Welcome to the world of Hippeastrum bulbs, more commonly known as Amaryllis! You're not doing anything wrong... that's exactly how Hippeastrum bulbs grow. I suspect you have the variety Red Lion, which is a fairly common one. These bulbs grow one flower scape, or stalk, at a time... and can have 3 consecutive scapes, although 2 is more common. Once the flowers fade, leaves will begin to emerge and grow. At this point, the plant needs as much light as you can give it. A southern window is best, though an eastern or western exposure will do. Once the weather stays warm outside, and there's no danger of frost, you can place your bulb outdoors so it can grow and get a decent amount of natural light. You'll want to feed your bulb once it begins to grow leaves... any houseplant fertilizer will work... I mix a weak solution, about half the recommended strength, and I water with that about every other watering. A word of caution on watering... Hippeastrum bulbs can be prone to rot issues, so you'll want to allow the soil to dry in between waterings. You don't have to store the bulb as you'd think of storing Canna rhizomes or Glad corms... you can actually treat the bulb as a regular houseplant, and if cared for properly, it will bloom by its own schedule, which is normally in the spring or early summer. If you prefer the blooms to be at Christmas, you'll need to force your bulb into a dormancy. It will require good care all spring and summer to help it recharge for its next bloom cycle... around the middle of of August, I believe it is, you'll need to stop watering your bulb, and place it in a dark, cool place to rest... a basement works well... the bulb will lose its leaves and go dormant... about 8 weeks or so into its dormancy, it will begin to sprout a flower scape... once you see this, you'll want to bring the pot back into a warm, bright room and resume watering. Your bulb should bloom in about 6-8 weeks. I, myself, prefer to allow nature to take its course... I treat all of my Hippeastrum bulbs as houseplants, and they reward my care by flowering every spring! Good luck!

I would never cut green leaves during the growing season. I remove them IF they yellow in the fall, otherwise I leave them green all year long. If forcing a dormancy for a certain time period, you might cut them while green, but since you've already cut yours earlier, let it grow, and give your plant as much light as possible, along with water and fert to help. You may not get a flower next year, but give it at least another season before giving up on it. Good growing to you! Ray

The red specimen shouild be a species Hippeastrum of the kind H.equestre/puniceum or H.rutilum. Cannot specify more concisely instantly but, interestingly, these are in their majority TETraploid and they should produce seeds after SELF-pollination. The white, tubular one looks like a rather original (heirloom) hybrid, out of the real H.vittatum. Beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
