Butterfly Garden

buttonbush question?

I want a buttonbush but really dont have a wet spot in my yard my question is what if i plant it in a pot and dont put holes in it or maybe just 1 hole were it will stay wet will this work or is a buttonbush just not ganna work .

I just planted mine in a big ole plastic pot for now. I am much better and keeping an eye on my potted plants that need a lot of water than if I put it in the ground.

I have a huge one that's colonized with new shoots, Angie. Mine always takes longer to leaf out than other plants, so I imagine yours is alright. You could scratch the bark gently and if it's green, you know it's alive. Give it some time - when it blooms, it REALLY attracts the butterflies! Sherry

I've never found any hops growing wild, Elisabeth. I looked at the same? database as you did, with only LA, MS and FL not having any native hops. Actually, I thought humulus lupus/hops vine was native to Asia and had become naturalized in certain northern states - this from info I got five? or more years ago. I also didn't know there were so many variations of it, different plants growing in different parts of the country. So, since QMs shun my elm and sugarberry trees, I assume the natural host for them is false nettles, making false nettles a great plant for me, hosting red admirals as well as QMs. Unless some hop eaters came from Alabama with a banjo on their knee that is! :) All but two of the cats have made their chrysalis, and they're in the "J" right now - fun! American beauty bush is an understory shrub here, that grows in deep shade - the soils it grows on are all very well drained, so it's an unusual plant in that it likes the dry shade. The berries ripen in fall and are a beautiful purple color. I've seen cardinals eat them, but I don't think they're a bird favorite. I've only found one cat on them, and that was a good many years ago - it was a hornworm cat, and I didn't know what type. The main thing I noticed about it was all the white cocoons on it - poor thing! Lately, I've been putting branches of it in with my moth cats for them to use for cocoon spinning - the leaves are soft and easy for the cats to manipulate. One other thing, it's in the verbena family, and the leaves have a slight lemony smell - maybe it's the North American version of lemon verbena? :) MissSherry

I'm in Zone 7 and have a button bush I kept in a pot for a couple of years until we were permanently settled, then planted it in what will be a flower bed right in front of the house, in an inside corner where water sometimes collects if we get a lot of rain (although we do have a drain a few feet away). It's grown well and filled out but after almost 2 years in the ground it's never bloomed, so I've wondered if it gets enough sun as the house faces roughly west by northwest and the garden doesn't get direct light until early to mid-afternoon (other species I've planted are shade-tolerant). From what I've seen species that do get full sun (like my sweetbay magnolia) take a beating here as we can have weeks of temperatures in the 90s with little to no rain. It's actually become a bit scraggly so I may prune it this fall and see if it puts more energy into flower production next year. It sits in front of our home office with picture windows, so I had envisioned this area to be a gathering place for pollinators and birds (I have a bird bath and bird feeder there as well, which the birds don't visit). I have a Rose Mallow in the opposite corner that I planted last fall (another story in itself), and it gets almost no direct sun but it bloomed a few days ago.

Mine came in a plastic pot from the mail order nursery. It dried out a couple of times, but continues to grow, hasn't lost any foliage at all. They may take drier conditions than we know.

I have a Buttonbush that has done pretty well in ordinary soil. It's competing with an enormous oak and a thick grove of Sweetshrub, too. I bought another Buttonbush to put at the edge of our pond. I'm curious to see the differences between the two as they grow, since they'll be in such different conditions.

It's really dry here and there is a huge one that is growing over our fence from the neighbors yard, it's amazing, the birds love it, and by the looks of their lawn...nothing has been watered in a few months!

I planted mine in the leach field of my septic tank, and it grew like a weed last year, its first year. It's making new growth this year, and it's already sent up a new trunk - it's a multi-trunked, large shrub. I'm not surprised it'll grow in dryer soil, though, because it's such an easy to grow, vigorous plant. I plan on taking a few more cuttings from it this summer, rooting them (it's extremely easy to root) and planting more in the leach field - I know it likes wet spots!

Hey, guys. I grow them in containers and know the only time they lose their foliage is when the root ball dries out completely. A beautiful shrub!
