I don't think you need to worry about it.. Most animals know what to eat and not to eat.. ALTHO...LOL.. I have cows and they have munched a few Dat's to the ground .Most of it they just spit out and whatever they swallowed didn't slow them down..

As for the kids.. It depends on their sensitivity .. Some folks here react to the toxins and some of us don't..

I doubt that you would have a problem. I have lots of pets and young children and they've never tried to eat any of my dats or brugs. There's a ton of common plants that are toxic besides members of the brug family. Lily of the valley, euphorbias and azaleas are toxic if eaten and the sap can cause a rash but you don't hear people freaking out about them. It's true that brugs & dats can cause death or an allergic reaction but I think they have gotten such a bad rap because they have been used as a mind altering drug.

If your neighbor's pets are stupid enough to eat a LOT of spent flowers or leaves, they'll proabably get a good buzz---but trust me, all parts of a brug taste REALLY nasty. My dogs and cats have never shown the slightest interest in mine.

Some humans ARE stupid enough to deliberately consume these plants. If they happen to die, well, that's survival of the fittest at work. (*grin*)

We have 3 mature brugmansia and a new pet rabbit we let out into the yard. Do rabbits instinctively know not to eat poisonous plants...some of the posts indicate so and we have never had any issue with our dogs but we do not want to take any risks.

My rabbits have been hopping around the house when my brugs were being wintered over inside and they never chewed on them. I wish I could say the same for the furniture!

Most plants that are toxic don't taste good to animals so they don't eat them.. We have loads of rabbits.. Not by choice...LOL
they prefer the green beans...

Probably the most serious problem your cat will experience when it gets near Brugmansia, is the scolding it receives from you, because
it uses your brug container as a litter box!

Normally animals show no interest in these plants. Since 1997 we are aware of 4 cases of someone's pet eating Brugmansia .

1- Kitty nibbled. No side effects.
2- Kitty nibbled, threw up a few times and wasn't it's normal active self for three days, but it did not have convulsions or go belly up.
3- Dog chewed a leaf. No side effects.
4- Elliott (a Goffin's Cockatoo) peeled and ate 20 Brugmansia seeds. Elliott never even got heartburn!

A vet trip wasn't required in any of these cases.

Since 1999 we've received reports from persons in Florida and in California who have witnessed squirrels eating the young new growth tips and the seed pods of Brugmansia ... and they return for more. A Florida collector lost all of his treasured and nearly mature B. 'Species' seed pods to these critters.
Tennessee rabbits have been witnessed eating Brugmansia leaves and stems! No one has reported a squirrel or rabbit who was sick or died as the result of eating Brugmansia.

This information does not mean you shouldn't be concerned about your pets. Just watch their behavior around your plants. Chances are extremely high that your pet will turn it's nose up and ignore Brugmansia.

NO, No No. I am not even sure these things are toxic. Everything here eats them. I get sap juice plants all over my hands and nothing. I have like 100+ plants.

Maybe the species ones had a large amount of toxins but not any I have seen. The only cases of true poisoning I have heard of was forced consumption by humans. Yes forced, I heard it tastes like awful baddddddd. Yo have to try not to throw up to even get it down.

Jim is that before of after you Armor All them? lol I handle brugs and euphorbias along with other toxic plants all the time. I prune them with my fingernails and I'm still here. The only thing I've heard happen from brug juice is dilation of the pupil of the eye when brug sap gets in it. No medical treatment is necessary and they will go back to normal within 48 hrs.

My cats have nibbled the leaves & my American Eskimo dogs (10-15 lbs) have chewed up numerous cuttings & small plants (into tiny bits). They didn't bother the big ones as far as I can see & my Newfoundland didn't bother any of them. Nobody acted any weirder than normal & they have done it quite a few times. Unless something ate a lot, I wouldn't worry.

One neighbor's dog is a chihuahua - to dumb to stop barking when the fence runs out and he's suddenly face to face with my big black dog. He just slowly trails off into a whimper. He's not biting anything in my yard.

And the next door dogs just bite the water stream coming out of the sprinkler.

I have heard that Brugs have been used as medicinal plants for centuries, and that they have psychoactive properties. Many times these "psychoactive properties" are misunderstood or feared by uninformed people and are just labeled as poisonous so they can remember to fear what they don't understand. However I do remember several years ago when some youngsters in my town ate some Datura seeds and smoked some of the leaves. The polce were called by their neighbors and as the police were asking questions to find out what the kids were doing, the kids were sitting on a low concrete wall waiting to be taken to the hospital, and the whole time they were passing an imaginary cigarette back and forth seemingly enjoying the smoke very much.I really think they thought they were still smoking . It was even on the 6 o'clock news that night. The squirrels might have figured out what those kids new, lol.

Well garbird is going right to wikepedia to find out what those Jivaroan speaking people know. I read in my book on Brugmansias that it can be used to cure vericose veins, but maybe those kids really had something good going on.

My parents grew up in El Salvador (where brugs grow wild) and he says homeless people brew Brug flowers into a tea and get high off of them. So if people willingly comsume these by the dozens, they must not be as DEADLY as some sources say they are. just my 2 cents.

Brugmansia can be used to get high but if you use too much it can kill you. That is why the plants are not sold at a lot of places. The amount of hallucinogenic can vary greatly from plant to plant from what I have read and there is no way to regulate the dosage so you could either get a buzz or die so I wouldn't risk it if I were you.

Guess I'll stick to growing canabis. (just kidding) I haven't grown that in like forever but the eyes in the sky certainly think we do. They are forever flying over the fields at the farm snapping pics! lol

There are many stupid people that believe what they read and try so heck it just tells me they don't think much of the temple they have. As for animals, they are much smarter than humans. With that said I have a few neighbors that are stupid enough to do Meth and so we keep our collecting behind locked gates. ; ) Just hoping that they would give this a try?? LOL

I asked this on another site but didn't get a reply so I'll ask here. Is it illegal to grow brugs as an ornamental garden plant anywhere in the US? The only thing I've found online is a New Orleans law stating that it's illegal to make alkaloid compounds for human consumption out of brugs but they can be grown in the garden. Someone had posted that her DD was told that it was illegal to grow brugs (don't remember where) and I said that wasn't true. I didn't know for sure but I thought it was silly to be illegal but maybe it is? Someone else posted that it was illegal to grow them in some FL counties.

Karyn, I answered on the other forum what I knew about it and only found that it was illegal to use the compounds to make drugs from it in New Orleans because of a rash of deaths in teens using it to get high. I don't know about anywhere it is illegal to grow but I guess it could be a local law in some places. My ex used to grow marijuana after we were divorced on his land out in the country and the eye in the sky was still checking the place years after his death and my kids and I moved out there after they inherited the place. They were even eyeballing my okra. I had to call and complain because they were flying so low all the time it stampeded my cattle and horses.

I believe there is a couple places in FL that outlawed the growing of them. One needs to check local ordinances. I know here a couple of the Daturas are on the local weed list.
