Soory to hear it didn't work out I was curious to see what your blooms would look like. Have you ever seen the blue, purple, or other oddly colored poinsettias at the stores around Christmas? It looks like they just use food coloring or something and paint it directly onto white flowers. It gives a water color or tye dyed effect, not solid, uniform color, but if nothing else works you could try that to get colored dats or any flower really. Let us know what the stem injections turn out like in the summer, good luck!

Thanks Pagrdnr..No, I haven't seen any poinsettias like that before, that sounds cool though. I've only ever seen the typical red and white.
I can't see myself sitting there painting flower petals, lol. Hopefully the injections will work well. Will def keep you all updated on the injection experiment, and if all goes well, I will have pics. :)
I'm tempted to go to HD and get a blooming plant of any kind just to inject it, lol. I'm itchin for spring so bad..but aren't we all!?

Daneilla, it's kinda scary reading this.... If you think about it, it seems that probably a large percentage of the food we eat is dyed.. And so the plants that you watered with food coloring died and one's you didn't are fine? I would have never expected food coloring to kill a plant...

wildflower, a HUGE percentage of food is unnecessarily dyed and a vastly larger percentage of prepackaged food is made up of so many synthetic substances that very little of what we eat anymore should even be considered food at all! it's really sort of shameful.

best thing you can do is cook it yourself with organic and responsibly farmed produce and meats. that's the only way you'll ever know what's REALLY going into what you eat...

Too many of our foods are dyed unnecessarily. Nothing is "good" for you anymore unless you grow it yourself or buy organic. And to think how much food coloring I have used in baking over the years..all the desserts & cakes that I have decorated with so many dif colors. Oh well, it won't stop me, lol.

The only other sprouts that bit the dust were my hibs, ALL my hibs..but I think that was my fault because I moved them into bigger containers too soon, but I needed the room. I'm so upset I don't have any hibs left. They were the only ones I started in a styrofoam egg container..I knew it wouldn't be deep enough but I was itchin too bad to get them started, and it was all I had that day. Could kick myself for that one.

I am wondering if maybe next time I will try natural dyes..beet juice, etc, to inject the stems.

It is scary about coloring in food. I'm reminded of that comedian - "there is nothing on the face of this planet that is naturally blue except the stuff in the back of my refridgerator!"

Sorry to hear they died Daniella. Beet juice would be pretty kewel to try. Wonder if it has an acid or anything that would harm them.

I've never heard of watering rooted plants with food coloring to change leaf color, but we used to put cut flowers in a vase with food coloring and the flowers would change color. On some, you could even see the coloring as it traveled up the veins towards the bloom.

Without too much info. All plants change color based on their soil and minerals contained within. Too much of anything in 1 dose will kill. The old celery in the glass of dye water. Try it in a mister bottle and some in the soil.

Jim, Oh no way am I gonna put food coloring in a mister, lmao..or any kind of natural dye. I have 3 kids, lmao.
I know what you mean though, like hydrangeas and how you can change their color of their blooms by how acidic the soil is.

El, I didn't want to change leaf color, was just experimenting to see if the flowers would be colored, if from seed the plant was watered with that color.

Annette, I didn't think of the acid factor..hmmm..I do wonder how acidic beet juice is?

I think this was a waste of an experiment from the beginning.
Still gonna try the stem injections.
