Species Vriesea - pics inside

Hi all, as I've been adding to our Aussie Broms website, I've had to go through all my pics in the computer and found these pics of two of my Vriesea that you may like.

The first one is a Vriesea platynema var. platynema

its a relative of the one pictured on fcbs. by Michael Romanowski as I got it directly from him.

the second one is a whopper in size and flower height,

its Vriesea reitzii and is listed as endangered in its home (Brazilian rainforest)

I'm so mad at myself for not getting better close ups and clearer pics of this when it was in flower.

This is the last pic of the flower (unfortunately) but the tiny flower that peeked out of the bracts was a lemon/lime colour and very small.

Thanks for the photos cractpot...I do not think I have seen V. platnema var. platynema before...And those V reitzii are just fantastic plants. They had been under the radar here for awhile, only occuring in a few colections. but this summer, a whole lot came into flower, and now they are on everyones wish list. I see a little V hieroglyphica in the background...another one of the great sp.

Here is one of my fav. Vriesea sp. The one and only....Vriesea philippo-coburgii. The name fits the plant so well, a distinguished name that just rolls off the tongue...philippo-coburgii...

I have found that philipo-coburgii looks good in any situation. Full sun to semi shade...in a group, or as a feature plant in a large pot. It handles our conditions very well...tolerating cold wet winters, hot dry conditions of mid summer, and coming thru' it all without even a mark on the leaves.

Would you believe that this group of plants all came from the original 2 that came into flower this season....and they are still producing pups....with the original pups now producing their own pups...and....hmmm...I think I am going to have a few philippo-coburgii spare....may try placing a few up into the trees.

Devo, do you happen to know the name of that form of philippo-coburgii? There are other forms of it that are not nearly so attractive. I haven't seen one like yours in years and I'd really like to find one.

Hi Jack, That 'Snows of Mauna Kea F2' in the pic actually belongs to a mate who is kindly allowing me to play around with it. It took a couple of days to catch up with him, so sorry about the delay in getting back to you. That plant in the pic is the one that I'm currently having the flowering problems with. The pic of the whole plant was taken a few months ago, but here is a pic taken a couple of days ago showing the flowers not doing their thing: This pic is taken in the evening with not much light so it is a bit grainy, but you can see the pair of flowers in the middle (about half way up the spike now) - the sepals have opened but the petals remain firmly closed and when I dissect the flowers, the anthers are closed and do not contain any pollen. So, unfortunately no pollen as yet, but the plants are now getting the twice daily misting as per HDD's suggestion and there are another twelve or so flowers to go, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there may be some pollen yet to come. I've asked my mate about the possibility of a pup swap and he'd be very happy to do that. Thanks a lot for your suggestion. The pups are still very small - still under the water in the leaf bases - so they will probably be ready in several months. I'll keep you posted. Cheers, Paul

Hi sdandy, sorry to take so long to reply - just catching up after being away. Re your question on humidity and watering, those current clumps have developed over seven years that have included the longest and most severe drought in our recorded history. Lots of other things in the garden, eg several large, well-established tree ferns, have died off over that period, but the V. p-c's have soldiered on happily with no watering except natural rainfall, which has many times been light and months apart over extended periods of heat and low humidity. I suspect that just so long as they are a little bit sheltered, they can probably survive just on dew for extended periods. Also, once they get into a bit of a clump, they probably maintain their own little microclimate, with long-term storage of water deep down in the vases. The soil they are growing in is very poor sand that pretty much repels water and what little water there is gets sucked up by the gum trees, so the V. p-c's do it pretty hard, and seem to love it. Hope this helps. Gonzer, the venison jerky sounds like a great idea. I get venison pies from the local butcher whenever I can. Not the local deer unfortunately, but still very satisfying! Thank you all for the helpful feedback! I thought I would share with you some pictures of the arrangement I have for my Droseras...Droserae...plants. This shows the Drosera I've been having the most trouble with, and the life support system I've built up around it. Clipped onto an old CD rack are two work lights, each sporting a (recently purchased) high intensity CFL that is equivalent to 100W. Combined they put out 3000 lumens, which acts to supplement the light coming through the large windows I have in my living room. The windows face NW. In the little plastic deathbox in front and to the left of the self-watering orchid pot is yet ANOTHER sundew. This one I swore I'd do right. It looked good in the store, and the polymer container was solid, so I'm using this as a temporary terrarium / tray watering unit. The lid to the deathbox is gradually being opened further and further to ease the humidity down to the ambient levels. I've had the new Drosera for about a week, and it's just as green and dew-laced as the day I bought it. Temperatures in my living room hover around 75F. The next picture shows the other Drosera, the one doing the palm tree impression. This is the dining room / atrium of my house. The window faces SE, and catches the morning sun. I relocated the Drosera so that it is closer to the window, but took some precautions by arranging my ivy so that its biggest leaves provide a filtering / shade source. We'll see how that works out. What are the symptoms of sun burn on Drosera? I want to be able to move quick if I spot this as a problem. My little Drosera palm tree has developed more pronounced hairs on its leaves, which I think is a good sign. To the right is a plastic jack-o-lantern that one of my neighbors tossed onto their garbage can. A gust of wind knocked it into the street, and I picked it up, fixed it, and added some improvements. On the windowsill to the left of the plants is the guts of what is soon to be a "sunjar." They're fun, cheap to make, and make good hand-made gifts. Anyway, comments and advice are always welcome! Hi, i was lay in bed about a week ago and heard a rustling underneath me, having a small dog that likes to roam the house at night i thought nothing of it. When i heard the rustling again and the dog was downstairs i panicked,(scared to death of creepy crawlies..lol.) I called for my husband who was watching television downstairs and we stood and listened for more rustling and there it was again. So my husband armed with the kitchen sweeping brush lifted the bed and a frantically ducked my head underneath and saw a small mouse scurry under the skirting board. So after sleeping on the sofa (lol) the next morning i went and bought some poison and poured it through the hole under the carpet (huge hole, cant believe ive never noticed it)and obviously blocked up the hole. Since then i have noticed dropping in my kitchen near the backdoor, i saw a mouse scurry from behind my fireplace in the living room and can still hear the rustling under the bed but everytime we try and inspect the mouse dissapears. I have phoned my local council (pest control) and they have arranged for someone to come out on monday afternoon. I'm such a puff and am frightened to stay in my home (My husband is worse than me) but we also have a 2 year old daughter and it is hard to stay with friendsand family but i cannot sleep knowing there their. Any idea how long it will take for all the mice to be gone with a exterminator coming in? in the mean time i have put poison down but am restricted to where i can put it due to having a child and a dog. HELP!?!?! im so frustrated by it all.

Hi Lisa, I was not aware that there were different forms of philippo-coburgii...although, now I give it some thought it does not realy surprise me, as there seems to be different forms of every B Bromeliad....!

My original 2 were picked up from the sales table of our local Brom Society. They seem to be the same as all the others I have seen around the NZ collections. I have come across the odd one that has poor leaf tip markings, but put this down to just "one off". This 'form' is obviously the standard form we have here. It is the same as that pictured in Andrew Steens book...Bromeliads for the contemporary garden, P157. (the photographed plant is just grown in a little more sun). I have seen some photos of philippo-coburgii that were growing on the Sunshime Coast in Australia, & they seemed to be the same form as we have here.....nice defined dark leaf tips, with the very black base. Anyway, I will make some enquiries with collectors here to see if they know of a variety name for our plant. As it is a species, I know seed is available from time to time, so that could be an option. I had a nice batch growing from seed, but chucked it out after about 12 months, as my plants produce so many pups I do not have space for many more...!

and yours are super healthy and gorgeous, thanks for sharing your pic.

Yep , you spotted what was my wee Heiroglyphica in the background, I know they are slow growers but I swear that one has doubled in size in as little as 7 months.

I also have V.platynema variegata and V.fenestralis which I also adore.

I think a philippo-cobergii is definately on my 'next' list.

Devo that Vrisea is my all time favourite so far.

I have just got one and I love it, mine is still twee but it is displaying the same habit and colour.
