Happy Easter! I released 17 Monarchs today!

What a beautiful day, part of my first generation of monarchs for 2009 eclosed today! Mother Monarch arrived in the garden in early March; she was tattered and faded, and I watched as she deposited her eggs on the small tuffs of milkweed emerging after the late winter freeze took out my gorgeous blooming milkweeds plants. So desperate she was to finish this final act, she even deposited a few eggs on seedlings with four leaves. I don't know how so many cats managed to grow on so little food. Once the cats had eaten the milkweed to nubs, I gathered them all up and took them to the other side of the house were I had two potted milkweeds Mother Monarch had overlooked. Many I moved directly into my mesh cages. The two pots were moved into the garage and nylon netting draped over them. I must have at least 25 more yet to eclose. The chrysalises are hanging all over the nylon netting like earrings. What a day!
