I spend a lot of time looking at my plants and flowers, too... and that's without smoking anything! Hehe!

Cindee - your San Remo is very light and delicate looking! I really like it, even though I remember the catalog photo being a lot darker pink... yours is very nice! I wonder if that's due to your climate, or if it's just that bulb?

    Since yesterday the oldest bloom has gotten a little more pink power. Today I pollinated every flower. The blooms seem to be lasting a nice long time too. I just love this one!{{gwi:434610}}

    Is this San Remo??

Mike, I'm pretty convinced that we both have 'Summertime' yours has even a more saturated color..very pretty. I have looked at every picture I can find of 'Summertime' and still can't find one that shows the 2 faint dots in the eye as in ours, but on White Flower Farm's website, they have several doctored up pictures and I noticed that the flowers are held up high..clumped together for a bouquet effect..and that's what mine are doing..and I'm sure yours are also..I would say that we can safely change the labels to Summertime....(it's certainly NOT San Remo) Donna

    San Remo

It's near the top of the burgeoning "must have" portion of my constantly growing "wish list"! My dream would be to have enough space and enough light to have one of every hippeastrum variety, and more than one of the varieties I really like! Of course, it's only a dream... as it is, I am finding that I need to be a bit more picky in the varieties I choose as I'm running out of space to keep all of my bulbs happy! If they were all miniatures, I'd have plenty of room... but many of the hybrids are so big, and the leaves grow so tall and long, that I am having trouble finding appropriate places to keep them all! San Remo will be one I collect, though... Cindee has had such a wonderful time with hers, and it's so beautiful, that I just must have it! Plus, it appears to be extremely fertile, and that's a consideration. I almost wish some of these were ugly... it would make keeping the collection to a manageable size a lot easier! I'm at over 45 bulbs, and counting! We still have the summer Aussie order coming up, and that will net about 6 more bulbs... and I have 1 bulb on order right now... and I just got 5 bulbs recently... it's becoming more of an obsession than an addiction, or is it an obsessive addiction? I don't know... I just know I'm in deep, and I must gain some control at some point so I don't end up with so many plants that I can't care for them all properly!

San Remo x Apple Blossom 2011

    Q

HereâÂÂs a surprise - all the flowers so far have been following the script and giving apple-blossom-like blooms, but this one has delved into its gene pool and come up with a solid red appearance, while preserving the apple-blossom like shape. Normal service is resumed with the next one, and the buds on 4 more waiting to open all seem to be pale.

Very lovely!! I remember seeing this one when you posted it last year. After seeing yours last year, I tried the cross of Bogota x Sweet Lilian hoping that my flowers might resemble yours in some way, with the light pink, as I didn't have a San Remo to work with. Several more years to wait... Donna

In this flower you can see the dots much better. They are typical for 'San Remo'. But from what a parentship they are inherited? We can see them sometimes, but not very often in that kind in amaryllis. Actually I have noticed them in the australian 'Jennifer Jean'.

I see a lot of varieties by Maguires that have freckles. To tell you the truth, they have a lot of similar varieties that they say are different hybrids... They truly have a few interesting varieties though.

    You want freckles ?
    Here are freckles !
Two siblings of a cross of Germa x unnamed white
( where does the red come from ?? I think in a white flower somehow the expression of red is suppressed, but the genes are there...
The flower is not white, but not really well in these pictures : somewhat like the colour of a cut green apple ( with a red skin.. )especially when the flower is young; later fading

    Oh, wonderfoul! Thank you, Jaap.
It must be very interesting to know more of the genetics of
    Hippeastrum.
The unknown white was a large flowering Hybrid? I suppose, it was not an 'amputo'-like, right?
    Thanks very much again, Jaap

Well, tonight my blooms are finally starting to waver a bit. I gave them each some more fairy dust, so hopefully by the time I am done with surgery, I will have some green seed globes.

I didn't realize that my recovery would be so long. Today at the surgeons I had 2 options. To be moved to a nursing facility for a week or get in-home care. In home care nurses are like $20 bucks an hour!! This is a very busy time for Dennis at work, and he went with me so I asked him if he could take a week off. He said "Ya, I can, but it's a crazy time at work". The surgeons asst. said just if he is there at night, and maybe 1/2 the day would work. Nurses and phys therapy people would come in a couple times a week to draw blood, check vitals, help me bathe and get me exercising. She said I am too young to go the nursing home rehab route and that it would be horribly depressing for me. So we are going to go with the in-home rehab. I am totally in real-life shock right now. I think I am finally realizing how intense this surgery is, especilly after signing a consent form for them to dispose of the hip bones and tissue after surgery! I don't want to get scared, but I have to tell you, this has been areal wake up call!! Who will water and tend to my plants????

  • soultan

You of course. You will recover in no time, and we will be there with you all along. Hopefully you have a laptop, so you can write to us and take look at all the photos we will put up here and send to you.

OOh I love san remo! It's so pretty. The freckles remind me of little kids in the summer time.
Has anybody looked at Maguires list recently? They have a few new ones. I have to make a list to take with me when I visit the farm. It's so hard to choose from their list, there are so many to look at. Their photos are not to the stanards of this forum so it's hard to see all the details of each bloom.
Any suggestions wouls be very appreciated. I'll be buying mainly doubles and a few singles too.

    Thys,
Was it you who had the white double from Maguires? If so you have to post the photos here for everyone to see how beautiful it is. I was so impressed by your photo compared to theirs.

    Dizzy,

I just got a reply from them yesterday. They are putting up a new site and doing new pictures. There are a few varieties I'd definitely get from them if I were australian. Right now the bulbs are in bloom, as they say, so I will have to wait till the Summer here to order from them since they are dug up and shipped per order.

Soultan, thanks for the encouragement! I don't have a laptop, but can maneuver my desk over so I can have the computer at my bedside.

I just heard from one of my good Florida gardening friends, and she will come for a couple of days to stay with me so Dennis can go back to work and not have to worry about me during the day!

  • jodik_gw

Cindee - If I didn't have the kennel full of dogs depending on me every day, I'd jump on a plane and come stay with you to help... I really wish I could, dear Cindee...

When my Mom was ill, the doctors wanted us to hire nurses for her... I couldn't believe they cost so much, and insurance wouldn't cover the cost! Healthcare is way too expensive!

If there is anything I can do from this far away, besides keeping you company via email and the forum, please let me know! I would be happy to do whatever I can to make your recovery more pleasant!

I'll start by taking lots of pictures and posting them, both here and in emails, so you have something pretty to look at! Your recovery time will fly by, and in no time you'll be getting around splendidly! :-)

    Cindee,

I have been reading these posts, but not had much time to respond.

I recently had surgery, and it is not fun to suddenly be dependent on others when you are used to being indepedent.

Your surgery is much more serious than mine, and reading between the lines, you will benefit greatly.

I would be there to help you, if I did not have to work, but I do...

    God Bless!

  • jodik_gw

I know I'm far away, but whatever I can do, just ask! I'm more than pleased to try to help... if there's anything I can send you, I'd be happy to... you're my friend, Cindee, and even if all I can do is cheer you up, then that's what I'll do... right now, I'm praying that your surgery is completely successful, and that the benefits are felt soon afterwards...

Take advantage of your time in the hospital to catch up on sleep, or tv shows you've wanted to see, or read a book or magazine that you've been meaning to read, or make a list of all the really cool plants and seeds you want for your gardens... have all your gardening friends send you catalogs, magazines and anything having to do with gardening so you can, at the very least, enjoy the pictures!

And I'm sure that Dennis will be watching your plants for signs that they need watering... he seems like that kind of guy, very much like Larry... a bit hard on the outside, but super soft on the inside, and very sensitive to what you like and dislike... and very willing to do anything to make you happy...

You'll be so busy with physical therapy and with all the good wishes coming through in emails and forums, and all the cards you'll get in the mail, that the time will pass quickly, and before you know it, you'll be walking out to the patio to check on your plants!

Here I am, getting all weepy... and it's not even time for you to go!! I just want everything to work out perfect for you... you deserve it! :-)

  • soultan

    You see, Cindee,
You can go into this surgery with so much positive attitude that you just cannot resist to get up and dance as soon as possible. That is very important to be positive about it. I always say: Never cry about the past, live in the present for the future. Whateve is coming is more important from whatever you are leaving behind... And now if someone will give you a hard time, you can tell them: You wan' a piece of me?!
I had a small surgery a few years ago when my tonsils were taken out just before Thanksgiving. Guess who was having turkey dinner with guests on Thanksgiving day? Have you ever had pureed turkey? :o)

eeewww Soultan, pureed turkey sounds so gross. Trust me guys, I have a very positive outlook on everything. I came up the hard way and have gone through many challenges in my life. "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger". I rely on my instincts, my belief in God and my stubborn Italian nature to get me through most anything.

All of your best wishes, support and encouragement means so very much to me. You really are like family, you know. I love you all!

And we love you, Cindee! You're like a bright ray of sunshine here in the forum! You have such a bubbly personality, and a wonderful outlook on life! And you're right... faith can carry you far... I rely on my faith to get me through most everything difficult, and it always does... :-)

As a footnote... I don't think I could stomach pureed turkey... ew!

Boldog Hálaadást... Just so I throw in the Hungarian translation too. :o) I bet you could not pronounce it. :o)

Even though I have no idea how to pronounce a single word in Hungarian, anything spelled that close to "Bulldog" has to be a very interesting word!! LOL!

  • cindeea

Sounds like Bulldog Had A Gas.....pffffffttt

  • soultan

Hehehe. Boldog is Happy. :o)And it is not Bul. It is BOL. Like BOLero, then dog is pronounced with the same O. BOldOg. :o) So let's start the Hungarian lesson... No wonder nobody is willing to learn this language unless born into it. Quite difficult. Too many words. :o)

  • jodik_gw

The Spanish translation for Bulldog is usually "Perro Diablo!" according to the reactions we've gotten over the years! If they only knew how wonderfully gentle bulldogs are with family... :-)

    Continue, Soultan... second word is?

  • soultan

Hálaadás (Thanksgiving). Like Hi, without the last y sound. La - A like the a in Falling. Ad - A like the a in falling. à - Like the a in Mirage. S like the S in Shhhh.
:o) Now you can pronounce it.

  • jodik_gw

Cool! Our first Hungarian lesson! :-)

  • soultan

This was the second one already. Hungarian is really hard to learn. It is absolutely not a sexist language for instance. There is no He or She, just one general third person form and the It. That's all. So that is why I am often mixing it and say He for everyone... My brain still does not care if you are a woman or a man. :o)

  • jodik_gw

Well... since I'm still devoid of facial hair, I'm pretty sure I'm a woman! :-)

That's a very different concept for a language... although, not a bad idea! I don't know when or where I'd ever use Hungarian, but it would be interesting to learn a bit of it!

  • soultan

When you go to Hungary after you retired, and live off of your retirement money. There, you can spend like a little king. The average pention is below $500 there, so anyone having more money can live an easier life there. People come to live to Hungary from all over Europe and America. It is easier to manage from the kind of pentions they can get from other countries. $2000 is an executive salary there.

  • jodik_gw

Wow... there are several countries like that... I think that's one of the reasons people flock here on work permits... so they can make a better salary! I'm pretty sure that America has some of the highest salaries, and costs, in the world...

When I was 16, I made well over a hundred dollars a week, and that was part time work... I also went to school... and that was a long time ago, too!

So sad, my San Remo's beautiful blooms are all spent. I removed all the remaining pollen for future work. I did pollinate all 4 blooms with itself. Looks like three of the 4 will develop. One, the last to bloom, looks wilty and may abort. Still I should get 3 healthy pods.

  • jodik_gw

It seems like they lasted for a while, though... and three healthy pods are better than none... it was beautiful while it lasted! :-)

Soultan, I am hoping to have more scapes. It is starting to send up some new green and I hope there is another flower scape in there. I have saved it's pollen and hope to use it soon on Pink Diamond. This will make an interesting marriage, or sex-act, I think!

  • jodik_gw

Well, it IS the year 2007, almost 2008... we've come a long way, Baby! We're a lot more progressive now, and partnerships don't always have to include marriage! As long as the two bulbs are committed to each other, I think it should work just fine! LOL!

  • soultan

I wouldn't committ the two bulbs to each other. This is nature. It is a human invention to pair up and stay committed. Plants are more free excercising their procreating abilities. Thank God!

  • jodik_gw

LOL! Just a little joke... of course plants don't commit! Only humans and some birds... that's all that I know of... and as sad as it is, the birds have a better sense of fidelity than some humans!

Speaking of... I must remember to breed a few Hippis today, before the flowers fade!
