butterfly ginger seeds, Hedychium coronarium

Hello everybody,

I am trying to find out the proper way to save the seeds. Mine readily self sow but not sure how to save them for trading and saving. Anyone with experience?

I don't have a problem finding the seeds. They make a truckload. I just don't know if you can store them. They have that fine red coating and self sow fine so, fresh they would work. Not sure if they are still good if dry or if you need to clean off the red coating. It's thin, unlike with magnolias that have a thicker red covering. I guess I'll just have to experiment this year and see.

tamkatie, I've grown Hedychium indoors and out. They get pretty big if you want it has a houseplant, and they tend to grow better outside than in, unless you have a bright spot, greenhouse or conservatory for the winter months. If you have a smaller rhizome, you can grow it as a houseplant fairly successfully, but probably will never flower as such as they need space to grow to flowering size and they seem to like the outdoors better. From my garden, I've been digging them up in the fall and cramming them into pots, after which they go into the 3 season room and then the basement when winter hits. I just keep them on life support through the winter months and then get planted back in the garden in spring/summer. They really take off once they are planted in real soil again and will usually set blossom again by fall/late fall.

You can hand-pollinate the flowers if you want seeds, but otherwise this species is not a big seed-setter. Hedychium pods are usually greenish yellow on the outside but they split open when ripe, revealing bright orange insides with red seeds. As Gwenn says, you'd definitely notice it if you had any! Hi Pattie, Since this is old post, don't know if you're still interested. But I had a problem with too many of these and most of my responses were about the rhizomes they produce and propogate with. I just checked and they CAN be propogated by seed (I don't know how, tho) but with the multitude of rhizomes that mine put off (my plants grew like bamboo and overran my entire garden), seems that is how everyone swaps them. That's how I saw them sold on the web. (Two rhizomes with one leaf each , one sprout each for $25 !!!) I had someone explain to me on the swap page how to go about preparing the rhizomes for shipping and it's simple, but won't go into that. If you find someone intersested, they can tell you. I removed the spent flowers and more flower buds are coming out from where I have removed the old flowers! Yeepee! That should extend the flowering time a bit. I bought my plant with a single stem 3 months ago and now it has 12 stems! Hope the flowering season is reasonably long.

I didn't know Butterfly Ginger made seeds.
Of course, I usually cut my flowers to bring inside.
I'll have to watch for seeds.

Mine make loads of seed. You can tell by squeezing the cone part that blooms and if it is making seeds you'll feel them swelling. They aren't noticeable until they burst open revealing the orange insides and bright red seeds.
