New Jades - Hobbit and Crosby's (pics)

Good evening!

I'd like to share a couple pics of my newest Jades, a 'Hobbit' and a 'Crosby's Compact' -

both of these excellent plants were rescued by Meyer Mike from a nursery that was going out of business.

I've thanked him profusely, and I'd like to thank him again publically. Mike's a generous gentleman ;-)

I bare-rooted and re-potted these guys in a mix of fir bark, pumice, turface, gravel, and perlite.

Both plants had taken quite a set searching for sun, so I uprighted them as best I could and have them

turned 180 degrees from the sun.

Now I don't have to wait ten years to have some show-size Jades!

Wow Josh!! Those are super NICE!! Love the size and the beautiful colors on the tips...very, very pretty! I love both of those leaves. You will do an excellent job growing them so please update us from time to time. Yes, I agree...Mike is a super generous guy for sure! Nice rescue!

I, too, must make mention of the first batch of gritty mix sent to me by Al... just to get me started! He knows how much I appreciate his generosity... The moment I opened that package and saw what it contained, I knew I was about to embark (no pun intended) upon a wonderful, exciting journey into better growing and gardening... and so it has been! I've learned so much from Al, and from everyone who has asked questions and discussed their growing here, within the Container Gardening Forum... I've also learned a lot through emails with the various people I keep in contact with! So many people inspire me... Calistoga Al, Mike, Josh, JoJo, Nancy, and all the folks who have made the leap into better growing through knowledge! I want to thank everyone who's had an impact on my learning, and therefore, my growing abilities! You guys and gals are all special! :-) It all goes to prove that you most certainly CAN teach an old dog new tricks! We're never too old or too smart to learn something new. When we close ourselves off to new or different ideas, we do ourselves a great disservice. I've been alive for 50 years, and I thought I knew plants and growing pretty well... but age doesn't necessarily or automatically bring wisdom... remaining open to learning does. And it's through all of you that I shall keep learning... through your questions and my own, through the answers we receive, and through the experiences we relate... it's really a journey without end, though most enjoyable!

Thanks for all the pictures. Are you satisfied as-is or do you have plans for pruning/directing growth? I'm not saying it needs change, it is beautifully shaped as-is. Just wondering what your plans are. It would be brash indeed to insist this go into a gritty mix since it has done so well in its current soil. Caution is definitely worth repeating however. If a person waters appropriately the plant can thrive in a water-retentive soil. The problem comes in when someone waters frequently, waters some more as the answer to all plant problems, and waters still some more to fulfill some nurturing tendency(that'd be me). The soil then tends to stay soggy, and the plant spends a lot of energy repairing and replacing waterlogged roots instead of growing. If this continues the plant is at risk to be overwhelmed with root rot and death. At that point there are not enough roots to use the water, and the soil is destined to stay soggy until the haggard plant is rescued, or it simply gives up the ghost. With an appropriate gritty mix, the waterlogged condition never occurs, thus it is safer for the novice/casual grower, though under watering can slow plant growth too. (With a quicker wet-dry cycle in a gritty mix, faster root growth can occur and subsequently faster plant growth. Another advantage.) I love jade whacks so much. I love the process of making it look rough for awhile and eventually transforming it into something much more beautiful in the end. Good coloring on the most recent growth. That increased light sure made a difference. What are your plans next for the plant? Letting it grow for awhile? Did you get any good cuttings out of the whack?

Awesome Jades Doug! I LOVE your 'red horn tree' and your hummels...just gorgeous! I'm so jealous of all the colors on your Jades right now. Mine are all boring GREEN... with this brutal heat I won't see any nice colors till December(literally). Thanks for posting!

I just missed your post, so sorry!
I couldn't believe my luck when I opened the package from Mike...nice big plants, and colorful!
Also, a little Crown of Thorns had rooted in the soil of the 'Hobbit,' so now I have one of those, too.

Mike also sent me one of his Ponderosa Lemon trees with these Jades.

Cool, Josh. You have sort of a mother/daughter arrangement in the terra cotta pot that looks especially nice.

Mike also sent me a cutting of one of his favorite jades. The cutting itself is doing nicely, and several leaves that fell off in transit are now sitting atop the soil, also rooted.

Hey, Al!

That pair is nice, isn't it?
I'll encourage a bit of foliage separation once the season's further along,
but I'll definitely keep mother and daughter together.

Are you growing a cutting of Mike's variegated Jade?
It's become one of my favorites, too.

I know they will be well cared for by you, since you certainly have a way with these plants.

They look so awesome Josh, and I thank you for taking good care of them! What a great job planting them. I love that mother daughter one especially..

These are a major score...and the price was truly ridiculous! (Ask Mike....)
It would take me years to grow plants of this size and quality.

This takes the pressure off my other Hobbits and dwarf Jades.

For those trying to contact Mike - he's been working hard, snowed under (literally),
and lately he's been sick as a dog. As soon as he gets a day off, he'll check e-mail.
Drop him a short message...it'll get through.
