OT: There's gonna be mangos-a-plenty!

This tree has been giving me fruit for about 10 years (less a couple of seasons, do to three nasty hurricanes), and I have never seen anything like this. It always starts to bloom in December, as it did this time, but it usually starts pretty light. I guess it has something to do with the mild winter we are having. Heck, I had a few plumeria blooms last month! Anyway, all the Mango trees around my neighborhood look pretty much like this. It is quite a sight! I've been meaning to get a pic, for a couple of weeks now. Following, is a bougainvillea and another look at Bri's yellow noid.

Wow, Those trees are huge. I had no idea that mango trees were that large. The bouganvillea and brug are beautiful too.
I have a few camellias blooming now, but no tropicals.

mine it's trying to bloom in the basement, I have 2 of them
1 looks like yours, then I have the rasberry Ice
it has two Blooms on it, in summer they are in their glory
on my porch
with your zone you need some double Brugs

I have a bunch of aquarium's I'm doing that with I'm gonna put a grow light on them and put tin foil around the outside shiny side in to maximize the light. I'm gonna use it for a bunch of datura and brug seedlings I plan to get going for winter fun. I think you should go for it! just remember good drainage. You could even plant stuff in there and put something pretty round the bottom to cover the dirt, like maybe glue a light weight tile or something of that sort. Now that we have two Carols, I will say I am not the one making jelly. It has probably been 20 years since I made jelly and since we probably use 4 jars a year, I'm not likely to become a big jelly maker. I was, however, intrigued with the pepper jelly being made after Dawn said how good it was spread over cream cheese. Now I might like to spread that on something, so I will probably try growing a few habanaros next year and give that a shot. I have to jump in on the pie crust issue though. Mine may not be the "most perfect" piecrust in the world but it is very good and oh, so easy. I call the flour measurement (scant) because I probably use about a tablespoon less than the measurement. This will make a regular size double crust pie or two one crust pies if using those disposable pie pans. 2 cups (scant) all purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup cooking oil 1/4 cup buttermilk Mix the dry ingredients together then mix in the wet ones. This is soft crust and you can stir it with a spoon. When you have a big ball, put half between two sheets of waxed paper and roll it out. Lift the top sheet of paper to release it from the paper, then put it back on loosely. Lift the entire crust with both sheets still attached and turn it over on the counter. Your can pick it up by the back and it doesn't fall off (on this turn). Now release the second sheet the same way except DON'T put it back on. Now this is the hardest part. Put the pie plate close to you and lift the pie crust and paper together. You need to put your hands 2/3 of the way back on the crust (and bottom paper) and let the back 1/3 fall over the back of your hands and the 2/3 in front of you hands. It will still be attached to the paper, but only lightly, so put it onto the pan, paper side up and slowly release the paper from the crust after you have it all placed in the pan. If you get a hole in it, no problem, just patch. Make the edges pretty and it is ready to bake or use depending on the pie. One bowl, one spoon and the rolling pen never touched the dough. It is also oil which I feel is safer than shortening. I know, I know, it sounds too easy. I have been doing it this way for around 15 years and have not once made a different pie crust, except for fried pies and one dutch oven class. I sent pies to Uniroyal with my DH once and five people asked for the recipe. I carefully made five typed copies and sent back with him the next day. He said they had it at the copy machine making more copies last time he saw it. LOL I never, ever, use sugar in the crust, but for a two crust pie I mix a little cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle over the top crust just before it goes into the oven because it makes it pretty. When I make fried pies I use a recipe with an egg in it because I want the crust to be tough enough so the filling doesn't come out during cooking. I assume that was the reason for making that other crust recipe in the dutch oven because they wanted to be able to let it cool and lift the entire pie out using the parchment strips underneath the crust. Don't laugh until you try it. I will be very surprised if you don't like it.

I'm reading all the posts, even when I'm not responding by typing, I am thinking about you all and praying for you when needed, like EG's daughter needs especially right now. As for worrying about the spirituality of others, well, all we can do is be an example and pray for them. I know in my home that it has made a world of difference when I get closer to the Lord... that's all we can do as it's their decision about their own walk... As for spirits, those that call on Jesus name can kick the BUTT out of anything that isn't off God... try that and see! We made a nasty spirit leave our current home... most people would have called it a ghost. It scared the crap out me for a long time, our tenants (before we moved in the home ourselves, we had rented it) gave us some really scary stories, too, but regardless they HAVE to flee, but ONLY IN JESUS NAME). (Okay, now that everyone thinks I'm crazier than before, I'll change the subject...) Hannah just finished her second week (2 days a week) of tennis. The scar on her leg is mostly healed except at the bottom, but it looks like it's going to turn into a callus... not sure if that's good or bad, but sounds good to me right now... I may still have to go to Dallas to get an adjustment on her prosthesis. I can't blame you, Granny, for wanting to be there for a little bit after the baby is born. Hey Bob...We'll be in Indian Shores/Tampa this summer...We go there every summer...My hubbys sister lives in Tampa and has a condo at Indian Shores...Life is tough!!...lol

It's really hard being by the pool drinking marqueritas...lol...But hey, I got stung by a baby sting ray last summer...That was interesting!!

I'd be fun though :)

Holy cow that's loaded with blooms! I get excited when I have two racemes of flowers and my trees are smaller then a single branch of yours! Actually my trees might be dead. I can't tell yet. I cut them back and will see if I get any new growth. Mangos are one of the healthiest fruits, not to mention one of the tastiest!

OK Bob now I really want to know how far you are away from Orlando roflmao. My daughter there introduced me to Mangos many many years ago. You know trying exotic things are not familiar with...well it does not happen often. But I love that Mango ever since. Funny is that in Germany they sell them now real reasonably!

When will they be ripe for a visit? roflmao

Spectacular Bob! I love mangos and tried once to grow a tree, but killed it just like I killed the papaya. What's the secret in growing mangos!

That is a beautiful mango.
What variety is your mango/s? DH is looking to get some 'condo' mangos that will do well in FL and stay smaller. I love bougainvillea, they bloom when a lot of things aren't. I have several diff ones but they are all in pots for now.

WOW!!!! That tree is Awesome...I Love Mangos.. I have tried to start one from seed but it never worked.. I can only imagine how cool it would be to got pick a Mango...LOL
and look at all of your other beautiful blooms... I just got in from busting the ice on the dogs water...LOL :O/

Lucy, Bob's several hours away from Orlando. Too bad the mangos won't be ripe until the summer or I'd raid his yard when I'm there in Feb. He lives very close to my Mom's place, my BIL as well.

Oh yeah... it is a blooming fool this year! It has never come close to this, and I always have more mangos than I know what to do with. The tree is huge. If you can believe it, I hat-racked it just over 4 years ago, after hurricanes Francis and Jeane, at about 10 feet. There wasn't a branch or a leaf on it. Then the necxt year it took a beating from Wilma.
Its a Hayden Mango, and the fruit is better than anything I have ever purchased at the supermarket. My favorite fruit in the world! Followed by Papaya and bananas. They just happen to be the 3 fruits I grow in the yard. I'm told that from seed, the fruit will not be any good. The tree has to be grafted. Otherwise I'd send out seedlings, as they are always starting in my gardens. I just pull them up and toss them.
Indian Shores is about 4 hours and Orlando 2.5 hours.

Bob, That is amazing. You are not going to believe this. I ate my very first mange (albiet frozen) last week and loved it. I'm planning to puchase a Julie Mango for my greenhouse this spring. I've heard it is supposed to be a good dwarf cultivar.

Thank you for sharing your photos. That is incredible. You are going to have enough fruit to last you all winter. ha ha.

TJ I've always had (have?) a couple dwarf mangos and that along with papayas are some of the few tropical fruits that will produce in the greenhouse for me. I grow other tropical fruit trees but more as a curiosity because they have little chance of ever bearing fruit here.

I thought that looked like either a Hayden or Kent. I think those two both get real big. It is sure a happy looking tree:) You will be up to your ears in fruit.
I am thinking of getting a Nam Doc Mai and perhaps a Lancetilla. Because I can keep them smaller. I don't have room for a huge one right now or I would get a larger one.
I will prob keep them in pots for awhile. Their fruit is supposed to ripen at diff. times so it would extend the harvest.
Does anyone have either one of these Mangos (Nam Doc Mai or Lancetilla)?

Lady Lotus, I just saw that it is super cold where you are! 35 below zero? Gosh! Hope you snuggle up and stay warm and safe!! I saw on the U of FL extension that the Julie mango was susceptible to disease here but not sure about where you are. I think it doesn't like the humidity. I will post a link in case anyone would like to read about Mangos.

Pine Island nursery also has an online mango viewer that tells about the different varieties too.

Karyn, thanks for the information. I've not tasted a good papaya yet. I will have to remedy that though. :) I went out to Pine Island Nursery to review there Condo Mango's and think I might get one of those instead.

SJN, thank you for the information to Pine Island Nursery. I've ordered from them before they send wonderful plants. Boy no doubt. It has been so cold this year since the beginning of Dec. we have had NO relief. I understand it is supposed to be in the 20's this weekend. BOY oh BOY am I looking forward to that.

The fruit on mine ripens around July/August. Last year I had about 400 mangos. We had a storm that lasted only 15 minutes, just as the fruit was ripening. It came out of no where, with wind gusts at hurricane strength. During that 15 minutes, over 200 mangos came down, as well as a branch, the size of a lot of trees. Everyone was over collecting fruit.
Normally I pick fruit from the ground, after they fall, and from the tree, with a 12' fruit picker. The garbage men, the guy who cuts the lawn across the street, and all my neighbors know to just help themselves, because I can't keep up with it. I hate to see the fruit rotting on the lawn! Now it looks like I will have a couple more trees, and a couple of Avocado trees. I'll tell you about that soon.
That's a great link, Lenette. I have gone there before. The U of FL extension service is a great source of information.

Let me know which avocados you get and how they do. I have terrible luck with avocados even if they are grafted lol. I had two nice grafted ones last year. A Haas and another one (I forget which). I killed one so I gave the other away quick LOL! I think it was just too hot and dry where I was last year for them to be kept in pots.

I love avacados. Before 911 I used to fill my luggage up with avacados whenever I went to CA. lol I'm afraid to put anything in my luggage now.
