Multiple Problems with my houseplant Brom

I have a hard time keeping things alive once they enter the house :)

I bought a Brom awhile back, put it in a pot, and put it in the house. It gets mod/low light and water abt once a week in the cup, about 2x a month in the soil.

Slowly its been deteriorating. The leaves have started yellowing and are spotty. Some edges have white on them. Whenever I fill the cup with water, little gnats fly all over. I don't water the dirt/root area very often, am I supposed to?

Also the leaves are not soft, they're kind of brittle.

My instincts are saying it's not getting enough light (the yellowing), but I'm stumped on the moisture (gnats=too much moisture BUT brittle=not enough).

Yes? No? Other thoughts?

Thanks for any help.
