Butterfly has been a bit tricky for me, too---don't feel bad. Some brugs just root better in soil.

I think we've all BTDT and can sympathize. I lost about 20 rooted cuttings earlier this week. I'm still trying to figure out what varieties are gone.

Some of the pink colored brugs definitely seem to root better in soil for me. Next time try putting them in water with some superthrive in a bright, warm spot only until you see the beginning of white nubbies. Then take them out and plant in soil, water and keep moist but not soggy. I put them in very well drained soil at first like 1/3 perlite to potting soil ratio in a small pot with holes in the bottom. Don't leave a saucer with water under it. Place in a bright window if it is too cool outside yet. Bottom heat will also help it root.

So very sorry to hear of your losing so many cuttings, Karyn. Odd how some seem to be doing well and then poof! I think I will try your advice SJN, and as soon as the weather warms up here, I will pot-up the cuttings with the nubbies (but no roots)
Our afternoon temp today was 80F but our nites are still in the 40's. However, I put all the large pots of Brugs out today (against a sheltering wall) because they were just not able to get enough lite in the house. So maybe by next weekend I can start potting plants. I'm beginning to think that this Brug addiction is like running a nursery school for little ones ... lol. Why do we luv these plants so much? Again, thanks to you all for helping me out. Gloria

Cuttings are I believe going to grow or not. I had close to 100% with my 1st and 2nd batch and then 50% survival on the third.( nursery stock you had some of these) A good cutting will root almost on its own. I have tried all types of variations and it seems. Some will grow and some will not. Yours might have been semi dormant.

The slow to start are slow to grow. Sometimes it is better to loose them young than spend a year tying to grow a slow performing plant. I have tried my hand at rooting a bunch of other things also and it is the same way. Some jump out and others straggle. I have accepted this as a fact of life.

Give me a holler later in the year and I will have some butterfly for you. Spring is almost here.

Karen..I have quite a few rooted cuttings in soil also...I'm thinking that I better take a second look. Do you know why/how you lost them?

Thanks for the Butterfly offer, Jim. I just might take you up on that. Those "nursery" cuttings you sent ... in fact All the cuttings from you are greened stemmed with lots of roots and leaf sprouts. Even the little one you had potted is sprouting. If they continue to flourish, you will probably be getting some cuttings back from them. The Maypops are still dormant, but looking alive. You have to try to kill those maypops. Even then it may not work. Glad to hear the nursery plants are doing good. I have my 100 plants and am going to see what they do. All the poor performers will go elsewhere. I might have a bunch of plants that will do good where you live. I was reading what grows good on the west coast does not grow well here and vice versa.

Glad to see you have spring feaver. It is hitting the 70's again and things are waking up here. Brungs grew about a foot in a week. Hope it does not freeze again.

Will not need any cuttings unless a hurricane blows through here but will have plenty to send. 100 plants is almost more than a person should have.

Never enuff Money; Hot fudge; or Brugs!!! Double WOW!... growth a foot in a week?!! My cuttings are staying alive and some sprouting leaves, but none are growing in size. You sure have this technique down pat. Keep it up, and keep sharing how you do it. Gloria

Moved them all to direct sun all day. We had close to 14 inches of rain a few weeks back and a freeze. It tried to kill them. The healthest just went to 15 gallon pots. Kind of a gamble if it freezes I will have to dig for more christmas lights. These are the 4+ month old ones. I have been trying to keep them heathy but semi dormant. They just refuse to sleep. My little ones are just creeping along. They need a root system. My confederate rose just took off today. My OGR aggressive roses were shipped today. I might have a jungle for a while until the heat comes. This will separate the men from the boys in the Brung species.

Have to go down back. I had twin baby sheep today. I need to check on the kids.

You should post a pic of the lambs, they're so cute. My neighbor only keeps the ewes that produce twins or triplets. All the girls that produce singletons go to the slaughter house as do the yearling boys : ( It took me a while to to eat something that I saw playing in the field but I do love lambchops. lol

Well sort of the wrong title. One did not make it and the other?? Kind of wobbly. I do not know what is up. Seems both of them were having a time nursing. It is the same mother of most of my sheep. I will post a picture of the one survivor. Neither were rejcted by the mother. I have tried the bottle thing before but it does not work. They need the mother to take care of it.

I do believe the one will survive. I stole their separate area with my brugs for keeping their babies. This might have something to do with it. My wife will not cook them so I must give the ones I do not need away. I do have some males I need to thin out. I guess I need to fence off another area for raising babies. I will check my batteries and take a picture with the flash if all is ok.I will post it later . Maybe it will bring luck to it. The one that did not make it was a male so it would not have had a long life even if it survived.

He was jumping around like good babys do. So I guess he or she will make it. Still having a problem nursing. It sems like it is always trying to get milk and never enough. I guess it is getting enough or it would not be jumping around. Wish the little guy good luck. I believe it needs it.

OMG that's so cute! I forgot that you had those cool looking sheep. My neighbor has the regular smelly white ones. Even your adult sheep are cute. I hope he/she is getting enough food. Could you bottle feed it if you find it's not getting enough from nursing? I want one : ) Good luck with the baby.

I might have to. But days 1-3 have to be mom or it will die. Colusturum(sp)?? So if they make it that far they have the strength to feed even if there is a problem. Which I have never had. I have tried feeding rejected kids. It does not work you just become attached and it dies. So if it makes it to Friday he is a winner as it will be 3 days. He was jumping around last night. It should be fat as she has milk for two and only one to drink. It is skinny. I will sneak over to the Blackbelly board and see maybe they know what is up.

Well Jim, it is Friday and I hope the baby is doing good. It is so cute! I also wanted to let you know that the brug cuttings you sent me in January did very well. Most of them made it and are doing well in soil. I can't wait till good weather allows me to plant them in the ground. Jardinera

The baby is just fine and frisky. I have not looked real good but did see it jumping around. I came in late with a suburban packed with plants and mulch. Seems everybody had just what I was looking for and a good price and selection. 3 Meyer Lemons, 1 orange, 2 burgandy rubber trees, 2 giant Birds of paradise and 1 Banyan Tree and a lot of cuttings from where I pick up the Mulch before I knew everyone had my goods in stock. There were plants everywhere.

Glad to hear most of the Brugs made it. You should have a nice forest. Keep me in mind for a cutting or two of your favorite and most hardy one in the fall when you start to cut them back. I believe I am smitten by Charles Grimaldi what an agressive growers mine are. I am going to graft a couple in a month or so just for kicks. I will do the bud graft 1st and then an entire plant. They have an amazing root system.
