Christie, Benary's Giants do, indeed, have "some of those yellow things". They are called pollen florets. The stigmas are the thin yellow "forks" at the base of each petal that receive the pollen to fertilize the seed that the petal is attached to. "It's kind of hard to find tall single colors that aren't double. I want butterflies!" Well, the Zowie that you mentioned in the other thread isn't exactly single, but it puts out a lot of pollen, so it might be to your taste. However, all zinnias put out some pollen florets, which contain the nectar that attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. So, if you have a lot of zinnias, you will have a lot of all three. If you actually want zinnias that aren't double, there are some strains of Whirligigs that have "run out" in open field culture, and have a lot of single bi-colored and tri-colored flowers. They look sort of like daisies, and can be quite pretty. One strain of Whirligigs that you might like is available as the Whirligigs from Parks. Based on your preferences, I think that you would totally enjoy growing a lot of them. As I have mentioned elsewhere, I much prefer double zinnias, and I have culled a lot of single zinnias that appeared in my zinnia patch. Some of them looked so pretty that it actually hurt me to do it. But I am trying to stick to my breeding objectives. Incidentally, not all zinnia florets are the fuzzy yellow "starfish" pollen florets that you usually associate with zinnias. The florets of scabiosa flowered zinnias have petal colors, and yet they also contain nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds. They can "smell" it and go for it. This is an example of a zinnia that contains the "scabious" florets. I have enjoyed crossing scabiosa flowered zinnias with "regular" zinnias to get some interesting results. The "scabi" florets have one important advantage over the normal fuzzy yellow florets, in that the fuzzy yellow florets die and shrivel after a couple of days, while the scabious florets remain as a permanent part of the flower, enabling the flower to build an impressive center of them. My hope is to breed scabious zinnias with much larger florets. I have made some progress in that direction. I don't know if I have a favorite color of zinnia, but I am going to be growing a lot more white zinnias next year. They look good in the evening, and they make nice crosses with other colors. Actually I just went to look, and they have quite a few, but not all the ones I've seen. It jogged my memory though. I think the blue one is 'Suenos' (with a ~ over the n) often misspelled "suenios", or maybe that was Hummel's original name-- he misspelled a lot of spanish words in his names (Neo. 'Hojo Rojo' is a prime example). Anyway, I think cylindrata is the other half, rather than gamosepala. A friend of mine did a gamo hybrid and it is pretty different, although you never know how the genes are going to shuffle. I would agree that Ae. calyculata looks more like it should be the parent of the yellow one, but mine was labeled as a comata cross, which I believe is 'Covata'. The FCBS pic doesn't look quite the same though, so that is confusing. One thing you should know, though. The pictures in the FCBS files can be submitted by anyone, and I don't know if they have any kind of authority verifying that the name the sender puts on it is correct. I kind of doubt it, because nobody knows everything, not even Harry or Uncle Derek! This is particularly true of hybrids, because there is no way to prove it's not what you say it is, even if common sense tells you otherwise. It's still a great resource, but just keep that in mind when you look.

in the original post in the shrub forum.. wherein i referred them to you gurus .. i said: it reminds me more of an arb.. that i have as Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Globe' aka 'Globosa Aurea' and one 'tell'.. is whether yours was ever sheared.. or if it is natural shape ... the one above.. grows in this shape.. all by its lonesome ... and you should be able to tell by sticking your head in it.. lol ... coloration varies thru the year ... so i dont know if yours is the yellow version ... but you might want to change the search at the link to ... Well, I can't say the best singer has always won. Can never forget Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken. You're right, people say they like her, she did well, and such as that. But no one has said she is their favorite to win. It's hard to imagine luke warm responses if Celine were a contestant. I like the guys better too, but I can't say it is because they are better singers than Carly. They are more appealing is more like the reason. I'm trying to say she doesn't impact me much. She doesn't excite me when I hear her. Brooke, for example, is very middle of the road - no antics, no soaring, nothing to write home about - but I get the warm fuzzies when she sings. I smile when she's on stage and in her element. She has an affect. David Cook makes me have a ball right along with him. He takes me on his ride. David A. makes me want to hug him and mess up his hair LOL. I could say similar of all the other contestants, whereas Carly has no affect at all. It is undeniable that she's good, but she doesn't impact the listener like the others do.
