Stokes Aster seeds... do they need cold

to germinate. I really want to put out a container now and wondered if I am wasting my time and should wait until it is colder. Thanks

Druse (his suggestions are usually for fresh seed) doesn't think they need cold. "Sow @70F for germination in 20-30 days". Are your seeds fresh from this season?

Clothiers (with recommendation often for seed that has been dried and stored) has more of a 'flip a coin' approach....they may or may not need cold. "Stokesia laevis , Sow at 68ÂºF, if no germination in 3-4 wks, move to 24-39ÂºF indefinitely"

thanks, morz - Hey, I'll try them both ways - yes, they are fresh seeds, but unfortunately, not that many.

Natanya, there are many columbine/aquilegia, do you know which you have? They have different germination requirements, some will germinate after a chill of a couple of weeks, some with no chill and can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks to several months to germinate at room temp, others need many months at approx 40F. And the chill (if needed) has to be moist to do any good. Dry in the refrigerator is just storage - a chill to stratify must be done moist.

I like the wild asters in a wild place. I have plants that I like for the wilder parts of my yard. Four o clocks are one. They take care of themselves and can compete with weeds. I have moved the jerusalem artichokes out of the yard but I still get to see the yellow flowers where I have it on the edges of the tame area.

Mine usually bloom in May or June. I have several planted. They like full sun and good drainage. They like a lot of water but need to drain okay. Most of mine have done very well and have spread. The few that I have lost have been in a location that stayed too wet. Plant them where lantana or verbena or gaura would do well. They do need to be watered when they wilt, especially when blooming.

Yes, 30-60 days moist storage. I save the seeds in a bowl from the apples I eat fall and winter, then wrap in a damp paper towel and put in ziplock bag in the fridge in late Jan./ Feb. I plant them in april when I'm planting peas. Very high success rate. If you start now, you can still grow this season, they will just be a bit smaller going into winter, not having a full growing season behind them.
