Unfortunately, from the picture, it could have been underwatered (and decided to go dormant again) or overwatered (and the roots rotted so the plant isn't taking up any water).

Dump the bulb out of the pot, shake loose all the soil and see whether the roots are white and fleshy; this is the healthy condition for the roots. Repot in a larger pot with good draining soil (mix equal parts of sand, perlite, and potting soil, or just sand and potting soil).

If they're black and mushy, they're rotted, so cut them off, let the bulb dry first, then pot it up; if it goes dormant, let it rest for a month or two in a cool (basement, root cellar) area then bring it up to room temp, water it once, and don't water again until you see growth.

Hard to say what happened, but do what Pat suggests and investigate, etc.

Looks to me like it was set in a dark corner and just dried out for some time and went dormant.

Frank-That is one fine bulb, nice in size and looks intact. Please keep us posted as to how it does.

Looks like mine do when they are exposed to cold weather. Just the leaves are gone, the bulb looks OK.

Oh, and check that the pot has drainage holes; your photo doesn't show what the bottom of the pot looks like, but a lot of the "kits" have pots without any holes at all. That'll kill the plant eventually.

Just cut off the old foliage and repot in good new potting mix after removing the "kit" soil.

It looks like they are very healthy and white. Should I still shake the cocopeat off of them, or just repot them as they are? It seems like it may disturb or damage them to shake them, but you guys are the experts so I will do what you suggest.

The pot did not have a drainage hole so it may have been just sitting in the water for some time. Thanks again and I will keep you guys posted on what happens with it.

Beautiful roots!

I would carefully tease out most, if not all, of the coco-peat so that it isn't there around the basal plate to hold too much water close to the bulb of the roots. I would replace it with a good fre-draining mix so that your pot has a consistent medium throughout.

I like Mir-Gro or other mix with added vermiculite and/or perlite. Mostly I add some vermiculite and a lesser of the vermiculite.

Do you use more vermiculate or perlite? Inquiring minds want to know!

Depending on my mood (and there are *many*, lol) I will add more vermiculite (by volume) than perlite. I do it by sight---till it "looks right". I read different suggestions that people give for various mixes and bear those in mind, but I'm not at the point of mixing them according to a given formula, but I am aware of their proportions of organic content vs inorganic.

I am planning to try some other mixes as I go along to see how my plants respond and some of those mixes will be based on the heritage of the specific bulb. Some of the species (that I plan to add)grow naturally in rockier soil or thinner soils and I will be working with that. Say, adding granite chips or more wood chips for those that prefer higher drainage.

I'll have to be careful though, because here in the south, our highs are much higher for a longer period than the plants would normally be exposed to, and with little means of changing their surroundings when outdoors, watering will have to be carefully watched so that a disaster doesn't happen (too little, too late, too much from storms and so on.)

I love vermiculite, but we cannot get it here because it is classified as a hazardous substance(being in the Mica family, you know, the asbestos thing). Don't put too much perlite in your mixture because the water will run right through the soil and it will not retain enough moisture(yep, I made that mistake one year).
