Do people use food coloring to change the color or the water?

I have a fountain and want to change the water color to a bluish green. Can I add food coloring to the water or should I use another product?

Hey Feegle! :-)) I find that adding vinegar (in doses as described in my previous message) makes for more vibrant colours - including deeper purples and more intense reds (if there is such a thing!). I do grow under lights which also makes a difference to the intensity of the colours. I guess what you do depends on whether your conditions are more alkaline or acidic. For my potting mixture I use Schultz's Moisture Plus potting soil, vermiculite, and sponge rock (not perlite)in more or less 1/3 each combinations - perhaps a bit less soil. I guess - I was not made to measure! LOL! I also add some charcoal to sweeten the mix. My guess is my mixture is probably quite neutral. I grow a lot of my AV's in Oyama planters and now I've started to use Dandy pots (which means wicking) for some of my semi's and mini's so my potting mixture has to be quite light. So far so good! Once again, this is stuff that I do. I can't promise that it will work for everyone. I like trying different things. Right now I have Chantaspring and Optimara's Little Crystal wicked in little teapots. The holders that they're planted in are only about 3/4" high and about 1 1/2" across. I'm thinking of putting Always Pink in one as well. Enough rambling from me - it's cold, windy and miserable out, so that's my excuse! Joan

This is a huge opportunity for farming all over the country. Like someone else said, fruit and vegetable growing is shifting back east. There are however, things we won't be able to grow in New Jersey or Kansas such as avocadoes and pistaschios. This doesn't mean the collapse of California's huge agrobusiness and I wouldn't want to see that. But, here's a chance for farmers in states like mine (Kansas) to grow fruit and vegetables that traditionally have not been grown here because of the tradition of growing grain crops and meat animals. In a lot of states, this is going to be a challenge to break up the old models of agriculture and that will need to start with pressure on the Land Grant Universities to be more proactive in helping farmers diversify their crops. Getting people to think outside of the box is the hardest part, but it can, and will be done as farmers realize the potential markets that are out there. There will always be the army of experts and spin doctors that will come up with all kinds of reasons not to think this through, but that's with any kind of change.

Why You Really Shouldn't Use Red Coloring or Commercial "Nectar Mixes": It has not been proven-beyond-any-doubt that the red dye is harmful to hummingbirds but since it is unnecessary to use dye if your hummingbird feeder already has some red on it, why take the chance that red dye might be bad for the birds in the long run? Natural flower nectar isn't colored, so why put something in your sugar solution that the real thing doesn't have? As for those nectar mixes, not only are they quite a bit more expensive than ordinary white table sugar, wild hummingbirds do not need the "added vitamins and minerals". Flower nectar is, for the most part, pretty much just sugar (sucrose) water. Hummingbirds in the wild get the vital nutrients they need mainly through the insects they eat--which some scientists say could be as much as half their diet. (A hummingbird that appears to be nectaring at any particular flower may instead really be hunting the insects that are attracted to the flower.) Many hummingbird researches feel that nectar is in actuality just the fuel these birds use to power their search for bugs. Feeder and Feeding Facts ALG and GARDEN WEB. IMO dyes look bad unless black. There is a black dye called Deep Water sold by Lilypons (on-line).

IMO the blue dye they sell for ponds (I think it is called Shade) looks like airplane toilet water!

Maybe consider colored lights for your fountain if you want something colorful that you can change the lens cover if you don't like one shade over another or want to have variety.

But, if you want to know how to make blue-green. Blue is a primary color and green is a secondary color made from varying amounts of blue and yellow depending on the shade you are seeking. I would start with yellow dye and add blue until you get a green you like.

Food coloring won't hurt fish IMO but it will stain like the dickens everything it touches.

Off subject a little, but everytime I read about people adding colorant to water, I think of the time I decided to add some Mrs. Smith's Liquid Blueing to the kids' stocktank/pool. It said it was safe to use in bird baths and swimming pools and it DID make the water an inviting cool blue color. However, my DD, who was already a bleached blonde that summer from exposure to sun and chlorine, jumped in and came out with... kelly green hair! :-O

Hmmm.....wonder what would happen to my yellow butterfly koi.... lol

When used as directed, black and blue pond coloring won't stain.

Most people use way more than directed though.....

I use black in my greenhouse pond.
