It also gives you some insight into Elmore's background and his personality, HDD. He obviously was not shy about self-promotion, which is why it's absurd to think that he would have left anything unregistered that was worthy of registration.

'Great Oz' looks good but isn't really my style I guess. Is 'Pacific Fleet' still out there somewhere? I checked the database and Michael's, but came up with nothing.

'Pacific fleet' is kinda like 'The way we were' ...a caption by Elmore I think

'Pacific Fleet' is the cultivar name, Gonzer. That's the one I went gaga over too, Mike! That one's been kind of a Holy Grail plant for me and I have never found it anywhere. It is a cv. of Blue Navy Blues, and I have seen plants labeled BNB (with no cultivar name), in fact I bought one years ago hoping it would turn into the one in the picture. Nope, not even close! Very disappointing.

He does say something about it being "a combination of genetics and growing conditions", so maybe it only looked like that under his conditions, although I'm not sure I buy the part about "absorbtion of minerals in the water supply". Maaaaybe........

I also don't get why he thinks 'Great Oz' is so superior to all his other hybrids. It looks like a fairly nice marmorated plant, but I'm not seeing "superclone". I have not seen that cultivar listed anywhere either, although plants labeled Emerald City seem to be fairly common. Again, the cultivar name of what's being sold as EC has somehow been lost, so it's hard to know which cultivar it is. He did say he was going to destroy all the other cvs. though, so maybe it IS 'Great Oz', but I've never been all that impressed with the ones I've seen.

All of this just illustrates why cultivar names are so important. If you order a plant based on just the grex name or the names of the 2 parents, it's like buying a pig in a poke. You might think you're getting the pick of the litter, only to end up with the mutt!

Lisa - Great minds think alike ;o). I also found the comment about minerals in the water kind of interesting. Maybe I shouldn't be using RO, lol.

I think it is kind of funny how plants like 'Pacific Fleet' can sort of just slip away. Is 20 years that long in the whole bromeliad scheme? I guess if the one he grew was the only one that ended up with such beautiful color perhaps interest with others faded and 'Pacific Fleet' sort of fell through the cracks.

I don't know, Mike. I'd love to know what happened to that cv. too. I've been looking for it ever since that article came out, and it wasn't around then either. Somebody somewhere must have it.

Sometimes things show early promise but after a few generations they develop various cutural problems, i.e. susceptibility to diseases or pests, weird growth paterns (quilling, etc.), or you just can't ever duplicate the markings on your first plant, for whatever reason.

Here I am more than 20 years later, and I still think his multi media thing is still way too much. I still have those issues somewhere.
