Colorful bromeliads at Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden

Last weekend I visited "Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden" in Pattaya, Thailand.

The place is well-known as one of the world's best palm & cycad collection.

Actually, there are thousands of exotic plant varities in the collections

and bromeliads could not be overlooked.

These are some display at the "Bromeliad Garden" where is opened to the public.

I will show the collection zone in another thread.

Many thanks for sharing all these great images of Nong Nooch with us all. Brings back memories of our trip there last June. Simply a amazing place. The giant replica ants interested us. Heres some pics Its not all plants at Nong Nooch Love the N 'Shelldance'. Glad to see some of the guests are finally wearing shorts !! with a sweltering 30 + how could they be wearing longs in Bangkok ?? By the way one thing we picked up on is the broms are all mist sprayed from over head sprinkler system every minute keeping them and us from drying out. Keeping the leaves moist helps stop the heat stress.

Ground cover for a tropical (zone 11) greenhouse

I have never posted on this forum before and am hoping there is someone who might help give me suggestions. I have a large greenhouse (over 1700 sq ft) that is maintained as a tropical zone 11 house, meaning temp is never below 55F night or day 365 days a year. The plants grown inside range from orchids and bromeliads to heliconias, ultratropical gingers, and rare palms, and a lot of other stuff. ALmost everything is planted directly into the ground, like at a botanical garden. The plantings are about 3 years old. I have recently done major changes to get the greenhouse to look more "natural". There is a pond and a stream, some wood and stones. I need ideas for tropical looking ground covers that will be amenable to letting the large growing plants grow through them, will not climb, and will mix well with ferns and the like. I have some Peacock Fern, which is wonderful, I must get some more, but other than that I have nothing. It needs to be tough enough for me to walk on. Flowers are a plus but not necessary. Colored foliage is preferable to blooms. I tried the Bolivian wandering Jew, with the small iridescent silver and purple leaves, but it took over and started climbing the walls and getting out UNDER the walls. Bad news. Thanks for any help!

I also live in zone 10 of Florida. I have a large rose garden. Most people told me I could not grow roses in Florida, but that is not true. I found a place called Cool Roses they are located in West Palm Beach. They have a huge selection of hybrid teas, Floribundas, David Austins and Eco Friendly roses. Not only do I have lots of colors, but my back yard smells great, as well as my living room when I bring in bunch for the vase. It is a great time to go visit a If you decide to go with Roses make sure that you get your hybrid teas and floribunda roses on fortuiana root stock. This root stock is best suited for the sandy soil of Florida which is loaded with nematodes. If you purchase roses that are not on fortuiana won't last but maybe 2 to 3 years..... but they are still pretty. If you live close to west palm I would also check out Mounts Botanical Garden. They have a rose garden there that you could see..... plus other kinds of flowers that you might enjoy.

stephania, Keep posting those and you will need to add a guest room to your house and charge for tours of all these places when we all show up in your country to visit

I just wish I could plant some of those Cyrtostachys renda in my garden. They make the bromeliads look even more colourful and stunning!

let me add my congratulations to Thailand for its magnificent gardens and to you for your wonderful photographs of them.
I have seen photos and videos of the much acclaimed Chelsea Flower Show but in my eyes your photos makes that pale in comparison.

yet with great creative ideas too.

Thanks Stephania for the palms! I had no idea the Sealing Wax palm wants to grow with it's feet submerged! Had I tried that, mine might have survived!

Stephania - My other interest is palms as well so thanks for the additional pictures. Those Joeys look amazing, especially compared to my strap leaved seedling. I think I've seen a picture of the variegated C. renda somewhere else on the net too.

Avane - They like to be constantly moist so it's almost easier to grow submerged. Some people have been able to grow them here in microclimates, but for the most part they are even too tropical for Ft. Lauderdale/Miami.

...WOW... Stephania... fantastic photos...! It is inspiring to see how Bromeliads can be displayed with such impact, on mass.

The photos reminded me of your article on the Royal Flora 2006 display, and I see that NNTBG supplied & landscaped that display. The way they use layers & the vertical space is brilliant.

I am particuarly interested to know how they make up the vertical walls, and columns of Neoregelias. I see they are still kept in their pots. So I wonder how are they mounted...? I assume they must be easy to remove, and replace as required.

Do you have any photos showing how this "stacking" technique is achieved...? Or can you explain how they do it...?

Hi Devo, Sorry that I don't have specific photo, but I saw they just insert or hang
the potted-plants on to the flame which made of iron construction.
They have to replace new flowering plant every few month.

In this pic you may see those of Till. cyanea pots which hanged on the column
under huge variegated pineapples.

Just notice this thread now.....WOW. Awesome. Th Kerriodoxa is also a stunner I have a couple in the garden that are doing surprisingly well concidering their very tropical origins.

We were lucky enough to visit this amazing place recently but Stephania's pics says it all as far as the brom area is concerned. There is 600 acres in all full of amazing gardens with cycads , orchids, heliconias, Australia plants etc etc - I think they have pretty much everything, including elephants!
So highly recommended but bring tons of water & walking shoes!
