WTG! Are you getting cold weather this week? Our forecast is to drop down to 25 degrees tonight. Won't be good for the BFs. I hope all the nectar and host plants don't get hit with the cold. Every time this happens, the BFs disappear for about a month and then return slowly. Spring is still struggling to make its appearance here. : (

We're headed down to the 30s tonight. April is squirrely like that. Our last frost date is May 15.

I saw a Mourning Cloak last week--it was on a day when the temps reached into the 60s! What a great sight it was!

Yesterday I saw a Mourning Cloak in the backyard here in Massachusetts. Very first butterfly of the year. Yippeee!! It was mostly sunny and relatively warm day (low 60s F).

No sign of butterflies yet, here in Madison, Wisconsin. We have had two weeks of cool weather, high 20's at night, followed by high 40's during the day. At least its been sunny! We have crocus blooming, and wild iris. Today, while walking along Lake Monona, I saw bees feeding in the yards with the most blooming flowers. Our milkweed has not emerged, so its just as well that the butterflies take their time on the journey north.

Around 1pm today, my wife saw a mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa), as she walked along Lake Monona, near Elmside Street. She had a digital camera along, and managed to get a good close up. There are many hackberry trees that grow along the lake in this area, and hackberry is a host plant for mourning cloaks. This area of the city is one of the first places to warm up in the spring, because it receives unobstructed sunlight. There aren't very many plants blooming here yet, but some of the yards have crocus and wild iris in bloom.

Saw my first Mourning Cloaks a couple of weeks ago; first Pipevines maybe a week gone; first PVS eggs yesterday, which is good because my Aristolochia californica is going berserk this year! :) More the merrier.

Cabbage whites have been out and about for quite a while here (Oroville, CA); saw what I think was a Red Admiral yesterday but I'd swear it had odd coloring....oh, and a skipper the other day.

Welcome to spring!

All I've seen here so far are whites and sulfurs, other than the Black Swallowtails I had pupating over the winter that just emerged. And they haven't moved from where I released them yet - still too cool here. I can't wait till it warms up!

Saw the first Cabbage white a couple of days ago. That is the 2nd sighting of a butterfly! Yes, Spring 'tis here. :)

I saw a copper fluttering around last week, and today while on my jog, I saw a beautiful blue butterfly--don't know if it was an Eastern-Tailed or Spring Azure, but it sure was a welcome sight.
