Another Asclepias variegata is coming up!

Last year I moved one of the Asclepias variegata plants to a new location as I didn't like the old one. This is the plant the gopher sucked down into his dark cavern. Today I found a small variegata coming up where the plant was originally located! I must not have gotten all the roots. I am doing the happy dance! I also learned from this that the variegata is easy to move, as after the plant was relocated, it came back and rebloomed in the new site. It was coming on strong this spring before it disappeared. I found a gopher device that works on vibration today at Lowe's. Going to give it a try.

Sandy, hip hip HOORAH! I think mine may be coming back, too. There is something coming up right where I planted it, so have to wait a bit long to ID for sure. I also have a purpurescens and tuberosa coming up, which makes me VERY happy!

My speciosas have taken very well to transplanting and are growing now. The Cynanchum laeve is up, and so is the incarnata. The Calotropis and curassavica seeds are breaking ground, too. Geez, it sounds like I have a lot of milkweed now, huh? Did you get my e-mail the other day?

hello...just wondering if either of you have seeds available or would know where i can purchase some Redring seeds? seem to be very hard to find! thanks

Greylady, you can grow other species that are much better behaved and grow in clumps instead of spreading by runners. Swamp milkweed or Asclepias incarnata is a Monarch favorite and is easy to grow in the garden, prefers full sun and med-wet soil. Butterfly weed A. tuberosa is another good one for full sun, dry and well-drained soil. Tropical milkweed A. curassavica can be grown as an annual and has a longer bloom period. The Monarchs supposedly love this one too, we'll see because I winter-sowed a bunch of it and have lots of sprouts. I saw the first Monarch caterpillar on my Swamp milkweed last year.

Hi ctnchpr, Just curious if your plants set any seed pods this year and if so will any be available? I got a few of last years seed through Jeff but no germination. I was dissappointed as I had seed from others that all(3 each) germinated. I would really like to get some seed pods from your plants as they seem to grow so well. Thanks, Mark (wildflowerman_2000)

The thing is..it's not rare (at least in the woods here), but apparently difficult to cultivate in captivity. I had great germination the year Mark sent me some (3 or 4 years ago), however, not a one of them overwintered. But A. perennis, which seems to be easy to grow, did the same behavior..of course drainage in wet springs here can be bad for many plants, so that may be my problem.

Hi Folks, I've been getting lots of request already this year for seeds of Asclepias variegata. I have communicated with Dennis (ctnchpr) and he has already started a new thread called "white milkweed,2016". He will be handling the distribution of the seed himself if they do indeed make viable seed.
