is the stock picture of Ludwig's 'Voodoo'.

  • raydio

The bulb is looking more like 'Piccolo' or 'Little Star'. I don't think it is 'Santos' primarily because the white stripe doesn't extend to the tip of the tepals.

Still, I have seen pix of this one posted as Naughty Lady, so it may be what is sent out under that name, but it isn't 'Voodoo' IMO.

    WHAT YOU ORDERED (wanted): Aphrodite
WHAT YOU GOT: I don't know
WHO DID YOU ORDER IT FROM: Box kit sold to benefit breast cancer--at least the bulb in it was pink! I thought it might be Aphrodite when the scape started to grow as it got leaves along with the scape which was something someone here mentioned as a trait of Aphrodite, but it was not to be. WHAT YOU ORDERED: Lagoon
WHAT YOU GOT: Pink with a white star
WHO DID YOU BUY IT FROM: Agway

Bought locally as a loose bulb, no box, tag held on with rubber band. I thought it might have been an in-store mix up and asked the staff if they had carried a variety with a white star. The woman who ordered the bulbs showed me the catalog they got the bulbs from. Nothing with that color pattern in the catalog. Based on online photos, I'm thinking it might be "Exposure."

I've bought a total of eight bulbs there in the past two years and this is the first mislabel.
