It does seem so. It's been reported on here that the most popular are Buddleia 'White Profusion', 'Pink Delight', and 'Royal Red'. These are all cultivars of the species davidii. I've also heard that B. weyeriana (the yellow flowering one) is also a good one.

I tried the nanho series, B. davidii nanho, and they don't seem to be attracted to it at all, and others have reported the same. Avoid those - they are dwarfs.

I've had lots of butterfly bushes/buddleia davidii in different colors, and they've like them all except the very small, dwarfish bushes - I have no idea why they shun small ones, unless it's because they like to have more flowers to choose from.
Right now, I've got Black Knight, White Profusion, and Summer Beauty, and the butterflies like them all. They also like the dark magenta ones, like Royal Red, that I've had in the past, also the pale pink/lilac ones. The only choosiness I've noticed in regards to color is that red-spotted purples and American ladies seem to prefer my White Profusion.

I have a 10 yo white (w/some lilac -- that was part of a Michigan Bulb Tricolor), Royal Red, Pink Delight, Black Night, and a few lilacs. I had Sungold a few years ago, which I had a horrible mite problem with, so I discarded it. The yellow Eastern Swallowtails really liked this one. My butterflies (monarchs/swallowtails) prefer the white one and the Pink Delight over the others. Unfortunately the white one is also a carpenter bee magnet, and boy do they get testy when you walk by it! Too bad I have it planted right by my sidewalk. But, having said that, I wouldn't get rid of it for anything...

Actually, my Lantana has been much better at attracting butterflies than the 4 butterfly bushes I have planted on the other side of the sidewalk. I also have 4 BB's on the side of the house, and I don't really see that much action on those either. Just a giant Swallowtail once in a while. The Lantana and the Blue Mist Flower attract the most butterflies for me.

Same goes for me. The butterflies go for the lantana and duranta out here. Have two lilac colored BBs but I've only seen a Black Swallowtail on that. Mist Flower works wonders too...very popular at the local butterfly parks.

Will still say duranta (purple blooms) is the best thing in my yard :o)

Finchelover - Which ones do your butterflies like the best?

I had Nanho Blue and three others that I got rid of. One was a named variety that was reddish purple. The other two grew from seed of either that one or Nanho Blue. I rarely saw a butterfly on them. I only have Pink Delight now and it's a living butterfly collection when it's in bloom. It's funny how there can be so much difference.

Last year was the first time I've planted lantana. I bought two different kinds that looked the same )yellow and orange flowers) but had different names. I planted them both in full sun a few feet apart. The butterflies flocked to one and ignored the other. Wish I had kept the tags so I'd know what to buy next time.

Christie, I bet that the lantana that you had that they ignored was the same kind as mine that didn't get any takers either. It's the gold color...it was called New Gold Lantana. That one was a flop. I assume that the ones people have luck with is the bi-color one, but after such bad luck with that one, I'm not even buying lantana again. Another reason is that I'll already have so many more nectar plants for them to choose from. If you want to get lantana again, I'd suggest getting the bi-colored (I don't know the specific name of it)...maybe "NOT THE GOLD one". lol

My butterfly bushes really attract the butterflies and I'd never want to be without them. They are without a doubt the biggest butterfly magnets that I have here at my place.

Wish I remembered for sure but I think my lantanas were both bi-colored. I usually keep track of the names of my plants but those were annuals so I didn't.

Christie, Well, my oldest (only a few years old) butterfly bush didn't have a nametag on it when I bought it, but I loved the purple color and bought it anyway. My other younger ones are Black Knight, Pink Delight, and Royal Red (I have to replace the Royal Red one because it died out). The one I get the most butterflies on is the purple one that I don't have a name for. I don't know if the butterflies liked that one better because it was bigger or because of the color. I'll make a separate post and ask if anyone knows what the name of it is.

I couldn't tell you then about your lantana if they were both bi-colored. If I were to pick between the gold and bi-colored to plant in the garden, I'd personally pick the bi-colored. I'm trying to get mostly perennials going here at my place, though, and since Lantana is only an annual up here, I've decided I'd rather have other plants instead. I have lots of room here to plant loads of plants, but the thing is to keep is all weeded??
