p.s. I understand this makes a nice groundcover. Wondering how far out it travels?

I have had the A. fimbriata for this being the 3rd year here in North Texas. It is unlike the A. tormentosa vine. It doesn't climb like other vines & I've never seen it root when it touches the ground. It does make a great semi-shade ground cover & comes back from the root. I think I lost my original 2 plants but scattered seed & have lots of smaller plants coming up. The PVSTs seem to prefer this plant for laying eggs on but I also have eggs on A. clementitis & virginia snakeroot.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I think I'm going to work up a section of what I call my shade garden (it gets limited direct sun with mostly filtered sun from high oaks). No tree roots to complete with, just the dappled shade. I hope I can get a small patch established and be lucky enough to get some seed this fall.

Yes thanks everyone. I went ahead and put a couple in the ground, where they are mostly shaded. Will see how it goes! They really are pretty!

Thought I'd "hop" in here. This is a plant I've been growing from seed for several years. Last year I potted up the plants in the terra cotta plastic bowls--about 15" in diameter, and they did well. I put the pots in a protected place over the winter, and they are back. They have little tubers that look a lot like the asclepias tuberosa tubers. You could probably dig the tubers and store them. I lost my first crop as I let the tubers freeze.

Putting them in a bag of peat and storing them over the winter would probably work well if you don't have a garage or greenhouse, and you are in zone 8 or colder.

Your experience is a good reason to try some in a pot or hanging basket. I'm in zone 7b and this is my first time growing this plant so don't know how well they might over winter here. Thank you for all the good information you've shared with us.

Sheesh, here I am worried about whether they'll make it thru the summer, or at least May! HOT!

I've had A. fimbriata for several years but being in zone 7 I keep it in a container. I've never had vines touching the soil root but dropped seeds come up. Mine go dormant in their pots over the winter. They are kept above freezing and watered very infrequently while dormant. During the growing season they're only protected from late afternoon sun and do fine.
